Comparison of unilateral arytenoid lateralization and ventral ventriculocordectomy for the treatment of experimentally induced laryngeal paralysis in dogs.

This study evaluated changes in respiratory function in dogs with experimentally induced laryngeal paralysis treated with either unilateral arytenoid lateralization or ventral ventriculocordectomy, and compared the effectiveness of these procedures. Evaluation consisted of clinical assessment and tidal breathing flow volume loop and upper airway resistance measurements. Carbon dioxide and doxapram hydrochloride were used as respiratory stimulants. Initially, all dogs improved clinically after corrective surgery. However, by the end of the study, laryngeal collapse had developed in 2 of 5 dogs

Respiratory function after esophageal replacement in children.

BACKGROUND: Children born with esophageal atresia require an anastomosis between the proximal and distal esophagus. When this distance is too wide (long gap esophageal atresia, LGEA) esophageal replacement strategies have to be deployed. The aim of this study was to assess long-term respiratory morbidity and lung function after esophageal replacement with either stomach (gastric pull-up, GPU) or jejunum (jejunal interposition, JI) for LGEA. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study. Patients operated with GPU and JI for LGEA (1985-2007) underwent a semi-structured interview and lung function testin

Vascular rings and slings: long-term follow-up of pulmonary function.

Between 1968 and 1983, 54 patients underwent surgery for symptomatic aortic arch and pulmonary artery anomalies at St Christopher's Hospital for Children. Presenting symptoms included stridor, wheeze, apnea, recurrent pulmonary infections, or dysphagia. Diagnosis was established with chest roentgenogram, bronchoscopy, barium esophagram, and arteriography. Four types of vascular anomalies were encountered; double aortic arch (24 patients), right aortic arch with left ligamentum arteriosum (17 patients), anomalous innominate artery (10 patients), and pulmonary artery sling (three patients). Distinct age-dependent phenotypes of abnormal liver function tests derived from national Emergency Department data.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal liver function tests (LFTs) are frequently performed in Emergency Departments (EDs); however, the systematic characterization of age-dependent clinical phenotypes and pathogen associations remains limited. PURPOSE: Here we aimed to identify the distinct clinical presentations and pathogen-specific associations of pediatric and adult ED visits for abnormal LFTs. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed 26,874 ED visits for abnormal LFTs in South Korea's National Emergency Department Information System (2019-2023). Patients were stratified into pediatric (0-18 yea

Association of Autonomic Dysfunction With Long COVID: Evaluation Using Quantitative Autonomic Testing.

BACKGROUND: Persistent symptoms (eg, heart palpitations, lightheadedness, fatigue) despite resolution of acute COVID-19 infection is termed "long COVID syndrome" or simply "long COVID." Long COVID is believed to be associated with autonomic dysfunction, but the nature and severity of any autonomic disturbances are not well understood. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to compare autonomic function measures in patients with long COVID, control subjects, and individuals with pure autonomic failure. METHODS: Patients referred for autonomic testing were classified into 3 groups: long COVID (acute CO

Use of Lung Ultrasound in Cystic Fibrosis: Is It a Valuable Tool?

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multisystem disorder characterized by progressive respiratory deterioration, significantly impacting both quality of life and survival. Over the years, lung ultrasound (LUS) has emerged as a promising tool in pediatric respiratory due to its safety profile and ease at the bedside. In the era of highly effective CF modulator therapies and improved life expectancy, the use of non-ionizing radiation techniques could become an integral part of CF management, particularly in the pediatric population. The present review explores the potential role of LUS in CF management ba

Blowing bubbles: an aquatic adaptation that risks protection of the respiratory tract in humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae).

Cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) have developed extensive protective barriers to exclude water or food from the respiratory tract, including valvular nostrils, an intranarial elongated larynx, and a sphincteric soft palate. A barrier breach can be lethal, as asphyxiation may occur from incursions of water (drowning) or food (choking). Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), however, exhibit a possibly unique and paradoxical behavior concerning respiratory protection: they release a "bubble cloud" (a cluster of tiny bubbles) underwater from the mouth. How they do this remains uncle

Asthmatic versus non-asthmatic spontaneous pneumomediastinum in children.

The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical spectrum and seek potential curable causes of spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) in children in order to minimize respiratory morbidity. Medical records from 1986 to 2003 were retrospectively reviewed at a tertiary pediatric facility in northern Taiwan. Sixteen cases of SPM were identified. There were eleven boys and five girls (M:F = 2.2:1) and ages ranged from 2 to 17 years (average, 10 years). Cough (81%), dyspnea (75%) and chest pain (56%) were the predominant symptoms and expiratory wheezing (63%) and neck crepitus (50%) were the most com

Anaesthetic implications of nemaline rod myopathy.

Nemaline rod myopathy is an inherited congenital myopathy first described in 1963. Affected patients characteristically present in infancy with a non-progressive hypotonia and symmetrical muscle weakness. The disease affects all skeletal muscles including the diaphragm with sparing of cardiac and other muscle. Facial dysmorphism is common as are skeletal deformities, including kyphosis, scoliosis and pectus excavatum. We present two sisters with nemaline rod myopathy and their anaesthetic management for scoliosis surgery. Facial dysmorphism was a feature of both cases. Preoperatively, both pat

Bronchiectasis Assessment in Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia: A Non-Invasive Approach Using Forced Oscillation Technique.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an autosomal recessive disorder that results from the dysfunction of motile cilia, which can cause chronic upper and lower respiratory infections leading to bronchiectasis. However, there is a need for additional tools to monitor the progression of bronchiectasis in PCD. The forced oscillation technique (FOT) is an effort-independent lung function test that can be used to evaluate respiratory mechanics. In this retrospective study, we aimed to describe the radiographic findings associated with respiratory impedance (resistance (Rrs) and reactance (Xrs)) meas

[Respiratory complications after oesophagectomy for cancer].

Surgery is the cornerstone of treatment for resectable tumours of the oesophagus. Recent advances of surgical techniques and anaesthesiology have led to a substantial decrease in mortality and morbidity. Respiratory complications affect about 30% of patients after oesophagectomy and 80% of these complications occur within the first five days. Respiratory complications include sputum retention, pneumonia and ARDS. They are the major cause of morbidity and mortality after oesophageal resection and numerous studies have identified the factors associated with these complications. The mechanisms ar

Acute intermittent hypercapnic-hypoxia elicits central neural respiratory motor plasticity in humans.

Acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) elicits long-term facilitation (LTF) of respiration. Although LTF is observed when CO2 is elevated during AIH in awake humans, the influence of CO2 on corticospinal respiratory motor plasticity is unknown. Thus, we tested the hypotheses that acute intermittent hypercapnic-hypoxia (AIHH): (1) enhances cortico-phrenic neurotransmission (reflecting volitional respiratory control); and (2) elicits ventilatory LTF (reflecting automatic respiratory control). Eighteen healthy adults completed four study visits. Day 1 consisted of anthropometry and pulmonary function t

Influences of Airway Obstruction Caused by Adenoid Hypertrophy on Growth and Development of Craniomaxillofacial Structure and Respiratory Function in Children.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Adenoid hypertrophy (AH) is a common disease in otorhinolaryngology. Children with chronic snoring and hypoxia are susceptible to long-term nasal obstruction, while long-term open-mouth breathing may cause craniofacial bone development disorders and dull facial expressions, the so-called adenoid face. The purpose of this work is to analyze the influence of AH-induced airway obstruction (AO) on the growth and development of craniomaxillofacial structure and respiratory function (RF) in children. The clinical data of 56 AH children (observation group) and 42 healthy children with physical examin
