The objective of this study is to evaluate the correlation between dietary patterns, levels of physical activity (PA), and the occurrence of periodontal disease. Many lifestyles have been connected to periodontal disease, but little is known about diet and PA intake. This study included 185 people-62 healthy, 61 gingivitis, and 62 periodontitis. PA, Mediterranean diet score (MDS), and carbohydrate consumption frequency were gathered together with demographics. Clinical and radiographic evaluations calculated decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index scores. PA, MDS, carbohydrate consumpt

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Parkinson's Disease (PD) often experience not only physical symptoms but also a higher prevalence of psychological issues, including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and psychotic symptoms, compared to the general population. The relationship between these physical and psychological symptoms remains poorly understood, particularly in relation to commonly used measures of physical function and a wider variety of psychological symptoms. Investigating this link is essential for optimising patient care. This cohort study is registered with OSF (https://osf.io/c7tvd)

IMPORTANCE: There are considerable socioeconomic status (SES) disparities in youth physical activity (PA) levels. For example, studies show that lower-SES youth are less active, have lower participation in organized sports and physical education classes, and have more limited access to PA equipment.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the potential public health and economic effects of eliminating disparities in PA levels among US youth SES groups.
DESIGN AND SETTING: An agent-based model representing all 6- to 17-year-old children in the US was used to simulate the epidemiological, clinical, and econom

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness has been studied as a treatment option for a large range of psychological disorders and is associated with a multitude of positive psychological outcomes. There are now several scales for measuring mindfulness as both a trait and a state. As mindfulness potentially plays a critical role in maintaining physical activity habits, the State Mindfulness Scale for Physical Activity (SMS-PA) was developed to specifically measure mindfulness in a physical activity context. This study aimed to provide validity evidence for a German version of the SMS-PA (henceforth called SMS-PA

Posttraumatic stress disorder is associated with autonomic hyperarousal often shown to involve elevated resting heart rate and, simultaneously if somewhat paradoxically, reduced physical activity. Both are risk factors for cardiovascular disease and so may contribute to its elevated prevalence in persons with this diagnosis. Epidemiological studies have observed dog owners to exhibit lower rates of cardiovascular disease. Non-randomized between-group studies have found service dog companionship to be associated with increased physical activity and with lower resting heart rate. A challenge to

BACKGROUND: Intensive care medicine continues to improve, with advances in technology and care provision leading to improved patient survival. However, this has not been matched by similar advances in ICU bedspace design. Environmental factors including excessive noise, suboptimal lighting, and lack of natural lights and views can adversely impact staff wellbeing and short- and long-term patient outcomes. The personal, social, and economic costs associated with this are potentially large. The ICU of the Future project was conceived to address these issues. This is a mixed-method project, aimin

To develop and validate a machine learning based algorithm to estimate physical activity (PA) intensity using the smartwatch with the capacity to record PA and determine outdoor state. Two groups of participants, including 24 adults (13 males) and 18 children (9 boys), completed a sequential activity trial. During each trial, participants wore a smartwatch, and energy expenditure was measured using indirect calorimetry as gold standard. The support vector machine algorithm and the least squares regression model were applied for the metabolic equivalent (MET) estimation using raw data derived f

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a persistent metabolic disorder associated with the hormone insulin. The two main types of DM are type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 (T2DM). Physical activity plays a crucial role in the therapy of diabetes, benefiting both types of patients. The detection, recognition, and subsequent classification of physical activity based on type and intensity are integral components of DM treatment. The continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) signal provides the blood glucose (BG) level, and the combination of CGMS and heart rate (HR) signals are potential targets for detecting relevan

INTRODUCTION: Physical function and cognition seem to be interrelated, especially in the oldest-old. However, the temporal order in which they are related and the role of brain health remain uncertain.
METHODS: We included 338 participants (mean age 93.1 years) from two longitudinal cohorts: the UCI 90+ Study and EMIF-AD 90+ Study. We tested the association between physical function (Short Physical Performance Battery, gait speed, and handgrip strength) at baseline with cognitive decline (MMSE, memory tests, animal fluency, Trail Making Test (TMT-) A, and digit span backward) and the associat
