Simple EMG-driven musculoskeletal model enables consistent control performance during path tracing tasks.

Consistent, robust performance is critical for the utility and user-acceptance of neurally-controlled powered upper limb prostheses. We preliminarily evaluated the performance consistency of an electromyography (EMG)-driven controller based on a two degree-of-freedom musculoskeletal hand model, whose simplified structure is more practical for real-time prosthesis control than existing, complex models. Parameters of four virtual muscles were computed by numerical optimization from an able-bodied subject's kinematic and EMG data collected during wrist and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) flexion/extens

Subjective and Objective Measures of Hypersomnolence Demonstrate Divergent Associations with Depression among Participants in the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To examine associations of depression with habitual sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, and objective sleep propensity in a nonclinical population. METHODS: Data from adults participating in the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study were utilized in analyses. There were 1,287 adults (3,324 observations) who were used in the analysis of subjective hypersomnolence measures; 1,155 adults (2,981 observations) were used in the analysis of objective sleep propensity assessed by the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT). Repeated-measures logistic regression estimated associations between pres

A new model of detrusor overactivity in conscious rats induced by retinyl acetate instillation.

INTRODUCTION: A credible animal overactive bladder model used in basic research is an indispensable harbinger of safe and ethical clinical trials on human subjects. Our objective was to develop a new animal model of a hyperactive bladder that will be void of inflammatory urothelium lesions and display significant sensitivity to muscarinic receptor antagonists. METHODS: To examine the influence of 0.75% retinyl acetate solution on cystometric parameters, it was infused into the bladder for 5min. Cystometric studies with physiological saline were performed in conscious unrestrained rats 3days l

The D2/3 dopamine receptor in pathological gambling: a positron emission tomography study with [11C]-(+)-propyl-hexahydro-naphtho-oxazin and [11C]raclopride.

AIMS: Pathological gambling (PG) shares diagnostic features with substance use disorder (SUD), but the neurochemical mechanisms underlying PG are poorly understood. Because dopamine (DA), a neurotransmitter implicated in reward and reinforcement, is probably involved, we used positron emission tomography (PET) to test whether PG is associated with abnormalities in D2 and D3 receptor levels, as observed in SUD. DESIGN: Case-control study comparing PG to healthy control (HC) subjects. SETTING: Academic research imaging centre. PARTICIPANTS: Thirteen non-treatment-seeking males meeting DSM-IV

Association of age and comorbidity with physical function in HIV-infected and uninfected patients: results from the Veterans Aging Cohort Study.

HIV clinical care now involves prevention and treatment of age-associated comorbidity. Although physical function is an established correlate to comorbidity in older adults without HIV infection, its role in aging of HIV-infected adults is not well understood. To investigate this question we conducted cross-sectional analyses including linear regression models of physical function in 3227 HIV-infected and 3240 uninfected patients enrolled 2002-2006 in the Veterans Aging Cohort Study-8-site (VACS-8). Baseline self-reported physical function correlated with the Short Form-12 physical subscale (ρ

Shared and idiosyncratic cortical activation patterns in autism revealed under continuous real-life viewing conditions.

Although widespread alterations in cortical structure have been documented in individuals with autism, the functional implications of these alterations remain to be determined. Here, we adopted a novel inter-subject correlation (inter-SC) and intra-subject correlation (intra-SC) technique to quantify the reliability of the spatio-temporal responses of functional MR activity in adults with autism during free-viewing of a popular audio-visual movie. Whereas these complex stimuli evoke highly reliable shared response time courses in typical individuals, cortical activity was more variable across

Research hotspots and trends in post-stroke dysphagia: a bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia represents one of the common complications following a stroke, and post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) can lead to aspiration, pneumonia, and malnutrition, thus prolonging hospital stay, escalating medical expenditures, and imposing a substantial economic strain on both patients and society. The utilization of bibliometric analysis offers a quantitative approach for investigating the existing literature and recognizes the current status of the research. However, bibliometric analysis on the subject of PSD remains absent. Consequently, we carried out this study to provide research

A bibliometric analysis of preprints in traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine research.

BACKGROUND: Traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine (TCIM) encompasses a wide range of healthcare practices and is of growing global interest. Preprints, scientific manuscripts posted prior to formal peer review, offer opportunities to address challenges in TCIM research, including limited funding, publication delays, and concerns about methodological quality. By increasing the visibility and speed of research dissemination, preprints may help strengthen the TCIM evidence base. This bibliometric analysis examined the characteristics of TCIM-related preprints posted on servers with

Global research status analysis of the association between aortic aneurysm and inflammation: a bibliometric analysis from 1999 to 2023.

