Excessive daytime sleepiness and its impact on quality of life in de novo Parkinson's disease.

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is one of the most common sleep problems in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD); however, its clinical implications are not clear, especially in early stage, non-medicated PD patients. This study investigated EDS in Korean patients with de novo PD and its impact on quality of life. This cross-sectional study was carried out with 198 PD patients who underwent a structured clinical interview and examination based on common and conventional scales. Motor and nonmotor symptoms were assessed by the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and Non-Motor

Outcomes and Quality of Life After Ross Reintervention: Would You Make the Same Choice Again?

BACKGROUND: The Ross procedure was introduced as a long-term if not definitive solution for aortic pathology. However, the rate of reoperation is not negligible. METHODS: This single-center prospective study assessed the general outcome of Ross reoperation and patients' perceived quality of life compared with 2 control groups (Ross non-reoperation and mechanical aortic valve replacement). Patient's preference regarding the choice between mechanical aortic valve and Ross procedure was investigated in a subgroup that could theoretically have been directed to either of the 2 procedures. RESULTS

Gastro-intestinal function and quality of life are favorable in adolescent and adult gastroschisis patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Studies on long-term sequelae of gastroschisis are scarce. The limited data suggest increased abdominal complaints in young children. To provide proper counseling for both parents and patients, more information on long-term outcome is needed. This study aims to evaluate long-term outcome regarding GI function, gastroesophageal reflux (GER), health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and cosmetic satisfaction. METHODS: An observational longitudinal cohort study was performed. All patients (N = 43) born between 1982 and 2008 with gastroschisis that were admitted to the Universi

Quality of life assessment in temporomandibular joint ankylosis patients after interpositional arthroplasty: a prospective study.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis significantly impacts both physical and psychosocial patient wellbeing. A complete evaluation of treatment outcomes necessitates knowing the extent to which a patient's quality of life (QoL) is impacted. This study was performed to evaluate the impact of TMJ ankylosis on QoL in 25 TMJ ankylosis patients treated by interpositional arthroplasty. The patients completed OHIP-14 and UWQoL questionnaires once before and then at 3 months after the surgery. There was a significant improvement in mean cumulative scores for both questionnaires. With the exception

Criteria for surgical reduction in high-grade lumbosacral spondylolisthesis based on quality of life measures.

PURPOSE: Although surgical reduction in high-grade lumbosacral spondylolisthesis is often performed in young patients, criteria for defining adequate reduction leading to optimal outcomes have yet to be defined. The purpose of this study is to determine if surgical reduction in pelvic balance, slip grade, lumbosacral angle and L5 incidence are associated with quality of life after surgery, based on specific criteria proposed previously in the literature. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 61 patients (14.4 ± 2.7 years) with high-grade lumbosacral spondylolisthesis was followed for a minimum of
