Serial neuropsychological assessment and evidence of shunt malfunction in spina bifida: a longitudinal case study.

Myelomeningocele is often accompanied by hydrocephalus (MMH), making it a potentially unstable neurological condition requiring shunt placement and possible revisions. Serial neuropsychological assessment is an important tool in monitoring children with MMH, as cognitive changes can indicate shunt malfunction and hydrocephalus. We present the case of a girl with MMH who had five neuropsychological assessments (ages 5, 7, 11, 12, and 14). Despite a lack of overt neurological symptoms or report of behavioral decline, testing at age 11 revealed decline in multiple neurobehavioral domains, and ima

Stages of change in anxiety: psychometric properties of the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA) scale.

Readiness for change is increasingly cited as an important variable in the health behaviours literature, yet there remains a dearth of research related to this construct in mental health. This study examined the psychometric properties of the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA) scale in two samples. In Study 1 (n = 252), undergraduates completed the URICA and were administered measures of hopelessness, the consequences of worry, self-esteem, anxious symptomatology, and social desirability. The reliability and validity of the URICA were generally supported, although the goodnes

Assessment Instrument for Problem-focused Coping. Reliability test of APC. Part 1.

A new self-report instrument, the Assessment Instrument of Problem-focused Coping (APC) developed from qualitative interviews, is described. This instrument provides knowledge of the patients' own competence in coping with activities of daily living (ADL), the patients' own assessment of what they experience as problems, and the extent to which they are satisfied with their ADL. The purpose of the study was to test the reliability of the instrument with regard to intra-rater reliability and internal consistency. The study group comprised 40 patients with muscular weakness and other symptoms re

Drug abuse, psychiatric disorders, and AIDS. Dual and triple diagnosis.

Substance abuse and psychiatric disorders commonly occur together. This form of dual diagnosis is notable because it complicates assessment and makes treatment more difficult for both psychiatric and drug abuse problems. Drugs can cause psychiatric disorders and can also be used as an attempt to "cure" them by self-medication. The spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among drug users has added a third potential clinical problem, that of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, to the difficulties already presented by drug abuse and psychiatric disorders. Patients with this triple di

Minor Symptoms Evaluation (MSE) Profile--a questionnaire for assessment of subjective CNS-related symptoms.

Minor Symptoms Evaluation Profile (MSE-profile) is an instrument for the assessment of subjective CNS-related symptoms and has recently been documented. This self-applied questionnaire includes 24 items and uses a visual analogue scale to record perceived symptoms. Based on a subjective grouping followed by a principal component analysis of the results of 374 individuals to confirm the grouping, 15 out of the 24 items were formed into three dimensions: Contentment (7 items), Vitality (5 items) and Sleep (3 items). The Cronbach's alpha coefficient used to evaluate the internal consistency of th

Cognitive-behavioural therapy and short-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy versus brief psychosocial intervention in adolescents with unipolar major depression (IMPACT): a multicentre, pragmatic, observer-blind, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although there are effective psychological treatments for unipolar major depression in adolescents, whether or not one or more of the available therapies maintain reduced depressive symptoms 1 year after the end of treatment is not known. This is a non-trivial issue because maintaining lowered depressive symptoms below a clinical threshold level reduces the risk for diagnostic relapse into the adult years. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether or not either of two specialist psychological treatments, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) or short-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy (STPP),

Interactions between self-help and hospice and palliative care - Opportunities, barriers and needs (Self-Pall): A study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: A progressive and life-limiting disease can cause enormous psychological distress for patients and family caregivers. Health-related collective self-help could be a coping strategy by facilitating interaction with others in similar situations. Scarce literature is available on how those patients and their caregivers could benefit from self-help activities, how self-help groups deal with death and grief, and whether there are interactions between self-help and hospice and palliative care. The Self-Pall project aims at developing recommendations tailored at different actor groups t

Transdiagnostic associations between subjective gesture behaviour and objective performance in schizophrenia and depression.

