The orbitofrontal-anterior temporal network complements the attention network for where to look in social situations.

Human neuroimaging experiments have consistently found dorsal and ventral attention networks subserving spatial shifts of covert attention or eye movements. However, these experiments used abstract, artificial stimuli for better experimental stimulus control and clearly defined instructions about where to attend or what to search for. This clearly is not an adequate model of eye movement control in natural environments full of semantic and social information. Here, we show that during movie viewing, activation of the dorsal and ventral attention networks was complemented by activation patterns

Advantages, limitations, and ethical concerns of AI-assisted qualitative research in nursing: insights from a human-AI comparative thematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: The rapid development of large language models has accelerated the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in qualitative research. AI-assisted thematic analysis may improve coding efficiency and data organization, but concerns remain about its ability to interpret emotionally nuanced, contextually embedded, and culturally situated nursing narratives. Existing studies have emphasized coding performance and efficiency, whereas ethical and interpretive concerns in nursing qualitative research remain insufficiently examined. OBJECTIVE: This secondary qualitative analysis compared human-l

Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes-With a Focus on Older Populations: An AI-Assisted Rapid Review of Use and Implementation in Clinical and Organizational Practice.

Background/Objectives: The aging global population has led to a rising prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), in which biomedical outcomes alone fail to capture patients' lived experiences. Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) can provide insights into psychological, psychosocial, and quality-of-life (QoL) dimensions, yet their use-particularly among older adults-remains inconsistent. This AI-assisted rapid review aimed to map how PROMs are currently applied in adults with T2DM, with specific attention to studies involving older populations, focusing on their role in assessing wel

Neuropsychological outcomes of hippocampus-sparing anterior temporal lobectomy versus stereotactic laser amygdalohippocampectomy in language-dominant temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative neuropsychological deficits pose a significant challenge for temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery, particularly in the language-dominant hemisphere. Two surgical approaches have been suggested to mitigate such adverse outcomes: stereotactic laser amygdalohippocampectomy (SLAH) and hippocampus-sparing anterior temporal lobectomy (HSATL). This retrospective cohort study compares the seizure control and neuropsychological outcomes of HSATL and SLAH in language-dominant TLE. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study compared 27 patients (nine male, mean age = 35.8 years) with

Dynamic context-aware multi-modal deep learning for longitudinal prediction of Parkinson's disease progression.

Accurately forecasting the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD) motor symptoms in early-to-moderate stages is essential for timely intervention and personalized patient care but remains challenging due to heterogeneous and longitudinal symptom evolution. We present a novel dynamic context-aware multi-modal deep learning framework that predicts future motor symptom severity by integrating advanced voice biomarkers with signal processing techniques, clinical progression features, demographic metadata, and semantically enriched patient summary embeddings derived from comprehensive clinical nar

Deep learning-assisted analysis of biomarker changes after increase of dosing from aflibercept 2 mg to 8 mg in therapy-resistant neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

PURPOSE: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remains the leading cause of blindness in developed countries. There are many different intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs available for the treatment of neovascular AMD (nAMD). Unfortunately, not all patients respond equally well to the drugs, and some show recurrences during treatment. Since 01/2024, aflibercept 8 mg represents an additional treatment option and contains a four times higher dosage than the already known aflibercept 2 mg. METHODS: To evaluate the real-world efficacy of aflibercept 8 mg in refracto

Time Course and Severity of Cognitive Changes as a Function of Aβ Positivity and APOE Genotype in Alzheimer Disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: APOE4 is the strongest genetic risk factor of sporadic Alzheimer disease (AD), associated with greater β-amyloid (Aβ) deposition and accelerated cognitive decline, especially in episodic memory. However, it remains unclear whether this decline is driven by increased Aβ burden in APOE4 carriers or by greater susceptibility to Aβ-related effects. In this study, we examined whether the accelerated decline in episodic memory among APOE4 carriers is due to increased Aβ deposition or heightened susceptibility to Aβ-related effects. METHODS: We analyzed data from individua

White Matter Hyperintensity Load Independent From the Stroke Lesion Is Associated With Chronic Aphasia Severity and Treatment Outcome.

BACKGROUND: Although many studies have suggested that white matter hyperintensity (WMH) severity predicts naming and aphasia severity in chronic poststroke aphasia, there are inconsistencies in the literature. WMHs are typically symmetrical in neurotypical controls, and measuring WMH in the contralateral hemisphere is likely the best option to estimate brain health independently from the stroke lesion and avoid measurement contamination from stroke-related gliosis. In this study, we aimed to clarify the discrepancies in the literature by testing whether WMH rating methods are related to clinic

α-linolenic acid-induced facilitation of GABAergic synaptic transmission is mediated via acid-sensing ion channel (ASIC1a) activity in the basolateral amygdala.

ABSTRACT: To enhance the reliability and stability of information acquisition, biological perception systems have gradually evolved from unimodal processing to multimodal integration mechanisms. Audio-visual cross-modal integration, in particular, has demonstrated robustness and generalization capabilities in key cognitive tasks such as speech recognition, emotion processing, and spatial localization. Moreover, increasing physiological evidence points to the existence of direct connections between primary perceptual layers during audiovisual information processing. However, how these connectio
