Person-centred care advocates for co-design of all healthcare services and research interventions by the end-user. Co-design is widely used, but the methodological approaches, evaluation, and reporting of outcomes are often poorly defined. One methodology for co-design is the User Experience Design which provides guidance and theoretical frameworks to inform development and reporting measures. This article outlines the application of this approach in the development of a web-based cardiac rehabilitation program and reports on the very positive experiences of the patients involved in the proces

The previous paradigm that Barrett's is an irreversible premalignant lesion has recently been challenged by a proliferation of reports documenting elimination of Barrett's by a variety of endoscopic techniques. Whether Barrett's is entirely eliminated is unknown as endoscopic biopsy samples the surface of the epithelium only. Numerous reports document underlying specialised columnar epithelium in many of these trials. Until now there have been no reports of pathological examination of the entire oesophagus as a specimen. This case documents complete elimination of intestinal metaplasia from th

Rheumatologic features are among the most common extraintestinal manifestations of gastrointestinal disorders. They are an important cause of morbidity and continue to generate interest among researchers. Over the past year, reports have focused attention on inflammatory bowel disease and coeliac disease. Among the hepatic disorders, cryoglobulinemia, Sjögren's syndrome, and other immunological disorders have been reported in association with hepatitis C virus infections. Rheumatologic manifestations are well-documented in association with pancreatic disorders. There are also a number of inter

BACKGROUND: Health research in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs) is often driven by donor priorities rather than by the needs of the countries where the research takes place. This lack of alignment of donor's priorities with local research need may be one of the reasons why countries fail to achieve set goals for population health and nutrition. India has a high burden of morbidity and mortality in women, children and infants. In order to look forward toward the Sustainable Development Goals, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the INCLEN Trust International (INCLEN) empl

BACKGROUND: Report cards are a prominent strategy to increase the ability of citizens to express their view, improve public accountability, and foster community participation in the provision of health services in low-income and middle-income countries. In India, social accountability interventions that incorporate report cards and community meetings have been implemented at scale, attracting considerable policy attention, but there is little evidence on their effectiveness in improving health. We aimed to evaluate the effect of report cards, which contain information on village-level indicato

Thirty years ago in this journal, Aylett Royall Cox reported on the development of Alphabetic Phonics, a revision of the existing Orton Gillingham treatment for children with dyslexia. This paper continues that discussion and reports on the evolution of that curriculum as it is represented in a comprehensive dyslexia treatment program informed by intervention research. The paper describes the curriculum and reports data from a hospital-based learning disabilities clinic that provides qualified support for treatment efficacy and the value of added comprehension instruction. The results are then

The possible influences of intrafamilial conflict and emotional physical, and sexual abuse were examined in relation to academic achievement in college. 135 students of a small private university in a rural setting responded to a questionnaire. Reported histories of sexual abuse and physical abuse by family members wee associated with lower mean grade point averages. Individuals who reported occasional emotional abuse had a lower mean grade point average than those who reported frequent or no emotional abuse. Treatment implications and directions for research should be considered.

BACKGROUND: Clinical research routinely turns continuous processes into categorical outcomes. Someone must decide what will count as the event, and that rule is usually stated in the Methods. The sentence reporting the result often does not carry it, and it is that sentence which often travels into abstracts, tables, reviews and guidelines.
METHODS: A natural language processing pipeline analyzed 296 research articles reporting fracture union or nonunion from three major orthopaedic journals, classifying each on two axes: how the outcome was defined in the Methods, and how it was reported in

INTRODUCTION: Current reporting standards for guidelines include the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation Tool and the Reporting Items for Practice Guidelines in HealThcare Checklist. These recommend the minimum items that should be reported by clinical practice guideline developers. However, the reporting of guidelines that are developed between two or more organisations sharing responsibilities varies in quality and completeness regarding the documentation of the collaboration process. We aim to develop an extension document for the reporting of guidelines in which two or more

Esophageal motility disorders (EMD) can have significant effects on quality of life. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) provide valuable insight into the patient's perspective on their treatment and are becoming increasingly used in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Thus, our investigation aims to evaluate the completeness of reporting of PROs in RCTs pertaining to EMDs. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for published RCTs focused on EMDs. Included RCTs were published between 2006 and 2020, reported a primary outcome related to an EMDs, and listed

Sclerostin is most recognized for its role in controlling bone formation but is also expressed in the heart, aorta, coronary, and peripheral arteries. This review summarizes research on sclerostin's role in cardiovascular disease. Rodent studies have found sclerostin to be expressed at sites of arterial calcification. In contrast, aortic sclerostin was reported to be downregulated in a mouse model of abdominal aortic aneurysm, and transgenic upregulation or administration of sclerostin was found to prevent abdominal aortic aneurysm and atherosclerosis formation. Sclerostin deficiency was repor

OBJECTIVE: To identify what outcomes have been assessed in traumatic brachial plexus injury (TBPI) research to inform the development of a core outcome set for TBPI.
DESIGN: Systematic review.
METHOD: Medline (OVID), EMBASE, CINAHL and AMED were systematically searched for studies evaluating the clinical effectiveness of interventions in adult TBPIs from January 2013 to September 2018 updated in May 2021. Two authors independently screened papers. Outcome reporting bias was assessed. All outcomes were extracted verbatim from studies. Patient-reported outcomes or performance outcome measures

BACKGROUND: The leishmaniases are a group of four vector-borne neglected tropical diseases caused by 20 species of protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania and transmitted through a bite of infected female phlebotomine sandflies. Endemic in over 100 countries, the four types of leishmaniasis-visceral leishmaniasis (VL) (known as kala-azar), cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL), and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL)-put 1.6 billion people at risk. In Kenya, the extent of leishmaniasis research has not yet been systematically described. This knowledge is in

CONTEXT: As a result of new developments in medicine, the need for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPG) is of utmost importance. However, studies have shown that many medical societies are using low quality research to develop CPGs.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the quality of research underlying the CPGs issued by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).
METHODS: We examined 29 CPGs issued between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2019 and classified each by research quality according to levels reported by the CPG authors and previously specified by the IDSA: Levels I throug

Insomnia symptoms reported in sleep bruxism may partly reflect circadian misalignment rather than insomnia disorder per se, highlighting the need to integrate chronobiological assessment into both bruxism research and clinical practice.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the estimated prevalence and incidence of uterine fibroids diagnosed in Australian women of reproductive age?
SUMMARY ANSWER: An estimated 7.3% of Australian women had a diagnosis of uterine fibroids by the age of 45-49 years, with age-specific incidence highest in women aged 40-44 years (5.0 cases per 1000 person-years).
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Uterine fibroids are associated with a high symptom burden and may affect overall health and quality of life. Studies in different countries show a wide variation in both the prevalence (4.5-68%) and incidence (2.2-37.5 per 100

Until there is a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), it is imperative that everyone facing this devastating illness receives care to alleviate symptoms and suffering and improve quality of life. Emerging evidence has demonstrated benefits of palliative care for people with ALS, but palliative care is not yet widely available or accessed by people with ALS throughout the disease course. The Palliative Care for ALS Working Group was formed within the International Neuropalliative Care Society, consisting of interprofessional ALS and palliative care clinicians, researchers, advocates, a
