We analysed the polymorphisms of HLA-DM genes in 85 unrelated Japanese patients with psoriasis vulgaris and 52 healthy controls using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. The frequency of DMA*0101 was decreased (79% vs. 89%, P < 0.05) and that of DMA*0102 was increased (20% vs. 11%, P < 0.05) in the patients. A simple polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for rapid identification of different species of mycobacteria was developed. This study used the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction method to determine mRNA transcription of subgingival human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) in six adult and three localized juvenile periodontitis patients. The oligonucleotide primers targeted the major capsid protein gene to determine active HCMV infection. HCMV major capsid protein transcript was detected in deep periodontal pockets of two adult and two localized juvenile periodontitis patients but not in any shallow periodontal sites. The authors report a case of non-polyposis colon cancer in a seventeen year old female without prior polyposis or family history. Since it was the first case in this family, HNPCC was suspected. A survey for Arcobacter spp. and Arcobacter butzleri in mechanically separated turkey was conducted during the winter of 1995 and summer and fall of 1996. PURPOSE: To determine the cause of bilateral retrobulbar optic neuritis followed by progressive outer retinal necrosis in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
METHODS: Extensive ophthalmologic, neurologic, infectious disease, rheumatologic, and radiologic examinations were performed.
RESULTS: Cerebrospinal fluid samples taken after the onset of bilateral retrobulbar optic neuritis and before the development of clinical progressive outer retinal necrosis disclosed varicella-zoster virus from polymerase chain reaction and viral culture.

Four allogeneic bone marrow transplant patients who were infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) before bone marrow transplantation (BMT) were treated with oral ribavirin during and after transplantation. None of the patients had severe liver complications. One patient died early. Polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that two patients who were HCV RNA-positive before BMT became HCV RNA-negative during therapy and remained HCV RNA-negative during 6 and 12 months of follow-up, respectively. Immunohistochemical investigation showed that intranasal inoculation of mice with a temperature-sensitive (ts) mutant of parainfluenza type 1 vaccine virus resulted in infection of some olfactory neurons as well as respiratory epithelial cells. 73 women suffering from primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube underwent surgical excision of their tubes. The tissue was embedded in paraffin and investigated for HER-2 oncogene amplification with a quantitative polymerase chain reaction method.
