A Significant Association between Parathyroid Adenoma Volume and Bone Mineral Loss at Distal Forearm.

INTRODUCTION: The cortical bone is the most severely affected site in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and thus, a low bone mineral density (BMD) is predominantly observed in distal forearm. Several studies have investigated potential associations between the weight of the gland and bone mineral loss. In this study, we wanted to investigate the relationship between parathyroid adenoma (PTA) volume and bone mineral loss. METHODS: All patients with a diagnosis of PHPT who were operated at our hospital, and with a histologically proven single PTA were retrospectively analyzed. Z-

Evaluating Male Patients' Understanding of Osteoporosis Evaluation and Treatment Following a Distal Radius Fracture.

PURPOSE: Current estimates suggest that 1-2 million men in the United States have osteoporosis, yet the majority of osteoporosis literature focuses on postmenopausal women. Our aim was to understand men's awareness and knowledge of osteoporosis and its treatment. METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 20 male patients >50 years old who sustained a low-energy distal radius fracture. The goal was to ascertain patients' knowledge of osteoporosis, its management, and experience discussing osteoporosis with their primary care physicians (PCP). RESULTS: Participants had little know

Automated measurement of size of spinal curve in population-based cohorts: Validation of a method based on total body dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scans.

BACKGROUND: Scoliosis is spinal curvature that may progress to require surgical stabilisation. Risk factors for progression are little understood due to lack of population-based research, since radiographs cannot be performed on entire populations due to high levels of radiation. To help address this, we have previously developed and validated a method for quantification of spinal curvature from total body dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. The purpose of this study was to automate this quantification of spinal curve size from DXA scans using machine learning techniques. METHODS: T

Liver enzyme inducing anticonvulsant drug use is associated with prevalent vertebral fracture.

UNLABELLED: Among those who use of liver-enzyme inducing anticonvulsant medication for more than 2 years, 27% have a prevalent vertebral fracture on vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) lateral spine imaging. VFA imaging at the time of bone densitometry may be appropriate for older individuals who are chronic users of these medications. PURPOSE: It is unclear whether prevalent vertebral fractures are associated with use of anticonvulsant drugs, especially those that induce liver enzymes (LEI) that metabolize drugs and vitamin D. Our purpose was to estimate the prevalence of vertebral fracture

The relationship between dietary inflammatory index and bone mineral density in CKD patients.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic systemic inflammation was proposed as a critical factor in the development of osteoporosis. We aim to investigate the effect of the DII on bone mineral density (BMD) in CKD patients. METHODS: 2276 participants from NHANES were enrolled. The DII score was calculated based on a single 24-h dietary recall. Total BMD was measured using Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. A multiple-stepwise linear regression model was used to determine associations between BMD and DII in CKD patients. RESULTS: When DII >0.35, a negative correlation was obtained between DII and BMD (all β = -0

Differences between bone health parameters in adults with acromegaly and growth hormone deficiency: A systematic review.

Preserving bone health is an important goal of care of patients with acromegaly and growth hormone deficiency (GHD). Both disorders are associated with compromised bone health and an increased risk of fracture. However, parameters of bone health that are routinely used to predict fractures in other populations, such as aBMD measured by DXA, are unreliable for this in acromegaly and GHD. Additional methodologies need to be employed to assess bone health in these patients. This review summarizes available data on the effects of acromegaly and GHD on parameters of bone health such as aBMD, volume

Overweight BMI (25-29) in Active Duty Military: Excess Fat or More Lean Mass? A Look at the Evidence.

Many active duty service members and their health care providers feel that the current body mass index (BMI) standard for diagnosing obesity, BMI ≥30 kg/m2, may unfairly overclassify as obese those with higher muscle mass. Unfortunately, a closer look at the data available for service members repeatedly demonstrates the exact opposite: we are actually underestimating the rates of obesity in service members using current BMI cutoffs when compared with body fat mass as measured by either dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry or bioelectrical impedance analysis as the gold standard. Using a lower BMI

Changes in cerebral blood flow in the postoperative chronic phase after combined cerebral revascularization for moyamoya disease with ischaemic onset.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of combined revascularization for ischaemic-onset moyamoya disease (MMD) on cerebral haemodynamics by comparing cerebral blood flow (CBF) during the postoperative chronic phase with preoperative CBF. A retrospective cohort of 24 MMD patients (representing 31 surgeries) who received single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) before and more than 6 months after surgery was investigated. The CBF value of each vascular territory was extracted from SPECT data, and the value relative to the ipsilateral cerebellar value (relative CBF, or RC

Prognostic utility of self-reported sarcopenia (SARC-F) in the Multiethnic Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Age-related loss in skeletal muscle mass, quality, and strength, known as sarcopenia, is a well-known phenomenon of aging and is determined clinically using methods such as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). However, these clinical methods to measure sarcopenia are not practical for population-based studies, and a five-question screening tool known as SARC-F has been validated to screen for sarcopenia. METHODS: We investigated the relationship between appendicular skeletal lean mass/height2 (ALM/HT2 ) (kg/m2 ) assessed by DXA and SARC-F in a subset of 1538 (778 men and 760 wo

Biochemical and clinical manifestations in adults with hypophosphatasia: a national cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare disease affecting bone mineralization. Adults with HPP have an increased occurrence of low-energy fractures, which cannot be explained by reduced bone mass assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The bone phenotype in adults with HPP requires further studies investigating bone strength and bone structural parameters. INTRODUCTION: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare inherited disorder of bone and mineral metabolism, characterized by broad-ranging clinical manifestations and severity. However, studies investigating the clinical spectrum in adults

Fracture risk assessment in diabetes mellitus.

Growing evidence suggests that diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of fracture. Bone intrinsic factors (such as accumulation of glycation end products, low bone turnover, and bone microstructural changes) and extrinsic factors (such as hypoglycemia caused by treatment, diabetes peripheral neuropathy, muscle weakness, visual impairment, and some hypoglycemic agents affecting bone metabolism) probably contribute to damage of bone strength and the increased risk of fragility fracture. Traditionally, bone mineral density (BMD) measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is consi
