UNLABELLED: Production of the amyloidogenic prion protein, PrPSc, which forms infectious protein aggregates, or prions, is a key pathogenic event in prion diseases. Functional prion-like protein aggregations, such as the mitochondrial adaptor protein MAVS and the inflammasome component protein ASC, have been identified to play a protective role in viral infections in mammalian cells. In this study, to investigate if PrPSc could play a functional role against external stimuli, we infected prion-infected cells with a neurotropic influenza A virus strain, IAV/WSN. We found that prion-infected cel

Psoriasis continues to affect a large percentage of patients worldwide and strongly appears to be a systematic disease. Efforts are being made to understand its etiology, which have led to research extended to genomic analysis with a focus on the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which play a major role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Plasma proteomic analysis in various diseases has provided promising results for choosing the right treatment for psoriasis, suggesting that it could play a key role in the prevention, prognosis, and treatment of the disease by individualizing treatment cho

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is characterized by a rapid decline in renal function and is associated with a high morbidity and mortality rate. At present, the underlying mechanisms of AKI remain incompletely understood. Immune disorder is a prominent feature of AKI, and dendritic cells (DCs) play a pivotal role in orchestrating both innate and adaptive immune responses, including the induction of protective proinflammatory and tolerogenic immune reactions. Emerging evidence suggests that DCs play a critical role in the initiation and development of AKI. This paper aimed to conduct a comprehensive

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a most common neurodegenerative disease. The mechanisms underlying AD, especially late-onset AD, remain elusive. In the past few years, results from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and systems approaches indicated that innate immune responses mediated by microglia played critical roles in AD. Functional analysis on animal models also showed that immune receptors or proteins expressed in microglia mediated Abeta-induced inflammation, or Abeta phagocytosis by microglia. Microglia plays double sword roles in AD. More work is warranted to elucidate the exact role

The role of angiogenesis in tumors appears obvious: without vessels, tumors cannot grow. However, the long-held belief that all human solid tumors are angiogenesis-dependent has been challenged by the universally disappointing results of anti-angiogenesis therapy in cancer. This may be explained by the fact that cooption of preexisting vasculature as a primary or secondary mechanism of tumor vascularization is more important than previously thought. Nevertheless, anti-angiogenesis therapy may play an important (adjuvant) role in the prevention of metastases of intraocular tumors (uveal melanom

This study assessed age and sex differences in the prevalence and incidence rates of syndromal social anxiety (SSA), as well as the predictive role of depressive symptoms and stressful life events on the development and persistence of SSA. A sample of 1,439 young people, between 11 and 14 years of age, was assessed twice within a 12-month interval. No age differences were found. Girls had a significantly higher prevalence of SSA than boys, but there was no sex difference for incidence rate. Depressive symptoms did not play a significant role in either the development or the persistence of SSA,

The role of respiratory viral infection in the development of asthma remains unclear. A number of factors play crucial roles, including the type of virus, the severity of the disease, the time of the infection, and, most important, the host predisposition. On the other hand, there is little doubt that a strong association exists between viral respiratory infections and induction of wheezing illnesses and asthma exacerbations. The underlying mechanisms, although not fully clarified, are likely to be multifactorial, involving inflammation of the bronchial mucosa, which interacts under certain ci

Systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjögren syndrome remain elusive in the description of their underlying etiologic causes and pathogenic mechanisms. Although underlying genetic predisposition appears to contribute to both diseases based on twin and other genetic studies, additional factors must play a role. Over the decades additional factors, such as hormonal influence, UV light, environmental exposures (e.g., silica, solvents), and infectious agents have been postulated to play a role. Over the past few years additional information has been published concerning roles of various infectious age

Dopamine is a hormone that is released by the adrenal gland and influences motor control and motivation. Dopamine is known to have 5 receptors which are D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5, which are further categorized into 2 families: D1 family and D2 family. The D1 family is known to play a role in motivation and motor control whereas the D2 family is known to affect attention and sleep. THC, a type of cannabinoid, can lead to feelings of euphoria, anxiety, fear, distrust, or panic. THC is known to affect dopamine in regions such as the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and plays a role in fundamental cog

