OBJECTIVE: This study examines parental behaviors related to aerosol medication and nebulizer use, considering the patients' clinical and demographic variables' impact on treatment outcomes. Parental challenges in managing aerosol therapy may reduce drug delivery efficiency to the lungs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 124 children aged 0-36 months with early-onset recurrent wheezing who were receiving daily regular aerosol treatment were evaluated. Data regarding parental knowledge and attitudes regarding nebulizer use and sociodemographic variables such as age, smoking, educational levels

BACKGROUND: Phototherapy for hyperbilirubinaemia in neonates is one of the most frequent causes of hospitalisation in the first week of life, accounting for up to 35 % of hospital (re)admissions. Studies suggest that phototherapy can be applied safely and effectively at home. However, in-hospital phototherapy is still the standard care in most settings.
AIM: We aimed to explore determinants of implementing home phototherapy from the perspectives of healthcare professionals and parents to inform its wider implementation.
METHODS: We conducted focus group interviews with healthcare professiona

AIM: Examine the meaning of 'successful feeding' for parents of infants at risk for feeding difficulties and how this meaning evolved from 1 to 24 months post-term age.
DESIGN: Secondary analysis of responses to an open-ended question from a U.S. longitudinal mixed methods study.
METHODS: At 1-, 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24-months post-term, parents completed surveys which included the question: What is 'successful feeding' to you? Using conventional content analysis, 864 responses from parents of 254 infants were coded into the following categories: Child Behaviour, Positive Response, Intake, and T

Several studies have been published studying association between parental low birth weight (BW) and neonatal outcomes of their children. To date no systematic review and meta-analysis (SRM) has been published to quantify the impact of maternal and paternal BW on outcomes in the next generation. The aim of this SRM was to analyse the association between parental BW and anthropometric and metabolic outcomes in their children.Electronic databases were searched for studies documenting BW of parents and children with neonatal outcomes. Primary outcome was to evaluate impact of parental BW on occurr

BACKGROUND: Toe walking is prevalent among children, affecting 5% to 24% of the pediatric population. Clinicians rely on parental reports of frequency of toe walking to guide clinical decision making and outcomes assessment. However, recall accuracy and differing environments challenge the reliability of parental reports. This study aims to validate parental reports against quantitative in-shoe device measurements (NURVV/RUN).
METHODS: Twenty children with persistent idiopathic toe walking (ITWp) (mean age: 9.6y; 13 males, 7 females) from 8 pediatric orthopaedic specialty care sites participa

BACKGROUND: Parents commonly use the internet to research their child's diagnosis, read provider reviews, and find additional resources like support groups before or after a clinic visit. This study aimed to characterize demographic and diagnosis-specific variables associated with more frequent internet-based research prior to initial outpatient evaluation.
METHODS: Parents of children presenting to an outpatient orthopaedic clinic completed a survey reporting their history of internet use in preparation for the initial visit. Data on demographics, diagnosis, and types of websites used were c

Prolongation of the heart-rate-corrected QT interval is a widely accepted surrogate for delayed ventricular repolarization and torsade de pointes risk. Although initial drug-safety efforts targeted parent compounds, accumulating evidence shows that circulating and tissue-accumulated metabolites are often the primary drivers of heart-rate-corrected QT interval change. This review synthesizes mechanistic, translational, and clinical findings to explain how metabolites prolong QT through several routes: direct human ether-à-go-go-related gene and other ion-channel inhibition, modulation of sodium

INTRODUCTION: In treating early-onset scoliosis (EOS), pediatric orthopaedic surgeons and families must often choose between growth-friendly interventions such as magnetically controlled growing rods (MCGR) and early definitive posterior spinal fusion (PSF). While each strategy has associated pros and cons, little is understood about the specific preferences of patients' families. Addressing potential nuances in these preferences is crucial for meaningful shared decision-making (SDM). To better understand the factors influencing family decisions, we conducted a choice-based conjoint (CBC) anal

BACKGROUND: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common rheumatic disease in childhood. Despite the availability of effective treatment strategies such as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), JIA is reported to have a negative impact on the quality of life of the patients and their caregivers. Ascertaining the perceptions of the parents will help facilitate more effective management strategies and improve outcomes for these patients. This study aimed to ascertain parental experiences and perceptions of caring for children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).