BACKGROUND: Aortic aneurysm is a chronic arterial disease that can lead to aortic rupture, causing severe complications and life-threatening risks for patients, and it is one of the common causes of death among the elderly. Increasing evidence suggests that inflammation plays an important role in the progression of aortic aneurysm. However, there is a lack of literature-based quantitative analysis in this field. METHODS: Up to March 30, 2023, we collected 3,993 articles related to aortic aneurysm and inflammation from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database for bibliometric analys

Service users' and carers' views on research towards stratified medicine in psychiatry: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 30% of people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia receive little to no benefit from current medications. There is therefore an urgent need to develop more precisely targeted and effective treatments. Identifying biomarkers to predict response to treatment and stratify patients into groups may be a way forward. However, we know little about service users' and carers' attitudes regarding such a 'stratified medicine' approach for psychiatry-nor how this might impact on their willingness to participate in stratified medicine research. This paper presents psychiatric service

Alcohol Use Disorder: Natural History, Definitions, and Stigma.

Liver clinicians commonly encounter patients exhibiting hazardous patterns of alcohol use, including alcohol use disorder (AUD). Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) consists of severe psychosocial and biomedical hazards that necessitate clinicians' broad understanding of the natural history of this multifaceted chronic and relapsing condition. AUD involves myriad behavioral phenomena and data whose interpretation can be more subjective than biomedical data, thus requiring particular clarity in clinical terminology. ALD triggers strong emotional and moralistic reactions in clinicians, which

[Acne and mycoses : between non-drug treatments and resistance].

This article focuses on recent developments regarding acne and fungal infections. Primary care physicians are in a unique position to screen for these disorders during consultations. Non-pharmacological approaches (such as diet and physical treatments) are the subject of ongoing scientific research and are of interest to patients but have not yet been incorporated into guidelines due to a lack of robust evidence. Recent studies highlight the psychological impact of acne, with a high prevalence of anxiety and depression among affected individuals. Regarding fungal infections, the recent emergen

Neuroanatomical and functional correlates in post-traumatic stress disorder: A narrative review.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), currently included by the Diagnostic and Statistical of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision in the macro-category "disorders related to traumatic and stressful events", is a severe mental distress that arises acutely as a result of direct or indirect exposure to severely stressful and traumatic events. A large body of literature is available on the psychological and behavioral manifestations of PTSD; however, with regard to the more purely neuropsychological aspects of the disorder, they are still the subject of research and need greater clarit

Influence of COVID-19 over seasonal influenza activity in southern India.

Basic epidemiological data is urgently needed in order to ascertain the changes brought about by COVID-19 pandemic, and help researchers, clinicians, and policy makers in addressing these issues. Data on influenza positivity from 2009 to 2019 was collected from Regional Influenza laboratory, JIPMER. Being COVID testing centre we tested samples (2020-2023) from Tamilnadu and Pondicherry. All SARI samples which were negative for COVID-19 were subjected to Influenza testing as regular surveillance activity was suspended. On comparison we found significant reduction in detection rates of influenza

[Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas: a complication of severe forms of hereditary epidermolysis bullosa].

Despite an increase in life expectancy and quality of life for patients suffering from severe forms of hereditary epidermolysis bullosa, the occurrence of one or more cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas remains a sometimes serious complication, sometimes life-threatening as early as adolescence. These carcinomas occur preferably on chronic wounds or dystrophic scars in areas not exposed to the sun, and are generally multifocal and recurrent. Their clinical and histological diagnosis is difficult. Regular medical and paramedical monitoring of the skin during dressing repairs enables early detect

Retrograde "Sandwich" Technique and Implantation of Minced Cartilage in a Hyaluronic Acid Scaffold for Deep Osteochondral Knee Lesions.

The management of deep osteochondral lesions is a subject of great controversy. Despite multiple studies and research efforts, it has not been possible to establish an ideal technique for their treatment. The main goal of all available treatments is to avoid the progress toward early osteoarthritis. Hence, this article will present a one-step technique for the handling of osteochondral lesions with a depth equal to or greater than 5 mm, with retrograde subchondral bone grafting to reconstruct the subchondral bone, seeking the greatest possible preservation of the subchondral plate, and implant

Remaining Question: Does Exercise Improve Healing of Diabetic Foot Ulcers?

Even though it is reasonable to think that exercise is beneficial to diabetic foot ulcer healing, there are currently no exercise recommendations for this population. A systematic review published recently attempted to answer this question. However, because of both the scarce and heterogenous literature on the subject identified by the selected study design and the chosen quality appraisal tool that is too permissive and overestimates the treatment effects, no clinical recommendations can be drawn from this review. We advocate for research on this topic in order to obtain more direct evidence

Occurrence of dactylogyrid and gyrodactylid Monogenea on common carp, Cyprinus carpio, in the Southern Caspian Sea Basin.

In this study, we genetically characterised Monogenea found on common carp in Iran. In total, 5603 parasites were recovered from 112 fish. The parasites were first identified morphologically as Dactylogyrus extensus, D. anchoratus, D. vastator, D. minutus, D. achmerowi and Gyrodactylus sprostonae. Representative samples were then subjected to sequencing. This is one of the first studies which has provided both morphological and sequence data for Dactylogyrus spp. and G. sprostonae. Our findings provide a foundation for future research into the genetic make-up of these economically significant
