Development of a CT-Compatible, Anthropomorphic Skull and Brain Phantom for Neurosurgical Planning, Training, and Simulation.

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgical procedures are complex and require years of training and experience. Traditional training on human cadavers is expensive, requires facilities and planning, and raises ethical concerns. Therefore, the use of anthropomorphic phantoms could be an excellent substitute. The aim of the study was to design and develop a patient-specific 3D-skull and brain model with realistic CT-attenuation suitable for conventional and augmented reality (AR)-navigated neurosurgical simulations. METHODS: The radiodensity of materials considered for the skull and brain phantoms were investig

Reconsidering Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Surgery and Postoperative Shunt Valve Pressure Adjustment: Our Approaches Learned From Past Challenges and Failures.

Treatment for idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) continues to develop. Although ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery has a long history and is one of the most established neurosurgeries, in the 1970s, the improvement rate of iNPH triad symptoms was poor and the risks related to shunt implantation were high. This led experts to question the surgical indication for iNPH and, over the next 20 years, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt surgery for iNPH fell out of favor and was rarely performed. However, the development of programmable-pressure shunt valve devices has reduced the major comp

Drug Trials in Status Epilepticus: Current Evidence and Future Concepts.

Status epilepticus (SE) is a neurologic emergency with high morbidity and mortality. After many advances in the field, several unanswered questions remain for optimal treatment after the early stage of SE. This narrative review describes some of the important drug trials for SE treatment that have shaped the understanding of the treatment of SE. The authors also propose possible clinical trial designs for the later stages of SE that may allow assessment of currently available and new treatment options. Status epilepticus can be divided into four stages for treatment purposes: early, establishe
