Mental Health Literacy, Stigma, and Help-Seeking Behavior Among Black Male College Students in Historically Black Universities.

Studies indicate that mental health literacy (MHL) is low among college students. Previous studies report that male college students score lower on MHL than female college students. MHL is connected to mental health help-seeking behavior. Black male college students are shown to be at higher risk for mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, yet are less likely to seek help for these problems compared with other racial groups. Challenges with mental health can lead to significant negative consequences, such as poor academic performance, social isol

Psilocybin Enhances Cued Fear Extinction and Extinction Recall in Stress-Naïve, Acutely Stressed, and Chronically Stressed Mice.

Serotonergic psychedelics have shown promise in clinical trials for treating an array of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Despite these findings, our understanding of how these drugs mechanistically exert their therapeutic effects remains incomplete. While researchers have regularly employed rodent preclinical models to assess such mechanisms, many of these findings arise from stress-naïve animals. Given that prior environmental stress is a critical component for the mental health disorders being studied in clinical trials of psychedel

Assessing the Needs of Military-Connected Children and Resources to Address Those Needs.

There is a growing concern around the mental and behavioral health of children and youth as such conditions as anxiety disorders, depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorders affect almost one in five children and youth ages 3 to 17. The coronavirus pandemic brought many challenges: Children missed years of in-person schooling and socialization, experienced increased social isolation, and developed an overreliance on technology and social media to stay connected, entertained, and participate in online schooling. Collectively, studies suggest that children and yout

Conductive nano nickel oxide/hydroxide paper electrochemical sensor for serotonin detection in genetically engineered Drosophila.

Serotonin is considered an integral part in neuropsychiatric diseases, such as major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder, and substance use disorder. Understanding the levels of serotonin under different disease conditions is important. Herein, we explored the development of an efficient electrochemical sensor utilizing sustainable paper electrode integrated with nanocomposites through a simultaneous electrochemical deposition strategy. The as-developed sensor is further investigated with surface and electrochemica

l-theanine: From tea leaf to trending supplement - does the science match the hype for brain health and relaxation?

l-Theanine is a unique non-protein amino acid found abundantly in tea leaves. Interest in its potential use as a dietary supplement has surged recently, especially claims related to promoting relaxation and cognitive enhancement. This review surveys the chemistry, metabolism, and purported biological activities of l-theanine. It is well absorbed from the intestine and can cross the blood-brain barrier. Some studies suggest l-theanine may increase alpha waves in the brain associated with relaxation and selective attention, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve sleep quality, though findings ar

Multimodal MRI-based radiomics in an ASD rat model: investigating brain structural changes and the neuroprotective effects of selenium.

INTRODUCTION: This study developed and validated a multimodal MRI-based radiomics model to assess brain changes in a rat model of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) following selenium intervention. METHODS: ASD was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats via prenatal valproic acid administration, with sodium selenite used for intervention. MRI modalities included T2-weighted imaging, T1 and T2 relaxation mapping, diffusion tensor imaging, and diffusion kurtosis imaging. Radiomics features were extracted, correlated with behavioral metrics, and analyzed using clustering and radiomics scoring. Logistic regr

Probiotic supplementation attenuated early-life chemotherapy-induced brain development impairment in mice.

BACKGROUND: Brain dysfunction is a common post-chemotherapy sequela in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) survivors and is associated with poor academic performance and reduced work ability. The prevention of brain dysfunction in ALL survivors remains a clinical challenge. In this study, we evaluated the preventive effects of probiotics on chemotherapy-induced brain development damage in a preclinical setting. METHODS: The clinical ALL chemotherapy setting was mimicked by intraperitoneally injecting doxorubicin into 4-week-old mice once every 3 days for 2 weeks. Probiotics were administered i

CaMKIIα hub ligands are unable to reverse known phenotypes in Angelman syndrome mice.

Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by the loss of function of ubiquitin-protein ligase E3A (UBE3A), resulting in marked changes in synaptic plasticity. In AS mice, a dysregulation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II alpha (CaMKIIα) was previously described. This has been convincingly validated through genetic rescue of prominent phenotypes in mouse cross-breeding experiments. Selective ligands that specifically stabilize the CaMKIIα central association (hub) domain and affect different conformational states in vitro are now available. Two of these ligands

Psychometric performance of the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 in females with anorexia nervosa: An examination of factor structure and Item Response Theory.

The Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) is widely used to assess intuitive eating (IE) behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs, yet its application in anorexia nervosa (AN) remains unclear. Given the disrupted interoceptive awareness and heightened cognitive control over eating in AN, it is less certain how IE constructs apply during acute stages of this disorder. This study evaluated the factor structure and item-level performance of the IES-2 in a clinical sample of 150 adolescent and adult females diagnosed with AN, upon admission to a residential treatment facility. Confirmatory Factor Analysis sup

Liposome-Encapsulated Melatonin Mitigates Amoxicillin-Induced Neurotoxicity in a Zebrafish.

Amoxicillin (Amx), a β-Lactam antibiotic frequently used to treat bacterial infections, has been linked to neurological effects, including anxiety, hyperactivity, ambiguity, seizures, and behavioural changes. We examined the neurotoxic effects of Amx in zebrafish and investigated the potential of liposome-encapsulated melatonin (L-Mel) as a therapeutic intervention. Computational studies have indicated that Amx and Mel interact with GABA receptors, suggesting the potential of L-Mel in mitigating Amx-induced neurological changes. Our findings demonstrated that the nanoformulated L-Mel showed re

Beyond technology: How XR quality features shape user experience and physical activity determinants in exergaming.

Promoting physical activity (PA) in healthcare is essential, yet inactivity remains widespread. Exergames (EGs) offer a playful strategy to foster PA. Implementation technologies range from screen-based consoles to Extended Reality (XR) devices. Because XR environments differ in experiential quality features (e.g., immersivity, interactivity, coherence), they may affect individual-level PA determinants (physical, psychological, biological). This mini-review examines if different XR environments influence the user experience and individual-level PA determinants in EGs, highlighting areas for fu

AAV9-Mediated Intrastriatal Delivery of Mutant HTT With 82 CAG Repeats Induces Huntington's Disease-Like Pathology and Behavioral Deficits in Mice.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by CAG repeat expansion in the HTT gene. Existing toxin-induced and genetic models provide important insights, but none fully replicate the progressive pathology of HD. An AAV9-mediated striatal mouse model expressing mutant HTT with 82 CAG repeats was established to reproduce hallmark neuropathological changes and behavioral deficits. Male C57BL/6 mice received bilateral intrastriatal injections of AAV9-HTT-82Q or control AAV9-GFP. Behavioral performance was assessed by rotarod, balance beam, open field, and

White matter integrity of right frontostriatal circuit predicts internet addiction severity among internet gamers.

Excessive use of the internet, which is a typical scenario of self-control failure, could lead to potential consequences such as anxiety, depression, and diminished academic performance. However, the underlying neuropsychological mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the structural basis of self-control and internet addiction. In a cohort of 96 internet gamers, we examined the relationships among grey matter volume and white matter integrity within the frontostriatal circuits and internet addiction severity, as well as self-control measures. The results showed a s

Psycho-physio-neurological correlates of qualitative attention, emotion and flow experiences in a close-to-real-life extreme sports situation: low- and high-altitude slackline walking.

It has been indicated that extreme sport activities result in a highly rewarding experience, despite also providing fear, stress and anxiety. Studies have related this experience to the concept of flow, a positive feeling that individuals undergo when they are completely immersed in an activity. However, little is known about the exact nature of these experiences, and, there are still no empirical results to characterize the brain dynamics during extreme sport practice. This work aimed at investigating changes in psychological responses while recording physiological (heart rate-HR, and breathi
