Serodiagnosis of fasciolosis by fast protein liquid chromatography-fractionated excretory/secretory antigens.

In several studies, different antigenic preparations and diverse immunological tests were applied for serodiagnosis of Fasciola hepatica infections. Most of these preparations showed cross-reactivity with proteins of other parasites. Application of purified antigens might reduce these cross-reactivities. Here, we used fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC)-fractionated extracts of F. hepatica excretory/secretory antigens (E/S Ags) for serodiagnosis of human and sheep fasciolosis. To develop an improved diagnostic method, we fractionated F. hepatica E/S Ags by anion exchange chromatography o

Fatty acid composition of the ovine longissimus dorsi muscle: effect of feed restriction in three breeds of different origin.

BACKGROUND: Muscle fatty acid profile reflects the body condition of animals and has a noticeable effect on meat quality. Herein, longissimus dorsi muscle of three different sheep breeds, Damara (a fat-tailed breed), Dorper and Australian Merino sheep, was analysed for fatty acid composition. The three breeds were subjected to two distinctive feeding levels (ad libitum and restricted feeding) over 42 days. RESULTS: The Damara sheep revealed several differences compared to the other two breeds, namely a higher concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which can be related to being a fat-ta

Decellularized human valve allografts.

BACKGROUND: Variable performance of allograft tissues in children and some adults may be linked to an immune response and could be mitigated by reducing implant antigenicity. METHODS: As endothelial and fibroblast cells are the likely source of valve antigenicity, human (CryoValve SG) and sheep pulmonary valves were decellularized using the SynerGraft treatment process. Treated valves were evaluated in vitro using histochemical, biomechanical, and hydrodynamic methods, and compared with standard cryopreserved valves. Four SynerGraft-treated and two cryopreserved sheep pulmonary valves were im

Comparative molecular characterization of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis of different origin.

Ribotyping and susceptibility to 17 antimicrobial agents were used to compare 37 isolates of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis (28 from horses, 1 from cattle, 3 from sheep and 5 from goats) derived from various types of lesions, and different geographic locations. According to the presence of nitrate reductase, all but one isolate from horses reduced nitrate (nitrate-positive), whereas all isolates from sheep and goats were unable to reduce nitrate (nitrate-negative). The ribotype of the nitrate-negative isolate from a horse with ulcerative lymphangitis was identical to all the other isolates

A multi-source data-based modelling study on brucellosis transmission risk analysis and control strategies in Zhejiang Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis presents a severe challenge to public health due to its complex transmission mechanism. In China, regions are categorized into three types based on the number of new human brucellosis cases or provinces affected by animal outbreaks, with tailored control strategies adopted accordingly. Currently, most research on brucellosis transmission modeling focuses on Type I regions. However, due to regional variations in farming practices, influencing factors, and control measures, existing studies are highly region-specific, restricting their direct application to Type II region

Immunogenicity of NSDV GP38 and the role of furin in GP38 proteolytic processing.

UNLABELLED: Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV) is a tick-borne orthonairovirus, which is genetically related to Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), and causes severe hemorrhagic gastroenteritis in infected sheep. CCHFV GP38, a cleavage product of the CCHFV glycoprotein precursor (GPC), has recently attracted attention: not only has GP38 been reported to elicit detectable anti-GP38 antibodies in CCHFV-infected patients, but anti-GP38 antibodies have also been shown to protect mice from lethal CCHFV challenge. While proteolytic cleavage of CCHFV GP38 has been described to involve the

Reproduction Symposium: developmental programming of reproductive and metabolic health.

Inappropriate programming of the reproductive system by developmental exposure to excess steroid hormones is of concern. Sheep are well suited for investigating developmental origin of reproductive and metabolic disorders. The developmental time line of female sheep (approximately 5 mo gestation and approximately 7 mo to puberty) is ideal for conducting sequential studies of the progression of metabolic and/or reproductive disruption from the developmental insult to manifestation of adult consequences. Major benefits of using sheep include knowledge of established critical periods to target ad

An evaluation of the efficacy of compound alpha and triclabendazole against two isolates of Fasciola hepatica.