BACKGROUND: Time alone between adolescents with chronic illnesses and their clinicians may contribute to patient-centred care and transition readiness within this population. Shifts in the adolescent-parent-clinician relationship underpin this contribution; as such, this qualitative study explored adolescent, parent and clinician perspectives on time alone in routine visits for paediatric chronic illness.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with English-speaking adolescents (ages 12-17, n = 65) and their parents (n = 63) were conducted after follow-up visits for inflammatory bowel disease (IB

Sleep problems are common in Rett syndrome and other neurogenetic syndromes. Actigraphy is a cost-effective, objective method for measuring sleep. Current guidelines require caregiver-reported bed and wake times to facilitate actigraphy data scoring. The current study examined missingness and consistency of caregiver-reported bed and wake times from paper sleep diaries and actigraphy event mark button presses in a sample of 38 individuals with Rett and related syndromes (aged 2-36 years, mean = 13.1) across two 14-day collection time points. Rates of missingness and discrepancy between the 2 s

This study investigates the relationships between family dynamics, parental psychological distress, and functional impairment in Turkish autistic children. We recruited 100 families, including children aged 6-12 years diagnosed with autism and their parents. Autism severity was measured using the Childhood Autism Rating Scale. Parents completed validated tools, including the Brief Symptom Inventory and Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale-Parent Form, while mothers also completed the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale and Marital Adjustment Test. Mothers reported higher functi

BACKGROUND: There is promising evidence for the adaptation of online mindfulness interventions for parent carers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities by including supplementary peer support sessions. However, there remain questions about wider implementation beyond the research setting and the inclusion of more diverse populations of family caregivers, including adult siblings and family carers who less typically receive support and are often under-represented in research.
METHOD: One hundred and one family carers (n = 58 parents, n = 43 adult siblings) were provide

OBJECTIVE: A Western diet is associated with obesity, and the link between parental and offsprings' obesity is unclear. Among mice, this study examined how parents' Western diets affect their male offspring's obesity risk. This study further explored whether early exposure to obesogenic diets from either parent influences offsprings' long-term weight gain.
METHODS: Three-week-old C57BL6/NTac mice were assigned to a Western diet (WD) or control diet (CD), given from six to 14 weeks old. Adults from these dietary groups were then mated to create four breeding combinations: CD/CD, CD/WD, WD/CD,

IMPORTANCE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with poor health care use. In African American communities, where ACEs are more prevalent, it is critical to understand the association of ACEs with chronic illnesses, such as sickle cell disease (SCD), in children to expand trauma-informed care and improve outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between parental ACEs and health care use in pediatric patients with SCD, accounting for factors that may influence this association.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This unblinded cross-sectional study was conducted from Jan

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the association between parental severe mental disorders (SMDs) and onset polarity of bipolar disorder (BD) among their offspring. We aimed to investigate the association between parental SMDs and onset polarity of BD among their offspring.
METHODS: Offspring with BD were identified as the index group, and a demographic-matched group was selected as the controls. The primary outcome was the risk of parental SMDs, including schizophrenia, BD, depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), alcohol use disorder (AUD), and substance use disorder (S

Transgenerational immune priming (TGIP) is a phenomenon by which an initial exposure to a pathogen, here Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (causative agent of Proliferative Kidney Disease), stimulates the subsequent immune response to the same or a different pathogen in future generations. The impact of rearing conditions in previous generations, regardless of their exposure to the pathogen, on the immune cell composition and immune response in subsequent generations has not yet been investigated in the brown trout-T. bryosalmonae system. In the present work, we performed flow cytometry to analyze
