OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of imatinib mesylate (IM) for patients with newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and patients after failure of Recombinant Human interferon-α2b (IFN-α2b) therapy.
METHODS: A total of 86 patients with CML in chronic-phase, including 61 newly diagnosed cases and 25 cases of IFN-α2b failure, who received IM at 400 mg daily were retrospectively analyzed. Conventional cytogenetic analysis of R-banding was used to detect chromosome abnormalities and real-time PCR was used to detect BCR-ABL fusion gene.

Here, we present the case of a 60-year-old man in whom abdominal computed tomography showed a solid abdominal tumor (11 cm in diameter) in the pelvic space, with widely disseminated nodular lesions. Emergency surgery was performed following the rapid onset of intense abdominal pain. Peritoneal disseminations were widespread and the tumor was confirmed to be in the pelvic space. The tumor was not connected to any segment of the intestinal tract but rather to the retroperitoneum. We investigated the incidence of phototoxic skin reactions in pediatric BMT recipients treated with voriconazole. Nine out of 40 patients (22.5%), all Caucasian, developed skin lesions in sun-exposed distributions. Dermatologic findings included sunburn-like erythema, pseudo-porphyria, linear papulovesicular lesions, severe erosive cheilitis, dermatoheliosis and lentigines. Patients were treated with sun avoidance, high-potency sunscreens, and topical steroids with significant improvement in all cases. Susceptibilities to antifungal drugs of 1083 Candida isolates collected in Taiwan Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance of Yeasts in 2010 were determined.
