Entry into vocational rehabilitation program following work-related hand injury: Potential candidates.

OBJECTIVES: This case-control study aimed to investigate the predictors of return to work (RTW) following work-related major forearm, wrist or hand injury at the preparation stage of return to work. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 80 clients were recruited and divided into 2 groups depending on their readiness of RTW. The groups were compared with each other with regard to their demographics, compensation status, hand injury severity, health perception, and time off work (TOW) using correlation coefficient. Predictors of RTW were measured by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: There were

Deliberate self-harm behavior among Italian young adults: correlations with clinical and nonclinical dimensions of personality.

This study aims to explore rates of deliberate self-harm (DSH) behaviors and their psychological and psychopathological correlates within a sample of nonclinical young adults (N = 365; 63% women; M age = 23 ± 4.06). Participants completed the Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory and other self-report questionnaires assessing clinical (borderline personality, dissociative, and depersonalization traits) and nonclinical (body perception, behavioral inhibition and activation, cognitive emotional regulation, and the Big Five traits) dimensions of their personality. The rate of DSH in the present sample w

Effect of root-canal sealer on the bond strength of fiberglass post to root dentin.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of different root-canal sealers on the bond strength of a fiberglass post cemented with self-adhesive resin cements. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty extracted maxillary single-rooted canines were prepared with the crown-down technique and randomly divided into four groups according to the tested sealer: Group 1: control group, gutta-percha cone only (no sealer); Group 2: EndoREZ; Group 3: Sealapex; Group 4: Endofill. The roots were obturated with the gutta-percha cone using the cold lateral compaction technique. Fiberglass posts were cemented into the prepared p

Mediators of a coping and communication-enhancing intervention and a supportive counseling intervention among women diagnosed with gynecological cancers.

The authors evaluated mechanisms of change for a coping and communication-enhancing intervention (CCI) and supportive counseling (SC). They proposed that the effects of CCI on depressive symptoms would be mediated by psychological processes targeted by CCI, namely increases in the following: positive reappraisal, acceptance, planful problem solving, attempts to understand emotional reactions to cancer, emotional expression, seeking of emotional and instrumental support, and self-esteem. The authors hypothesized that the effects of SC on depressive symptoms would be mediated by the processes en

A case of persistent retrograde amnesia following a dissociative fugue: neuropsychological and neurofunctional underpinnings of loss of autobiographical memory and self-awareness.

Autobiographical memory relies on complex interactions between episodic memory contents, associated emotions and a sense of self-continuity over the course of one's life. This paper reports a study based upon the case of the patient NN who suffered from a complete loss of autobiographical memory and awareness of identity subsequent to a dissociative fugue. Neuropsychological, behavioral, and functional neuroimaging tests converged on the conclusion that NN suffered from a selective retrograde amnesia following an episode of dissociative fugue, during which he had lost explicit knowledge and vi

[Paraphilia, sexual preference disorders. Diagnosis, etiology, epidemiology, treatment and prevention].

Hostility towards relationships is one prominent characteristic symptom for disorders of sexual preference (ICD-10) and paraphilias (DSM-IV). Paraphilic symptoms sometimes progress to obsessive or addictive- like forms leading to a loss of self-control but can occur also as single incidents or as episodic events. Besides constitutional aspects, problems in the development of close relationships to primary caregivers (attachment) play an important role in the development of these disorders. Actual relationship- and self-confidence problems often trigger the severity of disturbance, especially i

Relationships between the anxiety sensitivity index, the suffocation fear scale, and responses to CO2 inhalation.

Interest in documenting ways to predict anxious responding in panic disorder (PD) patients has proliferated recently in the literature. In the current study, two self-report measures were assessed to determine their relative utility in predicting responses to a panicogenic challenge. The Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) and the Suffocation Fear Scale (SFS) were evaluated by correlating scores on these measures with reactions to inhalation of 35% carbon dioxide (CO2), assessed via anxiety ratings, panic symptom intensity, tidal volume (VT) and respiratory rate (RR). A sample of 14 PD patients an

Social phobia in disabled workers with chronic musculoskeletal pain.

The present study assessed the prevalence and impact of social phobia and other anxiety disorders in disabled workers with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Potential participants were 200 disabled workers consecutively referred to an interdisciplinary tertiary care centre. A two stage screening process was used in which: (a) a self-report battery was given during a pre-admission visit, and (b) pre-planned selection criteria were applied to the self-report instruments to select patients for a structured diagnostic interview. Fifty-four of the 146 patients who provided complete responses on the sel

Analgesia produced in women by genital self-stimulation.

