Risk factors for wound dehiscence following radical cystectomy: a prediction model.

OBJECTIVES: Radical cystectomy (RC) is a complex urologic procedure performed for the treatment of bladder cancer and causes significant morbidity. Wound dehiscence (WD) is a major complication associated with RC and is associated with multiple risk factors. The objectives of this study are to identify clinical risk factors for incidence of WD and develop a risk-prediction model to aid in patient risk-stratification and improvement of perioperative care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The American College of Surgeons - National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) database was used to der

Assessment of gynecological and lifestyle-related risk factors of ovarian cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian cancer remains the most lethal gynecological cancer. Assessment of gynecological and lifestyle-related risk factors is essential to reduce the occurrence and the mortality rate of the disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Surveys were collected among 71 patients with ovarian cancer and 76 women without gynecological cancer. Questionnaires included questions about medical history and lifestyle in the past. RESULTS: The control group had breastfed longer (p = 0.034) and used hormonal contraception more often (p = 0.00037) than the study group. The patients in FIGO (French. Fédér

Risk factors for perioperative hypothermia and infectious outcomes in gastroschisis patients.

INTRODUCTION: Prior data suggest that infants with gastroschisis are at high risk for hypothermia and infectious complications (ICs). This study evaluated the associations between perioperative hypothermia (PH) and ICs in gastroschisis using a multi-institutional cohort. METHODS: Retrospective review of infants with gastroschisis who underwent abdominal closure from 2013-2017 was performed at 7 children's hospitals. Any-IC and surgical site infection (SSI) were stratified against the presence or absence of PH, and perioperative characteristics associated with PH and SSI were determined using

Risk factors for preoperative carcinogenesis of bile duct cysts in adults.

BACKGROUND: Bile duct cyst (BDC) is a rare congenital bile duct malformation. The incidence of bile duct malignancy in BDC patients is markedly higher than that in the general population. However, few studies have been conducted on the risk factors for preoperative carcinogenesis in BDC patients. AIM: To analyze the risk factors associated with preoperative carcinogenesis in BDC patients. METHODS: The medical records of BDC patients treated at our hospital between January 2012 and December 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. We constructed a database and compared the characteristics of BDC p

Effects of neurodevelopmental risk factors on brainstem maturation in premature infants.

BACKGROUND: Interpeak latencies (IPL), as measured by the auditory brainstem-evoked responses (ABR) test, represent the conduction time, and therefore the maturation of the brainstem auditory pathway. We aimed to study the effect of various risk factors for the neurodevelopmental delay on the conduction time in the auditory pathway among normal hearing premature infants, at term postmenstrual age (PMA). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 239 premature infants (gestational age 32.5 ± 2.1 weeks, birth weight 1827 ± 483 g). Interpeak latencies, demographic data, and risk factors were recorded.

Current Epidemiology and Risk Factors for the Development of Hand Osteoarthritis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hand osteoarthritis (hand OA), the most common peripheral arthritis in the world, is less studied than osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee and hip. However, it is uniquely situated to offer novel insight into OA as a disease process by removing weight-bearing as a confounder of systemic disease mechanisms. Here we review the epidemiology of hand OA and key risk factors for its development. RECENT FINDINGS: Mounting evidence points to obesity as an important risk factor for hand OA development, with new evidence implicating a role for leptin and serum fatty acids. Disease progre

Dental Screening in Elective Total Joint Arthroplasty: Risk Factors for Failure.

BACKGROUND: Active dental infection at the time of total joint arthroplasty (TJA) or in the acute postoperative period following TJA is thought to increase the risk of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Many surgeons recommend preoperative dental screening. This study aimed to identify how many elective TJA patients failed preoperative dental screening and what patient risk factors were associated with failure. METHODS: A consecutive series of elective, primary TJA was reviewed from 8/1/2016 to 8/1/2017. We studied 511 operations in 511 patients. All patients were referred for preoperative

Risk factors for monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance: a systematic review.

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), precursor of multiple myeloma, is an asymptomatic plasma cell disorder that overproduces serum monoclonal protein. Older age, male sex, black race, and family history of MGUS increase the risk of MGUS, yet other risk factors are known. We systematically reviewed observational epidemiological studies that examined sociodemographic, clinical, and behavioral risk factors for the development of MGUS. The protocol for this study was registered on the PROSPERO registry for systematic reviews. We identified epidemiological studies from PubMed
