Real-time breast sonography: application in 300 consecutive patients.

Sonography, disappointing as a primary screening method, has emerged as the single most helpful adjunct to mammography in evaluation of the clinically and/or mammographically abnormal breast. Sonography can reliably diagnose simple cysts presenting as palpable masses or as indeterminate, nonpalpable lesions on mammography. However, differentiation of benign from malignant solid masses cannot be reliably accomplished by sonography. The expense of an automated breast sonographic scanner has deterred many radiologists from the purchase of such a unit. The authors have used both an automated breas

Clinical nuclear magnetic resonance imaging of the body.

NMR promises great advances in diagnosis and has delivered so much already that it is expected that in the future it will replace many applications of the currently used imaging modalities. Although x-ray computed tomography is continuing to advance in speed of scanning and resolving power, NMR will most likely soon eliminate its use in many studies of the central nervous system and also in many other areas of the body. The promise of combining topical spectroscopy with imaging is also exciting and should provide further information about metabolic processes of various organs. Progress in NMR

The dental practitioner's role in emergency health services.

In a national disaster, the medical profession would lose physicians and auxiliary personnel and would need assistance. Canada's 22,000 physicians and 85,000 nurses are located for the most part in potential target areas. Survivors among Canada's 6396 dentists could supply 30% reinforcement. The dentist's training, his manual dexterity and experience acquired in the management of hemorrhage, shock, débridement, suturing, reduction and immobilization of fractures, and control of pain and infection would be valuable. Additional functions he could perform would be first-aid, including but not lim

From whole-body dosimetry to local dose assessment: a 3-y experience in interventional practice.

This 3-y retrospective study analyzed 180 paired dosimetry records from five interventional radiologists and five cardiologists, comparing whole-body Hp(10) with eye-lens Hp(3) and extremity Hp(0.07) doses. Moderate-to-strong linear correlations were observed (r = 0.86-0.91, R2 = 0.73-0.83), indicating that chest-level dosemeters may support the estimation of localized exposure. Coefficients of variation were ~30% for k1 and 27% for k2, reflecting heterogeneous exposure conditions. Variance-component analysis showed that inter-operator variability accounted for 20%-25% of total variance, versu

Retroperitoneal hematoma secondary to rupture of uterine artery pseudoaneurysm after cesarean section, managed by selective embolization: A case report.

A 35-year-old woman underwent a cesarean section at our hospital. Five days postoperatively, she presented with abdominal pain, vomiting, and deterioration of her general condition. Laboratory tests revealed hypotension with a blood pressure of 90/70 mmHg and a hemoglobin level of 6 g/dL, without any signs of external bleeding. After initial stabilization, an ultrasound examination with Doppler followed by a CT scan was performed, demonstrating a retroperitoneal hematoma and a saccular vascular lesion of the uterine artery consistent with a pseudoaneurysm. The patient was successfully treated

Diagnostic algorithm for the imaging evaluation of a solid pancreatic mass: is it malignant?

Pancreatic masses comprise a broad spectrum of benign, inflammatory, premalignant, and malignant entities with markedly different prognoses and therapeutic implications. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains the most lethal solid pancreatic neoplasm, whereas inflammatory conditions such as autoimmune pancreatitis and mass-forming chronic pancreatitis may simulate malignancy on imaging, frequently leading to unnecessary surgical resections. Given the increasing detection of pancreatic lesions through widespread use of high-resolution cross-sectional imaging, radiologists play a centra

European society of paediatric radiology abdominal task force procedural recommendations for upper gastrointestinal contrast fluoroscopy studies in children.

Contrast fluoroscopy of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract has become less common in the last decades, mainly due to the development of endoscopy and cross-sectional imaging methods. However, it remains an important imaging technique offering real-time dynamic acquisitions of the upper GI tract with a high temporal and spatial resolution and the ability to adjust the position of the child appropriately, thus being valuable and irreplaceable for addressing specific clinical queries such as tracheoesophageal fistula, aspiration, strictures, oesophageal injuries, hernias, achalasia, post-opera

Micronuclei and sister chromatid exchange in lymphocytes from physicians exposed to ionizing radiation.

OBJECTIVE: Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation is a known risk factor for genomic instability. This study evaluated whether physicians occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation exhibit higher frequencies of chromosomal alterations compared to unexposed hospital workers, utilizing micronuclei and sister chromatid exchanges as biomarkers. METHODS: Peripheral blood samples were analyzed from 50 participants: 25 physicians exposed to ionizing radiation (radiologists) and a control group of 25 sex- and age-matched hospital staff with no history of occupational exposure. The cytokinesis-

A Chain-of-thought Reasoning Breast Ultrasound Dataset Covering All Histopathology Categories.

