Transient total blindness associated with alcoholic ketoacidosis.

BACKGROUND: Methanol poisoning is often suspected in patients with high anion gap metabolic acidosis and visual deficits. Although alcoholic ketoacidosis can cause high anion gap metabolic acidosis, reports on vision loss are limited. We report the case of a patient with alcoholic ketoacidosis with transient total blindness. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old man complaining of total blindness was transferred to our hospital. Physical examination revealed a clear consciousness and mydriasis with an absence of pupillary light reflex. Blood analysis revealed high anion gap metabolic acidosis with

When systemic lupus erythematosus affects vision: a rare presentation of this condition.

A 23-year-old woman with fever, oral ulcers, arthalgias and weight loss of 2-week duration suddenly developed blurred vision, with reduced visual acuity, cotton wool exudates and retinal vascular tortuosity. Laboratory testing revealed anaemia, lymphopaenia, positive antinuclear antibody and high anti-dsDNA antibody titre with low complement components. There was no evidence of infection, clinching the diagnosis of lupus retinopathy. Steroid therapy alone was highly effective and was also accompanied by a normalisation of haemoglobin and lymphocyte counts, after which azathioprine was added. H

Lymphoma and unilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation: when both conditions co-exist in the eye.

The case is presented of a 60 year-old male with decreased visual acuity in his left eye (LE). In the funduscopic examination, pigmentary alterations associated with sub-retinal orange plaques could be observed that, in autofluorescence, manifested as hypoautofluorescent spots. Subsequently, the patient subsequently developed significant vitritis with large white sub-retinal plaques on the posterior pole of his LE, with no alterations in the right eye. The IL-10/IL-6 coefficient was 0.87, and a lesion suggestive of a lymphoma in the frontal lobe could be seen on brain magnetic resonance scan.