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This study aims to review the effects of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in regulating the myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI).
RECENT FINDINGS: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a well-known leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Cardiac substrate metabolism plays the determinant role in assessing the severity of heart injury due to the abruptly shifted energy production during the MIRI. Fatty acids are the main energy fuels for the heart, which are classified into long-, medium- and short chain fatty acids by the length of carbon chain. SCFAs are the mai

Glucose homeostasis is achieved via complex interactions between the endocrine pancreas and other peripheral tissues and glucoregulatory neurocircuits in the brain that remain incompletely defined. Within the brain, neurons in the hypothalamus appear to play a particularly important role. Consistent with this notion, we report evidence that (pro)renin receptor (PRR) signaling within a subset of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) neurons located in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVNTH neurons) is a physiological determinant of the defended blood glucose level. Specifically, we demonstrate tha

The prevalence of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) increases year by year with the increase in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM), which is one of the most serious cardiovascular complications of DM and a major cause of death in diabetic patients. Although the pathological molecular features of DCM have not been fully elucidated, increasing evidence suggests that impaired autophagy in cardiomyocytes plays a nonnegligible role in the development of DCM. It has been shown that SUMOylation [SUMO = small ubiquitin-like modifier], a post-translational modification of proteins, and its associated

People living with HIV (PLWH) have an elevated risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and are at a higher risk of asthma and worse outcomes. Even though the combination of antiretroviral therapy (cART) has significantly improved the life expectancy of HIV-infected patients, it still shows a higher incidence of COPD in patients as young as 40 years old. Circadian rhythms are endogenous 24 h oscillations that regulate physiological processes, including immune responses. Additionally, they play a significant role in health and diseases by regulating viral replication and its corresp

Periprocedural cerebral microembolization is the most important complication of carotid artery stenting. Among several variables that play a role to reduce this risk, brain protection (proximal vs. distal) plays a pivot role. Data are accumulating in favor of a better performance of proximal vs. distal especially in symptomatic patients and high-risk carotid plaques. A prerequisite for the technique to be safe and effective is the presence of a valid intracranial collateral circulation to compensate for the target vessel hemisphere avoiding patient intolerance. This complication may occur eith

Nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen (O2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are gaseous molecules that play important roles in the physiology and pathophysiology of eukaryotes. Tissue concentrations of these physiologically relevant gases vary remarkable from nM range for NO to high μM range of O2. Various hemoproteins play a significant role in sensing and transducing cellular signals encoded by gaseous molecules or in transporting them. Soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) is a hemoprotein that plays vital roles in a wide range of physiological functions and combines the functions of gaseous sens

Cellular transformation to malignancy is a multifactorial process strongly linked with microbiome dysbiosis. The female reproductive tract (FRT) is inhabited by specific Lactobacillus spp which play a significant role in maintaining a homeostatic balance and providing resistance to perturbation. Any imbalance in the resident microbiota of the FRT results in cervicovaginal dysbiosis and increased predisposition to viral and bacterial infections. In the present review, we discuss the critical role played by the cervicovaginal microbiome in maintaining cervicovaginal homeostasis. Loss of the mutu

Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a central role in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Increased reactive oxygen species production, impaired electron transport chain activity, aberrant mitochondrial dynamics, Ca2+ overload, and opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore have been proposed as major contributory factors to mitochondrial dysfunction during myocardial I/R injury. Cardiolipin (CL), a mitochondria-specific phospholipid, plays a pivotal role in multiple mitochondrial bioenergetic processes, including respiration and energy conversion, in mitochondrial morphol

The objective of this study was to demonstrate the correlation between endodontic treatment on maxillary teeth and fungus ball with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurement of zinc and other metals (barium, lead and copper) in fungus ball samples. Samples of normal maxillary mucosa were used as comparison. Metal concentration was also measured in several endodontic materials. A significant difference was found between the concentration of zinc and copper in fungus ball compared to normal mucosa. Metal distribution was more similar in fungus ball and in the endodontic materials

The classical regard of lipid droplets as mere static energy-storage organelles has evolved dramatically. Nowadays these organelles are known to participate in key processes of cell homeostasis, and their abnormal regulation is linked to several disorders including metabolic diseases (diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis or hepatic steatosis), inflammatory responses in leukocytes, cancer development and neurodegenerative diseases. Hence, the importance of unraveling the cell mechanisms controlling lipid droplet biosynthesis, homeostasis and degradation seems evident Phospholipase A2s, a family o
