Anterior crucial ligament rupture: self-healing through dynamic intraligamentary stabilization technique.

PURPOSE: Surgery involving arthroscopic reconstruction of the injured ligament is the gold standard treatment for torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Recent studies support the hypothesis of biological self-healing of ruptured ACL. The aim of the study is to evaluate, in an animal model, the efficacy of a new technique, dynamic intraligamentary stabilization that utilizes biological self-healing for repair of acute ACL ruptures. METHODS: The ACL in 11 adult female white alpine sheep was transected and in 8 sheep reconstructed by dynamic intraligamentary stabilization. To enhance the healin

Functional rehabilitation interventions for chronic ankle instability: a systematic review.

CONTEXT: Functional rehabilitation is often employed for ankle instability, but there is little evidence to support its efficacy, especially in those with chronic ankle instability (CAI). OBJECTIVE: To review studies using both functional rehabilitation interventions and functional measurements to establish the effectiveness of functional rehabilitation for both postural control and self-reported outcomes in those with CAI. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The databases of Medline, SPORTDiscus, and PubMed were searched between the years 1988 and 2008. Inclusion criteria required articles to have used a

Quetiapine for the treatment of cocaine dependence: an open-label trial.

The monaminergic properties of second generation antipsychotics are prompting research on their use to treat cocaine dependence, with inconclusive results to date. In preliminary reports, the atypical antipsychotic quetiapine has shown promise for the treatment of substance abuse disorders. The primary objective of the current study was to assess the efficacy of quetiapine in reducing cocaine cravings and use in nonpsychotic subjects with cocaine dependence over 6 weeks of open-label treatment. Twenty-two cocaine-dependent, nonpsychotic men were initiated to open-label treatment with quetiapin

Coarctoplasty with self-expandable stent implantation for treatment of coarctation of aorta in adults.

BACKGROUND: Balloon angioplasty for treatment of coarctation of the aorta in adults, though promising, is sometimes limited by significant residual gradient (> 20 mmHg). Few studies have been reported on use of balloon-expandable stents in such a situation. We evaluated the use of self-expandable stents in patients with coarctation of the aorta. METHODS: Eight hypertensive patients (age 15 to 27 years) with coarctation of the aorta (n = 6) or recoarctation (n = 2) and peak systolic gradient of > 40 mmHg underwent stent implantation. Balloon predilatation was done and self-expandable nitinol a

Evaluation of a counseling method for the prevention of child exposure to tobacco smoke: an example of client-centered communication.

BACKGROUND: Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is an important risk factor. The aim of this study is to evaluate effects of the counseling method "Smoke-free children" that focuses on protection of infants. METHODS: The counseling method, "Smoke-free children", has been developed and implemented at Swedish child health centers. The counseling method's point of departure is based upon a client-centered approach. Saliva cotinine samples from the mothers were collected when the child was 1-4 weeks and 3 months of age. Interviews regarding mothers' smoking habits and self-reported maternal smoking

Relationship of sexual and physical abuse to pain description, coping, psychological distress, and health-care utilization in a chronic pain sample.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the association of physical/sexual abuse to pain description, coping, psychological distress, and health-care utilization in a heterogeneous sample of chronic pain patients. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, retrospective design was used. Patients were categorized as abused (n = 22) or nonabused (n = 58) based on responses to a valid and reliable sexual/physical abuse questionnaire. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pain description (Visual Analog Scale measures of pain intensity and frequency, and the McGill Pain Questionnaire); coping ability and attributional style (Functional In

Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery for Retrieval of an Intrathoracic Knife.

Deliberate foreign body ingestion (DFBI) is a psychopathologic disorder that involves the ingestion of nonnutritive objects to cause self-harm. Depending on the object, the subsequent injuries can be life-threatening if not managed promptly. Whereas the use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for the treatment of various lung diseases is well established, the efficacy for retrieval of intrathoracic foreign bodies is unclear and available literature is limited. We report the case of a patient who underwent a VATS for retrieval of an intrathoracic knife after ingestion. This report di

Varicella-Zoster Virus Myocarditis: Early Clinical Diagnosis and Outcome.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is a viral infection that causes chickenpox and shingles. Although it is usually self-limiting, it can lead to severe complications, especially in pediatric and immunocompromised patients. VZV was first discovered as a cause of myocarditis in 1953. In this review article, we aim to investigate the early clinical diagnosis of myocarditis in VZV infections and the efficacy of the VZV vaccine in preventing myocarditis. The literature search was done using PubMed, Google Scholar, and Sci-Hub databases. A high VZV mortality rate was noted among adults, infants, and immu

Enhancing measures of ESE to incorporate aspects of place: Personal reputation and place-based social legitimacy.