Breast ultrasound (BUS) is an essential tool for diagnosing breast lesions, with millions of examinations per year. However, publicly available high-quality BUS benchmarks for AI development are limited in data scale and annotation richness. In this work, we present BUS-CoT, a BUS dataset for chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning analysis, which contains 11,439 ultrasound images from 11,850 lesions and 4,838 patients, covering all 99 WHO-defined histopathology categories. For model training and evaluation, we provide a curated high-quality subset of 5,163 lesion-focused images annotated by experien

Canadian Society Breast Imaging Position Statement on Mammographic Breast Density and Supplemental Screening.

Screening aims to detect breast cancer before it becomes clinically apparent, enabling identification of tumors when they are smaller and have not yet spread and when treatment options are more effective, less invasive, and more affordable. However, screening mammography has known limitations, with breast density being a primary challenge. Denser breast tissue not only increases the likelihood of cancer but also makes tumors harder to detect due to overlapping tissue. Strong evidence now exists to support updating our previous guidelines to recommend supplemental screening beyond mammography f

MRI-based brain tumor prediction using convolutional neural network framework.

Deep learning technology enables the transformation of healthcare, focusing on the deployment of lightweight or hybrid diagnostic models for insufficiently resourced medical facilities. Early-stage brain tumor diagnosis supports doctors in developing better treatment strategies and enhancing prognosis results. In this work, we present a CNN-based model for automated brain tumor identification through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Our model achieved better generalization capability through pre-processed imaging that involved normalization followed by segmentation. Optimization was carried o

Impact of multidisciplinary team care in breast cancer treatment planning.

Globally, breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among women, with multidisciplinary team care emerging as the gold standard for its management. The multidisciplinary team care integrates expertise from diverse specialists, including oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and nurses, to develop individualised, evidence-based treatment plans. This collaborative approach improves diagnostic accuracy, enhances patient outcomes, and fosters holistic care by addressing both medical and psychosocial needs. Studies show that multidisciplinary team involvement leads to better survival rates,

Challenging creation of a hemodialysis arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in a patient with high division of the radial artery.

The radial artery (RA), a branch of the brachial artery, is frequently utilized in a variety of medical procedures: by cardiologists for cardiac catheterization, by nephrologists for arteriovenous fistula creation, by interventional radiologists, and by plastic surgeons for free flap reconstruction. Knowledge of RA anatomical variants is particularly important in patients with end-stage renal disease, as they often require fistula creation for hemodialysis. Failure to recognize such variants may lead to procedural complications. We describe the case of a 35-year-old man with diabetes whose pre

The immature sacroiliac joints on cross-sectional imaging: developmental anatomy and diagnostic pitfalls.

The immature sacroiliac joint (SIJ) has developmental imaging appearances that frequently simulate sacroiliitis in children and adolescents evaluated for juvenile spondyloarthritis, and false-positive interpretation increases when adult MRI and structural criteria are applied. This review integrates developmental anatomy with MRI and CT findings and discusses CT-like MRI and MRI-based synthetic CT as structural adjuncts for cortical assessment in the immature SIJ. We emphasize the most relevant false-positive pathways in daily practice, including peri-physeal fluid-sensitive marrow hyperintens

Collision Tumour of the Ovary: Mature Cystic Teratoma and Benign Mucinous Cystadenoma.

A collision tumour is defined as the coexistence of two or more histologically and pathogenetically distinct tumours without any histological intermixing in the same organ or tissue. This article reports a case of an ovarian collision tumour consisting of a mature cystic teratoma and a benign mucinous cystadenoma in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman. Ultrasound of the pelvis showed an enlarged right ovary with a 7.0 cm x 6.0 cm x 5.0 cm cyst. The tumour marker was normal. Macroscopic examination of the cyst revealed a dermoid cyst with some haemorrhagic areas. The histopathological examination

Giant parasitic leiomyoma: A rare cause of acute appendicitis and bowel injury.

Parasitic fibroids are an uncommon subtype of leiomyomas that can implant on peritoneal surfaces such as the omentum or bowel serosa and may mimic malignancy on imaging. While typically asymptomatic, they can occasionally present with acute abdominal complications. We describe the case of a 37-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain and a palpable mass. Imaging revealed a large, heterogeneously enhancing lesion with central necrosis, raising concern for malignancy. Surgical exploration identified a 17.5 × 15 cm parasitic leiomyoma adherent to the bowel and appendix, resulting in acute

Extreme Unilateral Styloid Process Elongation With Tortuous Morphology, Marked Anteromedial Angulation, and an Ipsilateral Pterygoalar Bar.

The styloid process (SP), a component of the stylohyoid complex (SHC), demonstrates considerable anatomic variability in length, angulation, ossification, and morphology. Although elongation has traditionally been regarded as the principal feature of Eagle syndrome, growing evidence suggests that 3-dimensional orientation may be equally important. We report a dry skull specimen demonstrating a markedly elongated unilateral SP with a tortuous shaft and pronounced anteromedial angulation. The osseous contour was continuous throughout its course, without evidence of fracture, segmentation, or pse
