Periodontal disease and risk of Alzheimer's disease: A two-sample Mendelian randomization.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from observational studies and clinical trials suggests an association between periodontal disease and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the causal relationship between periodontal disease and AD remains to be determined. METHODS: We obtained periodontal disease data from the FinnGen database and two sets of AD data from the IEU consortium and PGC databases. Subsequently, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal relationship between periodontal disease and AD. RESULTS: The results of the random-effects IVW analysis reveal

Vaspin facilitates the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether visceral adipose tissue-derived serine protease inhibitor (vaspin) can alleviate the inhibitory effect of high-glucose (HG) culture on the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) and to preliminarily explore the underlying mechanisms. BACKGROUND: High glucose produces damage to the regeneration of periodontal tissue of PDLSCs. The expression level of vaspin in periodontal tissue is high in periodontitis patients and effectively reduced after initial therapy of periodontal diseases. However, the effect of

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Infection of Human Periodontal Ligament.

The periodontal ligament (PDL) is a complex connective tissue that connects the tooth root to the dental alveolar bone and plays crucial mechanical roles. PDL also exhibits regenerative roles and regulatory functions to maintain periodontium integrity and homeostasis. While PDL exposure to oral microbial pathogens is common, virtually nothing is known regarding viral infections of PDL. In particular, human herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) persistently infects the oral cavity through infections of the oral epithelium, connective tissue and neurons. While the oral spread of HSV-1 is generally

The Role of Proper Nutrition for Patients Undergoing Periodontal Surgery: A Scoping Review.

Nutrition has been recognized as a foundation for good oral health and general health, with a bidirectional relationship having been established between nutrition and oral and overall health.1 Various specific macro- and micronutrients from the intake of food serve as fuel for a person's body to grow and function.1 The oral cavity plays the unique role of gatekeeper, providing the pathway of nutrition to the body. Because of the rapid cell turnover of oral mucosa, the oral cavity also may manifest early signs of nutrient deficiencies as well as other indicators of systemic disease.2 As a resul

N6-methyladenosine-mediated overexpression of TREM-1 is associated with periodontal disease.

Periodontitis, a prevalent inflammatory disease, involves the destruction of tooth-supporting tissues. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is a type of post-transcriptional modification that significantly influences gene and protein expression. It is involved in the regulation of various diseases, including those with an inflammatory component. This study investigates the potential role of m6A-mediated TREM-1 expression in the development of periodontitis. Clinical features and TREM-1 expression were assessed in periodontitis patients and healthy controls. LPS-stimulated human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs)