We argue that existing measures of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) are underspecified in the context of tight-knit communities, where personal reputation plays a major role. We propose a new place-based ESE dimension that measures assessment by individuals of their ability to elicit respect from their community. This integral ESE component points to the very meaning of entrepreneurship in highly relational contexts. Although our enhanced ESE measure incorporates some influences of place, other aspects, such as geographical context, continue to moderate the relationship between ESE and entr

Nutrition and dietary supplements in motor neuron disease.

Compromised nutrition leading to weight loss is a common and significant problem in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patient population. The benefit of aggressive and early nutritional therapy can profoundly influence the disease course, quality of life, and survival. This article reviews the role of nutrition, both as sustenance and treatment for patients who have ALS. Self-medication with dietary supplements has become increasingly popular within this patient population. Despite their popularity, the efficacy of these compounds has been largely unsupported by formal clinical trials. A

Sober housing and motivational interviewing: the Treatment Access Project.

This paper describes an innovative program that provides rental subsidies for sober housing and supportive services to persons in early recovery who are homeless and have substance use disorders. Preliminary data point to the success of this program in enhancing recovery and exiting from homelessness. In supporting sober house placements, the Treatment Access Project creates a bridge that supports these individuals in their transition from clinical treatment services to the community. Integration with natural community supports can help to build self-efficacy, which can enhance the likelihood

Pharmacologic treatment of behavioral symptoms in autism and pervasive developmental disorders.

Autism and other pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) are associated with various dysfunctional and problematic behaviors, in addition to the core features of language and social skills dysfunction that define these conditions. Although there is currently no pharmacologic cure for the core features of PDDs, some of the behavioral symptoms may be treated pharmacologically. In addition to relieving some of the daily stress in the lives of patients and their families, improvement of these behavioral symptoms, which include hyperactivity, aggression, tantrums, and self-injury, removes some of

[Management for childhood ITP].

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura(ITP) is a common bleeding disorder in childhood. Approximately 80% of the disease is acute self-limited, most has minimal bleeding and achieves spontaneous recovery of platelet count. Even for the remaining who becomes chronic defined by persistent thrombocytopenia more than 6 months from the onset, high rates of complete or partial remission are also predicted. Because of generally benign outcome in childhood ITP as well as limited efficacy of treatment which is of no more than temporary benefit, therapeutic intervention to newly diagnosed ITP or to chronic

Scoping review of equity considerations in digitally enabled patient education interventions for self-managing chronic musculoskeletal pain.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Patient education is critically important for supporting self-management of chronic musculoskeletal pain, but it is unclear if and how existing tools or interventions are meeting diverse pain management needs. Therefore, this review aimed to identify and characterise digitally enabled pain education tools or interventions and explore the extent to which they meet diverse needs. METHODS: We searched five electronic databases, including MEDLINE (via Ovid; Annexure A), Embase (via Ovid), CINAHL, PsycInfo and Google Scholar in January 2025, and screened articles based o

"The more you learn, the more you can influence"-learning circles to support citizen science in Parkinson's disease: a pilot study in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the fastest growing neurological condition, making it a public health concern. There is still much to be learned about this complex disease, and citizen science-the involvement of the public in scientific research-has been used for public health initiatives in other conditions. Meaningful engagement in science requires knowledge and skillset to do so, including a foundational understanding of one's condition. Learning circles are a well-established peer-learning format which have been used for patient education in other conditions. AIM: To explore the

Emotional intelligence and self-regulated learning: psychological pathways to student engagement and academic performance.

Emotional intelligence (EI) and self-regulated learning (SRL) have emerged as central constructs for explaining why some students sustain engagement and achieve academically under pressure while others succumb to burnout and inefficiency. This mini-review synthesizes theoretical and empirical work on the association between EI and SRL and on the psychological pathways through which the two jointly shape academic engagement and performance. We first situate the EI-SRL relationship within self-regulation theory and contrast the ability and trait models of EI, specifying how each maps onto distin

Navigating recovery: a scoping review of comprehensive approaches to postpartum substance use care and support.

BACKGROUND: Unregulated drug use, including non-prescription opioids, is a growing public health problem in Canada and the United States, compounded by a toxic drug supply and rising overdose rates. Perinatal women, particularly in the postpartum period, face increased risks, with overdose now a leading cause of maternal mortality. Despite these risks, research has largely focused on substance use during pregnancy, with limited attention to the postpartum period. Understanding the experience of postpartum women who use unregulated drugs and/or non-prescription opioids, including their recovery
