Relationship between DXA measured systemic bone mineral density and subchondral bone cysts in postmenopausal female patients with knee osteoarthritis: a cross-sectional study : Osteoarthritis cysts and bone mineral density.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with high systemic bone mineral density (BMD) may have an increased risk of incident knee osteoarthritis (OA). Besides that, radiographic osteophytes are strongly associated with BMD. Because of these reasons, the aim of the study was to investigate the possible association between radiological subchondral bone cyst (SBC) grade and systemic BMD and vitamin D status in the postmenopausal female patients with knee OA in a crosss-sectional study. METHODS: This study included of 48 osteoporosis treatment-free postmenopausal patients diagnosed with symptomatic medial compar

Adjuvant denosumab in postmenopausal patients with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer (ABCSG-18): disease-free survival results from a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial.

BACKGROUND: In postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive, early-stage breast cancer, treatment with adjuvant aromatase inhibitors is the standard of care, but it increases risk for osteoporosis and fractures. Results from the ABCSG-18 trial showed that use of denosumab as an adjuvant to aromatase inhibitor therapy significantly reduced clinical fractures. Disease-free survival outcomes from ABCSG-18 have not yet been reported. METHODS: Postmenopausal patients with early, hormone receptor-positive, non-metastatic adenocarcinoma of the breast, who had completed their initial adjuvant

In healthy elderly postmenopausal women variations in BMD and BMC at various skeletal sites are associated with differences in weight and lean body mass rather than by variations in habitual physical activity, strength or VO2max.

The objective of this study was an integrated cross-sectional investigation for answering the question whether differences in bone mineral density in elderly postmenopausal women are associated with differences in habitual physical activity and unspecific exercise levels. Two hundred and ninety nine elderly women (69-/+3 years), without diseases or medication affecting bone metabolism were investigated. The influence of weight, body composition and physical activity on BMD was measured at multiple sites using different techniques (DXA, QCT, and QUS). Physical activity and exercise level were a

Low dietary potassium intakes and high dietary estimates of net endogenous acid production are associated with low bone mineral density in premenopausal women and increased markers of bone resorption in postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: The Western diet may be a risk factor for osteoporosis. Excess acid generated from high protein intakes increases calcium excretion and bone resorption. Fruit and vegetable intake could balance this excess acidity by providing alkaline salts of potassium. Algorithms based on dietary intakes of key nutrients can be used to approximate net endogenous acid production (NEAP) and to explore the association between dietary acidity and bone health. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the relation between dietary potassium and protein, NEAP (with an algorithm including the ratio of protein to pota

Administration of a supplement containing both calcium and vitamin D is more effective than calcium alone to reduce secondary hyperparathyroidism in postmenopausal women with low 25(OH)vitamin D circulating levels.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Supplementation of postmenopausal women with calcium alone or calcium-vitamin D association was suggested to have positive effects on bone turnover and bone density, as well as to lower fracture incidence. The beneficial effect appears to be mediated by a reduction in parathyroid hormone secretion. Our aim was to compare the respective efficacy of calcium and calcium-vitamin D supplements in reducing serum parathyroid hormone levels in postmenopausal women with prevalent low 25(OH)vitamin D levels. METHODS: One hundred consecutive ambulatory postmenopausal women with seru

Quantitative computed tomography of the lumbar spine, not dual x-ray absorptiometry, is an independent predictor of prevalent vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women with osteopenia receiving long-term glucocorticoid and hormone-replacement therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine which measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) predicts vertebral fractures in a cohort of postmenopausal women with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. METHODS: We recruited 114 subjects into the study. All had osteopenia of the lumbar spine or hip, as demonstrated by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and were receiving long-term glucocorticoids and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Measurements of BMD by DXA of the lumbar spine, hip (and subregions), and forearm (and subregions), quantitative computed tomography (QCT) of the spine and hip (n = 59), and radiographs

Effects of estrogen and parathyroid hormone on osteoblastic activity via regulating the binding activity of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-4 in SaOS-2 cells: implications for the pathogenesis of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

The cellular mechanisms involved in the accelerated bone loss occurring in association with estrogen deprivation as seen following the menopause have not been fully understood. Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) is the local regulator of osteoblasts and one of its binding protein, insulin-like growth factor binding protein-4 (IGFBP-4), binds to IGF-I and suppresses its biological activity. We have therefore studied the effects of 17 beta-estradiol and parathyroid hormone (PTH) on binding activity of IGFBP-4 and osteoblastic activity using SaOS-2 osteoblastic cells. The effects of rTMS combined with blood flow restriction low-intensity resistance training on skeletal muscle mass, strength, and physical function in postmenopausal women: a single-blind randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Skeletal muscle serves as the primary source of power for body movement. Due to the transition of menopause, older women experience a relatively faster decline in skeletal muscle mass and function, making them more susceptible to age-related skeletal muscle disorders such as sarcopenia, which can lead to adverse outcomes such as falls, fractures, disability, or even death. Blood flow restriction low-intensity resistance training (LI-BFRT) can effectively enhance muscle strength and promote skeletal muscle growth, while repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has previou

Nonlinear association of triglyceride-glucose body mass index with all-cause mortality in postmenopausal women, a retrospective cohort study: Evidence from the 2001 to 2014 National Health and nutrition examination survey.

BACKGROUND: The triglyceride-glucose body mass index (TyG-BMI) is a novel indicator combining an insulin resistance proxy (TyG index) with adiposity. It remains unclear how TyG-BMI relates to long-term mortality risk in postmenopausal women, a group prone to metabolic changes after menopause. This study investigated the association between TyG-BMI and all-cause mortality, with secondary outcomes of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and cancer mortality, in a nationally representative cohort of US postmenopausal women. METHODS: We analyzed data from 3844 postmenopausal women (mean age 64.

Comparison of the therapeutic effects of mesenchymal stem cells derived from human dental pulp (DP), adipose tissue (AD), placental amniotic membrane (PM), and umbilical cord (UC) on postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Background: Osteoporosis is a systemic bone disease characterized by bone loss and microstructural degeneration. Recent preclinical and clinical trials have further demonstrated that the transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from human adipose tissue (AD), dental pulp (DP), placental amniotic membrane (AM), and umbilical cord (UC) tissues can serve as an effective form of cell therapy for osteoporosis. However, MSC-mediated osteoimmunology and the ability of these cells to regulate osteoclast-osteoblast differentiation varies markedly among different types of MSCs. Methods:
