The space of affordances: a TMS study.

Previous studies have shown a motor recruitment during the observation of graspable objects. This recruitment has been considered crucial in encoding the observed objects in terms of one or more potential motor acts. However, an agent can actually act upon an object only when the latter is close enough to be reached. Thus, the question we deal with in this paper is whether the motor system is always activated whenever a graspable object comes into view or whether it requires the object to be located within the reachable space of the perceiver. The left primary motor cortex was magnetically sti

Beneficial effect of erythropoietin on sensorimotor function and white matter after hypoxia-ischemia in neonatal mice.

There are mixed reports on the neuroprotective properties of erythropoietin (EPO) in animal models of birth asphyxia. We investigated the effect of EPO on short- and long-term outcome after neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury in mice and compared the effect of two different dose regimens of EPO. Nine-day-old mice were subjected to HI, and EPO was injected i.p. at 0, 24, and 48 h after HI in a dose of either 5 or 20 kU/kg. Paw preference in the cylinder rearing test (CRT) was used as a measure of sensorimotor function. Only in female mice, administration of EPO at 5 kU/kg but not 20 kU/

An fMRI study of musicians with focal dystonia during tapping tasks.

Musician's dystonia is a type of task specific dystonia for which the pathophysiology is not clear. In this study, we performed functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the motor-related brain activity associated with musician's dystonia. We compared brain activities measured from subjects with focal hand dystonia and normal (control) musicians during right-hand, left-hand, and both-hands tapping tasks. We found activations in the thalamus and the basal ganglia during the tapping tasks in the control group but not in the dystonia group. For both groups, we detected significant acti

Nonhomogeneous results in place learning among panic disorder patients with agoraphobia.

Patients affected by panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA) often suffer from visuo-spatial disturbances. In the present study, we tested the place-learning abilities in a sample of 31 PDA patients compared to 31 healthy controls (CTR) using the computer-generated arena (C-G Arena), a desktop-based computer program developed at the University of Arizona (Jacobs et al 1997, for further detail about the program, see http://web.arizona.edu/~arg/data.html). Subjects were asked to search the computer-generated space, over several trials, for the location of a hidden target. Results showed that contr

Development, validation and implementation of a monitoring tool for training in laparoscopic colorectal surgery in the English National Training Program.

INTRODUCTION: The National Training Program for laparoscopic colorectal surgery (LCS) provides supervised training to colorectal surgeons in England. The purpose of this study was to create, validate, and implement a method for monitoring training progression in laparoscopic colorectal surgery that met the requirements of a good assessment tool. METHODS: A generic scale for different tasks in LCS was created under the guidance of a national expert group. The scores were defined by the extent to which the trainees were dependent on support (1 = unable to perform, 5 = unaided (benchmark), 6 = p

Maternal mental health and childrearing context in the development of children at 6, 18 and 36 months: a Taiwan birth cohort pilot study.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated a possible pathway of the childrearing context and maternal mental health at 6 months, and how these factors influence children's development at 6, 18 and 36 months. METHODS: Using random sampling, 2048 children and mothers were selected. The mother's health status was evaluated using the Taiwanese version of the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), and infant development was assessed using the high reliable Taiwan birth cohort study instrument. All data were collected using parental self-report, and were analysed using multiple linear regression analy

Double dissociation between motor and visual imagery in the posterior parietal cortex.

Because motor imagery (MI) and visual imagery (VI) are influenced differently by factors such as biomechanical constraints or stimulus size, it is conceivable that they rely on separate processes, possibly involving distinct cortical networks, a view corroborated by neuroimaging and neuropsychological studies. In the posterior parietal cortex, it has been suggested that the superior parietal lobule (SPL) underlies VI, whereas MI relies on the supramarginalis gyrus (SMG). However, because several brain imaging studies have also shown an overlap of activations in SPL and SMG during VI or MI, the

Case-control study of writer's cramp.

Task-specific focal dystonias are thought to be due to a combination of individual vulnerability and environmental factors. There are no case-control studies of risk factors for writer's cramp. We undertook a case-control study of 104 consecutive patients and matched controls to identify risk factors for the condition. We collected detailed data on medical history and writing history as part of hobbies or occupation. Cases had a college or university degree more frequently than controls [OR = 4.6 (1.3-20.5), P = 0.01]. The risk of writer's cramp increased with the time spent writing each day (

Increased effect of target eccentricity on covert shifts of visual attention in patients with neglect.

Debate continues regarding the mechanisms underlying covert shifts of visual attention. We examined the relationship between target eccentricity and the speed of covert shifts of attention in normal subjects and patients with brain lesions using a cued-response task in which cues and targets were presented at 2 degrees or 8 degrees lateral to the fixation point. Normal subjects were slower on invalid trials in the 8 degrees as compared to 2 degrees condition. Patients with right-hemisphere stroke with neglect were slower in their responses to left-sided invalid targets compared to valid target

[Driving ability and dementia].

