INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The study examined the relationships between length of career (LOC), clinical presentation and outcomes across 36 months among a cohort of 615 heroin users.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Longitudinal cohort study.
RESULTS: At baseline, each additional year of heroin use was associated with increased likelihood of: being male, exposure to treatment, having been imprisoned, daily injecting, lifetime and recent polydrug use, having overdosed, poorer physical health and reduced likelihood of heroin smoking. In contrast, LOC was not related to frequency of heroin use, current polydru

Linville's self-complexity (SC) theory suggests that reduced SC exacerbates the effects of stress, thereby creating a vulnerability to psychopathology. This exploratory study investigated SC in individuals experiencing auditory hallucinations. Twenty-two clinical participants experiencing auditory hallucinations were recruited from inpatient and outpatient services. Twenty-two control participants, matched on age and gender, were recruited from non-clinical settings. All participants completed a card sort task relating to the self, and questionnaires of affect, self-esteem and recent stress. A

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between biological stress regulation and somatic complaints in young girls prior to the onset of clear psychopathology such as somatization disorder.
METHODS: Salivary cortisol, heart rate variability (HRV), and negative mood were assessed in 48 12-year-old girls in response to the Trier Social Stress Test for Children (TSST-C). Parent and child report on the Children's Somatization Inventory was used to identify girls with high and low somatic complaints.
RESULTS: Girls with high levels of somatic complaints had significantly higher initial levels of co

Parent-child relationships may have a significant effect on illness characteristics of children with pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD), and these relationships may, in turn, be affected by the child's illness. We characterized maternal reports of parent-child relationships using the five-factor Parent-Child Relationship Questionnaire (PCRQ) in 60 families (30 PBD youth and 30 matched controls). Data on child proband and parental psychopathology were also obtained. Compared to controls, parent-child relationships in the PBD group were characterized by significantly less warmth, affection, and in

Neuroticism is a personality trait associated with negative mood states, sensitivity to negative information, negative appraisal and vulnerability to psychopathology. Previous studies have associated the sustained processing of negative information (words) with individual differences such as rumination and depression but not with personality. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between neuroticism and changes in sustained patterns of activity within a brain region implicated in emotional self-evaluation and appraisal, the Medial Prefrontal Cortex (MedPFC), when respo

Longitudinal research on the determinants of gambling behavior is sparse. This article briefly reviews the previous seventeen longitudinally designed studies, focusing on the methodology for each study. This is followed by a description of our ongoing longitudinal study entitled the Leisure, Lifestyle, and Lifecycle Project (LLLP). Participants for the LLLP were recruited from four locations in Alberta, Canada, including both rural and urban populations. In the LLLP most participants were recruited using random digit dialing (RDD), with 1808 participants from 5 age cohorts at baseline: 13-15,

Elements of family dynamics have been shown to be related to onset, course, as well as prognosis of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The goal was to explore the experience of family relations in a group of patients with eating disorders using a projective family test. The Patient group (anorexia=21, bulimia=16), as well as a healthy Control group, were given a projective family test, the Eating Disorder Inventory-2, as well as Karolinska Scales of Personality. The Patient group expressed more discord within the family picture than the Control group, such as cold and loveless relationships

Evidence suggests a relationship between parental depression and phobias in offspring as well as links between childhood fears and risk for major depression. This study examines the relationship between major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders in parents and specific fears and phobias in offspring. Three hundred and eighteen children of parents with lifetime MDD, anxiety disorder, MDD+anxiety disorder, or neither were psychiatrically assessed via parent interview. Rates of specific phobias in offspring did not differ significantly across parental groups. Specific fears were signif

Hopelessness is a clinically important state relative to morbidity and suicide risk among university students. We examined its role in relation to presenting concerns, diagnosis, psychopharmacologic treatment and spiritual orientation among students seeking treatment at a university counseling center. The most commonly identified concern was anxiety, followed by stress and depression. Eighty-two percent were given a DSM IV diagnosis. Hopelessness was higher among students dually diagnosed with anxiety and depressive disorders and those who were started on psychiatric medication. Spirituality w

The following article reviews literature pertaining to the association between child maltreatment and self-injury and the ways it varies according to maltreatment type. Research supporting various mediators of the relations between different maltreatment types and self-injury is summarized. Informing mediator models, dominant theories of functionality, particularly affect regulation theories, are summarized and granted empirical support. Following from explanations of its functionality, three developmental pathways (regulatory, representational/interpersonal, and reactive/neurobiological) lead

The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Schizotypal Ambivalence Scale (SAS) in a sample of 1798 young adults. The study also investigated the concurrent validity of the measure for identifying schizophrenic-like symptoms in a sample of 43 high scorers on the scale and 43 control participants. Previous findings indicated that high scores on the SAS were associated with schizophrenia-spectrum pathology in a sample of schizotypic young adults selected with other measures. However, this is the first study to assess schizophrenic-like psychopathology in a sample selected using