Seventy indoor-reared sheep were divided into 10 groups to test the efficacy of the experimental fasciolicide, compound alpha (15mg/kg) against triclabendazole (TCBZ)-resistant and TCBZ-susceptible F. hepatica infections. Activity against the Sligo TCBZ-resistant isolate was tested at three time points post-infection (p.i.): 3 days, 4 weeks and 12 weeks (Groups 1-3, respectively). A parallel trial was carried out using TCBZ (10mg/kg) (Groups 5-7): this provided a direct comparison between the efficacies of the two drugs. Group 4 served as an untreated Sligo control. Groups 8 and 9 were setup t

Tricuspid Valve Is Transcriptionally Active During Prolonged Pressure Overload, Right-Sided Heart Failure, and Valve Regurgitation.

BACKGROUND: Right-sided heart failure (RHF), in the presence of tricuspid valve regurgitation, results from left-sided heart failure, pulmonary hypertension (PH), or heart malformations. The occurrence of RHF and tricuspid regurgitation represents a critical indicator of hospitalization rates and all-cause mortality. However, RHF has remained understudied, specifically with respect to the tricuspid valve. METHODS: Using the outbred sheep (Ovis aries) model of pulmonary artery banding that induces RHF and tricuspid regurgitation, we generated 3 batches of RNA sequencing for 354 samples contain

Gastrointestinal parasites and molecular characterization of Eimeria spp. among imported small ruminants in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Omani market imports live sheep and goats from across the globe to meet the high human demand for fresh meat. However, this reliance on imports may increase the risk of introducing foreign pathogens despite the strict quarantine regulations. Therefore, we aimed to determine endoparasites among imported sheep and goats that may escape through the sole quarantine station in Muscat. For this purpose, 205 sheep and 47 goats' fecal samples were collected from animals imported from different countries at the Central Quarantine Station in Muscat between 2019 and 2020. The identification and quant

Stability of SARS-CoV-2 in Biological Fluids of Animals.

Since its first emergence in 2019, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has continued to evolve genetically, jump species barriers, and expand its host range. There is growing evidence of interspecies transmission including infection of domestic animals and widespread circulation in wildlife. However, knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 stability in animal biological fluids and their role in transmission is still limited as previous studies focused on human biological fluids. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the SARS-CoV-2 stability in biological fluids from three animal sp

Prevalence of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus among Livestock and Ticks in Zhambyl Region, Kazakhstan, 2017.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a highly fatal zoonotic disease endemic to Kazakhstan. Previous work estimated the seroprevalence of CCHF virus (CCHFV) among livestock owners in the Zhambyl region of southern Kazakhstan at 1.2%. To estimate CCHFV seroprevalence among cattle and sheep, we selected 15 villages with known history of CCHFV circulation (endemic) and 15 villages without known circulation (nonendemic) by cluster sampling with probability proportional to livestock population size. We collected whole blood samples from 521 sheep and 454 cattle from randomly selected household

Genetic characterization of livestock and human hydatid cyst isolates from northwest Iran, using the mitochondrial cox1 gene sequence.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by larval stages of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, is one of the most important zoonoses distributed worldwide. Genotype analysis of the parasite isolates from various hosts is required to better understand the host specificity and transmission routes. The aim of this study was to identify the genotypes of E. granulosus isolated from humans and domestic animals from northwest of Iran (Zanjan Province) using the mitochondrial cox1 gene sequence. A total of 86 hydatid cysts including 49 sheep and 28 cattle isolates from the slaughterhouse and nine human

Prevalence and diversity of cystic echinococcosis in livestock in Maasailand, Kenya.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disease caused by several members of the Echinococcus granulosus species complex. In East Africa, several species/strains are known to occur in livestock and humans, but host preferences, relative frequencies and spatial distribution of these taxa are poorly known. Here, we contribute livestock data for Maasailand of southern Kenya. Total CE prevalence was 25.8 % in cattle (151/587), 16.5 % in sheep (71/430) and 10.8 % in goats (21/194), which is a significant increase compared to surveys done about three decades ago.