Physiological changes in cognitive competence in the elderly are clearly different to pathological changes such as dementia. Diagnosing dementia is not to be equated with absolute driving inability. During the course of dementia, the risk of an accident increases significantly. Detailed observation and regular checks serve to determine the appropriate time to hand in the driving licence. The basis of each decision should be a detailed history of the person and his or her immediate family. Attention should be paid to incorrect driving practise, unusual behaviour and uncertainty whilst driving a

Early postnatal behavioral changes in the Mecp2-308 truncation mouse model of Rett syndrome.

In a mouse model of Rett syndrome (RTT) which expresses a truncated form of methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (Mecp2) gene (Mecp2-308), we performed a neurobehavioral evaluation across the life span, starting from soon after birth till adulthood. A focus was made on those developmental phases and behavioral domains which have not been previously investigated. The results evidenced subtle anomalies on postnatal days (pnds) 3 to 9 (so-called presymptomatic phase) in spontaneous movements by hemizygous neonatal male mice. Specifically as early as pnd 3, mutant pups exhibited more intense curling and m

Social cognition in schizophrenia: similarities and differences of emotional perception from patients with focal frontal lesions.

The structural and functional abnormalities of the frontal lobes, the region implicated in social information processing, have been suspected to underlie social cognitive impairments in schizophrenia. However, multiple structures, including the limbic/paralimbic areas that are also important for social cognition, have been reported to be abnormal in schizophrenia. The aim of this study is to investigate the extent to which the frontal lobe dysfunction accounts for social cognitive impairments in schizophrenia by comparing with patients who have focal frontal lobe injuries. Social cognitive abi

The neural substrate of gesture recognition.

Previous studies have linked action recognition with a particular pool of neurons located in the ventral premotor cortex, the posterior parietal cortex and the superior temporal sulcus (the mirror neuron system). However, it is still unclear if transitive and intransitive gestures share the same neural substrates during action-recognition processes. In the present study, we used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess the cortical areas active during recognition of pantomimed transitive actions, intransitive gestures, and meaningless control actions. Relationship of temporal lobe volumes to neuropsychological test performance in healthy children.

Ecological validity of neuropsychological assessment includes the ability of tests to predict real-world functioning and/or covary with brain structures. Studies have examined the relationship between adaptive skills and test performance, with less focus on the association between regional brain volumes and neurobehavioral function in healthy children. The present study examined the relationship between temporal lobe gray matter volumes and performance on two neuropsychological tests hypothesized to measure temporal lobe functioning (visual perception-VP; peabody picture vocabulary test, third

Cortical responses to Mozart's sonata enhance spatial-reasoning ability.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examined the effects of Mozart's music on spatial-reasoning ability by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). METHODS: The subjects comprised five males and five females (aged 25-35 years). They were administered the seven original core subtests of the Japanese version of the Tanaka B-type intelligence test, which includes a spatial-reasoning subtest. We used three different music conditions: Mozart's sonata (K. 448), Beethoven and a silent control condition. Moreover, we used optical topography to assess the effects of music on brain function with a spatial-reasoning

The time course of amplitude specification in brief interceptive actions.

The interception of fast moving objects typically allows the object to be seen for only a short period of time. This limits the time available to prepare the movement. To deal with short preparation intervals, performers are likely to prepare a motor program in advance. Although motor preparation may begin before the target is seen, accuracy requires that certain program parameters are determined from observations of the target. In the experiments reported here we sought to determine the last moment at which information about the distance to move (amplitude) can be incorporated into a program.

Involuntary cueing effects during smooth pursuit: facilitation and inhibition of return in oculocentric coordinates.

Peripheral cues induce facilitation with short cue-target intervals and inhibition of return (IOR) with long cue-target intervals. Modulations of facilitation and IOR by continuous displacements of the eye or the cued stimuli are poorly understood. Previously, the retinal coordinates of the cued location were changed by saccadic or smooth pursuit eye movements during the cue-target interval. In contrast, we probed the relevant coordinates for facilitation and IOR by orthogonally varying object motion (stationary, moving) and eye movement (fixation, smooth pursuit). In the pursuit conditions, c

Temporal feature of BOLD responses varies with temporal patterns of movement.

Which brain sites represent the final form of motor commands that encode temporal patterns of muscle activities? Here, we show the possible brain sites which have activity equivalent to the motor commands with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We hypothesized that short-temporal patterns of movements or stimuli are reflected in blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) responses and we searched for regions representing the response. Participants performed two temporal patterns of tapping and/or listened to the same patterns of auditory stimuli in a 3T fMRI. The patterns were designe
