The retinogeniculate fiber projections were studied by degeneration methods in several strains of rats with pigmentation in their eyes and pelts ranging from the intensely pigmented self phenotype to the albino. The ipsilateral retinogeniculate input in the self, Irish, and hooded rats, and rats with "bicolor fundus" is located medially within the dorsal alteral geniculate nucleus (LGd) and is seen as a single lamina of moderately dense degeneration.

The cause of hyperpigmentation, such as solar lentigo and seborrheic keratosis, is the excessive accumulation of melanin pigments in the epidermal basal layer. It has been postulated that propranolol lowers the intraocular pressure by adrenergic neurone block. An autopsy case of a 69-year-old woman showing black discoloration of the thyroid gland designated as "Black thyroid" was reported. The patient received long-term, high dose antibiotics minocycline therapy (total dose: 70 g) for bronchial asthma associated with respiratory infection and died of uterine cancer. The thyroid gland was coal black in color and histological examination revealed numerous dark brown pigments scattered in the follicular epithelium and colloid matrix. Special stains and electron microscopic examination suggested these deposited pigments to be consistent with lipofuscin.

Electron-microscopic examination of freeze-fractured fly retinae has revealed the presence of particles, 80 to 100 A in diameter, on the photoreceptor membrane. Flies which were raised on a vitamin-A deficient diet show a substantial reduction in the density of such particles. The reduction in particle density is in agreement with the reduction in visual-pigment concentration as measured spectrophotometrically for these flies. These results suggest that the particles are identical with molecules of the visual pigment, rhodopsin.