This study investigated the relative effectiveness of specific genital regional self-stimulation in elevating pain thresholds. Anecdotal reports in humans suggest that sexual activity and orgasm decrease a wide variety of human responses to pain and touch, but the phenomenon has not been evaluated objectively. Two types of self-stimulation, pressure and pleasurable, were applied by 10 women to the anterior vaginal wall, the posterior vaginal wall, and the clitoris. Significant increases in pain thresholds but not tactile thresholds occurred when pressure stimulation was applied to the anterior

The effect of publicity on the reporting of toxic-shock syndrome in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) surveillance for toxic-shock syndrome (TSS) were compared; the distributions of CDC and Wisconsin cases in 1980 by calendar quarter of the initial onset were virtually identical. Among 131 cases in Wisconsin, 33 of 40 self-reported vs. 16 of 91 physician-reported cases were reported during the four-week period (September 18-October 15, 1980) following the CDC announcement of a higher relative risk of TSS among users of Rely tampons (Procter and Gamble, Cincinnati, Ohio) (P less than 0.001). Of cases with onsets during October 1, 1979-June 30,

Action control bridges the planning-behaviour gap: a longitudinal study on physical exercise in young adults.

OBJECTIVES: Maintaining physical exercise levels may not only require motivation and planning but also action control which is supposed to mediate between planning and exercise. DESIGN: Behavioural intention, action planning, coping planning and past behaviour were assessed at baseline, and action control and concurrent exercise were measured one month later in 497 young adults. METHOD: Three nested structural models were specified to examine different mediation mechanisms. One model reflected the intention-planning-behaviour chain, the other one focused on the intention-action control-behav

Effect of Early Exercise Rehabilitation Nursing on Promoting the Quality of Prognosis in Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients Following Interventional Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a standard strategy for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). As the core content of cardiac rehabilitation, early exercise rehabilitation can promote the establishment of coronary collateral circulation, effectively increase blood flow and cardiac functional reserve by 10%-30%, raise ischemia threshold, improve myocardial metabolism and cardiac function, and reduce mortality by 37%. OBJECTIVE: To probe the effect of early exercise rehabilitation nursing on cardiac function and activities of daily living in AMI patients following PCI. DESI

A Nurse-Led Metamemory-Based Intervention to Improve Medication Adherence in Older Adults With H-Type Hypertension: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: H-type hypertension substantially increases cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risk in older adults, yet long-term medication adherence remains suboptimal. Beyond regimen complexity, age-related cognitive vulnerability and limited self-monitoring capacity may undermine adherence. However, few nurse-led interventions explicitly target memory-related mechanisms underlying medication-taking behavior. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-led, metamemory-based intervention in improving medication adherence and related cognitive and psychosocial outcomes in older adults w

Effects of Semi-occluded Vocal Tract Training in Adult Choir Singers: A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Tube Phonation in Water and Humming.

BACKGROUND: There is a notable lack of empirical research on the effects of semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) training among choral singers. Existing studies primarily focus on immediate effects and group-level acoustic output, with limited attention to individual voice quality and intervention outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a four-week video-based self-guided intervention using SOVT exercises, either tube phonation in water or humming, on individual voice quality, vocal capacities, and self-perceived vocal function in adult amateur choir singers. METHODS:

Impact of a youth and caregiver intervention on HIV self-management among youth living with HIV: a protocol for the Family Connections cluster RCT in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Families play a critical role in adolescent management of chronic illnesses; however, HIV care and treatment programs rarely engage older adolescents and young adults (AYA) with their family caregivers. Innovative approaches are needed though, as AYA consistently have worse HIV-related outcomes than adults and lag on all the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. To address this gap, a family-based group intervention called Family Connections, was pilot tested for feasibility and acceptability in Zambia from April to November 2016. Family Connections consists of 10 group sessions every other wee

Is there a relationship between functional mobility, balance, manual dexterity and perceived dual-task performance in early-stage multiple sclerosis patients?

The effects of motor and cognitive impairments on mobility and balance in patients with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) are well established; however, little is known about the relationships between self-reported dual-task performance, mobility, balance, and manual dexterity in minimally disabled PwMS. While objective assessments offer valuable insights, self-reported measures provide a broader perspective on perceived abilities in real life. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between self-reported dual-task performance, mobility, balance, and dexterity in minimally disabled PwMS and