OBJECTIVE: Existing self-report methods for assessing eating disorder (ED) symptoms in youth do not adequately measure binge eating and lack sufficient psychometric support. The Youth Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (YEDE-Q), a self-report version of the Child Eating Disorder Examination (ChEDE), was designed to assess the spectrum of ED psychopathology in youth.
METHOD: The YEDE-Q was compared to the ChEDE and the Questionnaire for Eating and Weight Patterns-Adolescent version (QEWP-A) in a sample of 35 overweight adolescents aged 12-17.
RESULTS: The YEDE-Q showed significant agre

OBJECTIVE: This article examined possible ways of classifying eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS) using latent profile analysis (LPA).
METHOD: Of 687 patients being seen for an evaluation for an eating disorder, 284 were classified as having anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN). LPA was performed on the remaining 403 cases (EDNOS).
RESULTS: Five clusters were identified that characterized individuals who appeared to be: (1) subsyndromal restrictor AN patients that denied a great deal of eating disorder (ED) psychopathology; (2) subsyndromal ED patients, some but not all

Antisocial personality disorder (APD) is a serious public and mental health concern. Understanding how well conduct disorder (CD) and other mental disorders predict the development of APD among youths involved in the juvenile justice system is critical for prevention. The authors used a stratified random sample of 1,112 detained youths to examine the development of APD at a 3-year follow-up interview. Nearly one fifth of male juvenile detainees later developed APD; approximately one quarter of male juvenile detainees with CD at baseline later developed APD. Significantly more males than female

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated correlates of the diagnosis of ADHD in youth by informant source.
METHOD: Ninety-four pairs of mother reports and youth self-reports on ADHD were independently assessed, using diagnostic interviews from a large study of youth of both genders with and without ADHD. Comparisons were made on measures of interpersonal, school, and family functioning; treatment history; and parental psychopathology by informant source.
RESULTS: With the exception of higher rates of ADHD-associated impairment and higher frequency of treatment for ADHD in the combined youth-mother group. The

BACKGROUND: Conduct disorder is considered difficult to treat, but comorbid psychiatric disorders may be a basis for treating some youths with conduct disorder. We sought to identify patterns of comorbid psychiatric diagnoses and psychopathology associated with conduct disorder by reported age-of-onset.
METHODS: Referred children and adolescents, aged 4-17 years old, were clinically evaluated. Ages of onset of CD symptoms (N=53) were ascertained and divided according to DSM-IV criteria as childhood onset (<10 years old) or adolescent onset (>or=10 years old).
RESULTS: Childhood-onset conduct

This multicenter, uncontrolled, naturalistic study evaluated the effectiveness and tolerability of 6 months of treatment with ziprasidone in 1266 patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The percentage of responders (at least 30% reduction in PANSS total score) in the primary analysis sample (n=1022) was 47.3% (95% CI 44.2-50.4) at the end of the study. Patients showed a significant and clinically relevant reduction in the PANSS total, positive, negative and general psychopathology subscales scores (effect size of 1.60, 1.83, 0.62 and 1.40 respectively). Overall, 453 (35.8%) patients withdr

Relations between maternal depression and infant behavior, attachment and development were examined within a clinical diagnostic framework. The sample consisted of a study group of 15 infants and their mothers with depression compared to a group of 16 infants and their mothers with no diagnosable psychiatric disorders. The study group scored lower on expressive (p < .03), receptive (p < .05) and overall communication (p < .03) and coping skills (p < .03) of the Vineland and total scales (p < .05) of both developmental measures and higher on psychosocial stressor severity assessments (p < .01).

On the basis of the behavioral approach system (BAS) dysregulation theory of bipolar disorder, this study examined the relation between occurrence of a BAS activation-relevant life event--goal striving--and onset of hypomanic and depressive episodes and symptoms. In particular, the authors examined the relation between preparing for and completing final exams (a goal-striving event) and onset of bipolar spectrum episodes and symptoms in college students with bipolar II disorder or cyclothymia (i.e., "soft" bipolar spectrum conditions). One hundred fifty-nine individuals with either a bipolar s

The effect of life stress on depression is moderated by a repeat length variation in the transcriptional control region of the serotonin transporter gene, which renders carriers of the short variant vulnerable for depression. We investigated the underlying neural mechanisms of these epigenetic processes in individuals with no history of psychopathology by using multimodal magnetic resonance-based imaging (functional, perfusion, and structural), genotyping, and self-reported life stress and rumination. Based on functional MRI and perfusion data, we found support for a model by which life stress