Social communication deficits are common across mental-health disorders, yet little is known about how individuals perceive their own gesture behaviours. Gaining insight into this, particularly across different disorders, could enhance our understanding of social communicative impairments and disruptions in self-awareness. The current study included 274 participants: N = 113 with schizophrenia, N = 65 with depression and N = 96 healthy controls where we compared self-reported gesture behaviours in social and non-social contexts. These self-reports where further explored in relation to objectiv

Relational skills and self-awareness outcomes in psychotherapy trainees.

Relational skills and self-awareness are important aspects of psychotherapy training, shaping how trainees relate to clients, reflect on their experiences, and develop professionally. Despite their importance, little research has examined how these aspects are related during training. This cross-sectional study investigated the associations between relational skills and self-awareness outcomes in psychotherapy trainees and explored whether these variables differed according to stages of training, age, engagement in personal therapy, and self-reported mental health difficulties. The sample incl

Self-Esteem and Repetitive Negative Thinking as Mediators of the Association Between Bullying and Disordered Eating.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders are associated with marked distress and impairment, including elevated risk for anxiety, depression, and suicidality. Bullying victimization is associated with eating disorder symptoms in late adolescence and young adulthood, when peer relationships and social evaluation are developmentally salient. Cognitive-affective processes, including self-esteem and repetitive negative thinking, may help explain this association; however, less is known about whether these constructs show unique indirect associations when examined simultaneously. METHODS: Self-esteem and repet

The association between generalized anxiety disorder and disordered eating symptoms among Lebanese adults with the moderating effect of self esteem.

Our study aims to assess the moderating effect of self-esteem in the association between generalized anxiety disorder and disordered eating symptoms among a sample of Lebanese adults. The study engaged a cohort of 629 participants, who were recruited in May 2023, utilizing a snowball sampling technique. Data were collected via a questionnaire that included socio-demographic variables and the following scales: the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-5), the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-7), and the Single Item Self-Esteem Scale (SISE). Higher GAD-5 scores (Beta = 0.01; p = .004) were significa

Childhood Emotional Abuse and Somatic Symptoms: The Mediating Effect of Self-Hate.

Childhood emotional abuse is a recognized factor for long-term psychological and physical health problems, including persistent somatic symptoms. Negative self-beliefs, such as self-hate-related beliefs, may explain how emotional mistreatment contributes to physical distress in adulthood beyond general emotional difficulties. A longitudinal study was conducted with 298 help-seeking adults. At baseline, participants completed measures of childhood emotional abuse, self-hate, and general negative affectivity. Somatic symptoms were assessed two months later. Mediation analyses tested whether self

Non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents with mood disorders and the roles of self-compassion and emotional regulation.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the characteristics and psychological mechanism of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents with mood disorders. We examined how self-compassion and emotional regulation affected NSSI and tested the mediating role of self-compassion in the link between emotional regulation and NSSI. METHOD: We recruited outpatient and inpatient adolescent patients with bipolar and related disorders or depressive disorders (DSM-5), with a focus on NSSI. We also recruited healthy controls from the community. We collected demographic and clinical data. The Adolescent Self

Exploring the relationship between retrieval practice, self-efficacy, and memory.

Retrieval practice effect refers to improved memory on a final test for information retrieved one or more times. Although past theoretical work identifies cognitive mechanisms to explain retrieval practice benefits, it is possible that improving self-efficacy during learning may also contribute to better memory, in line with limited past work showing a relationship between self-efficacy and memory. Across two experiments, we examine the potential relationship between retrieval practice, self-efficacy, and memory. In Experiment 1, we examined the extent change in self-efficacy accounted for imp

Mailed Human Papillomavirus Self-Collection With Papanicolaou Test Referral for Infrequently Screened Women in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Testing for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection using mailed, self-collected samples is a promising approach to increase screening in women who do not attend clinic screening at recommended intervals. METHODS: To assess this intervention among high-risk women in the United States, 429 women without a Papanicolaou (Pap) test in 4 or more years (overdue by US guidelines) were recruited from the general population. Participants aged 30 to 65 years were mailed a kit to self-collect a cervicovaginal sample at home, return the sample by mail, and receive HPV results by teleph
