Oral rehabilitation of children with ectodermal dysplasia.

The aim of this study was to describe the clinical treatment of young patients, affected by ectodermal dysplasia (ED), and to possibly establish clinical guidelines. The study design was case series. ED syndromes (EDs) are a heterogeneous group of inherited diseases characterised by abnormal development of tissues of ectodermal origin. The most common form of EDs is X linked hypohidrotic ED (HED). Characteristic triad of HED is oligo-anodontia, hypotricosis, hypo-anhydrosis. Oligo-anodontia is one of the most severe impairment, since it affects chewing, swallowing, speech, esthetics and social

Does solitary substance use increase adolescents' risk for poor psychosocial and behavioral outcomes? A 9-year longitudinal study comparing solitary and social users.

This longitudinal study compared Grade 8 solitary cigarette smokers (n = 541), drinkers (n = 577), and marijuana users (n = 148) with adolescents who restricted their use of these substances to social settings (ns = 562, 1,426, and 388, respectively) on adolescent functioning and young adult outcomes. In Grade 8, solitary users held more positive beliefs about the consequences of substance use, earned poorer grades, engaged in more deviant behavior, and devoted less time to school and more time to social activities. By age 23, these solitary users had lower educational attainment, poorer self-

Social processing distorts physical distance perception.

Psychopathy is traditionally linked to higher-level cognitive processes, but its impact on low-level cognitive functions has remained largely unexplored. This study investigates the relationship between the fundamental cognitive function of physical distance estimation and our social predisposition towards others, as captured by psychopathic traits, grouped into the three facets of Fearless Dominance, Self-Centered Impulsivity and Coldheartedness. Using an innovative experimental design, participants estimated the distance of an approaching avatar agent. We demonstrate that social processing,

A multiple linear regression analysis identifies factors associated with fear of cancer recurrence in postoperative patients with gastric cancer.

To investigate the risk factors of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) in postoperative patients with gastric cancer (GC) and provide references for targeted nursing intervention development. A total of 84 patients who underwent GC surgery were included in this study. The fear of progression questionnaire-short form and social support rating scale were conducted, and multiple linear regression was performed to identify risk factors of FCR. The score of the fear of progression questionnaire-short form in patients with GC surgery was 39.1 ± 7.6. The results of multiple linear regression showed that

The Effects of Social Skills Interventions for Students With EBD and ASD: A Single-Case Meta-Analysis.

Social skills interventions are critical for promoting social, emotional, and behavioral competence for students with or at risk of emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This single-case meta-analysis examined the effects of social skills interventions (SSIs) for students with EBD and ASD. Effect sizes were calculated for 78 cases across 25 included studies using a nonparametric effect size, Baseline Corrected Tau. The overall weighted mean effect size of 0.54 suggested a moderate effect across the 25 studies. The overall weighted mean effects for studie

Is avoidant disorder part of the social phobia spectrum in a referred sample of Brazilian children and adolescents?

The diagnosis of avoidant disorder was deleted from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental disorders--fourth edition (DSM-IV) based on a 'committee decision' suggesting that avoidant disorder is part of the social phobia spectrum. The objective of the present study was to examine the nature of this clinical association in a referred sample of Brazilian children and adolescents. We assessed a referred sample of 375 youths using semi-structured diagnostic interview methodology. Demographic (age at admission to the study and sex) and clinical (level of impairment, age at onset of symptom

Visual results and social rehabilitation after cataract surgery. A retrospective comparison of the effect of non-IOL and IOL surgery.

This report examines the changes that occurred in the post-operative visual and social function of patients with cataract when the hospital responsible for cataract treatment (roughly 1000 cataract extractions per year) shifted from non-IOL to IOL techniques. Visual function and vision-dependent social performance were compared retrospectively in 116 patients, 53 of whom had undergone cataract extraction without IOL implantation, and 63 of whom had been treated by IOL implantation. Patients with no IOL had the possibility of using extended-wear contact lenses if unable to tolerate aphakic spec

Quality of life in chronic dialysis patients. Factors unrelated to dialysis modality.

The quality of life (medical, psychological, and social adaptation) of 66 chronic dialysis patients was studied cross-sectionally. The participants had similar levels of medical, psychological, and social adaptation to those found in previous studies of chronic dialysis patients. Medical, psychological, and social adaptation are independent dimensions that are only weakly intercorrelated. When categorized by specific individual or treatment characteristics, men and those over age 51 had poorer medical and psychological adaptation than did women and younger dialysis patients. Duration of dialys

Protégé Effect for Behavior Change: Does Teaching Digital Stress Solutions to Others Reduce One's Own?

The protégé effect suggests that individuals learn a subject more effectively when they teach it to others. Can we therefore assume that when individuals with a problematic behavior teach others about it and how to manage it, they become more likely to reduce and better manage that behavior themselves? We address this question by evaluating a protégé-based approach to reducing and managing digital stress (DS). Over 3 weeks, 137 participants with moderate-high DS were assigned to four groups. Two groups followed a protégé-based approach: a passive group, given materials to teach, and an active

Employed cancer survivors develop a peer-support intervention to improve social connections: a participatory design study.

INTRODUCTION: Among the 4.3 million working-age breast cancer survivors in the U.S., employment offers financial stability, purpose, and normalcy. However, many face barriers that hinder workforce participation, including social disconnection. Using a participatory intervention design approach that directly engages survivors, this study aimed to identify root causes of disconnection and prioritize solutions to support psychosocial wellbeing and work retention. METHODS: This study recruited six employed breast cancer survivors for a design team that used the Intervention Design and Analysis Sc

Lower Striatal and Cortical Calretinin Interneuron Density Associated With Altered Social Behavior in Cntnap2 Knockout Mice.

Variants in the CNTNAP2 gene, encoding the cell adhesion molecule CASPR2, have been identified as genetic risk factors for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the mechanisms through which CNTNAP2 dysfunction alters circuit function remain unknown. Interneurons, as key regulators of excitatory-inhibitory balance, represent a candidate source of vulnerability. In this study, we quantified calretinin-positive (CR+) and parvalbumin-positive (PV+) interneuron density in the caudoputamen (CP) and somatosensory cortex (SSC) of Cntnap2 knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice and assessed their rela

Mental health burdens, typhoon and structural health inequities: evidence from a global perspective.

BACKGROUND: Against the backdrop of accelerating climate change and more frequent extreme weather events, typhoon disasters have become a major challenge to mental health. Based on the Social Determinants of Health theory and integrating the Cumulative Disadvantage Model with Structural Causal Influence analysis, this study evaluates how typhoon exposure affects the burden of mental health disorders and how these effects vary with social structural differences. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanisms linking typhoon exposure to the burden of mental health disorders, and to quantify the moder

The Social Amplification of Risk Framework Revisited: Report From an Exst Workshop on Opportunities for Conceptual Advancement.

The Social Amplification of Risk Framework (SARF) is intended to facilitate the integration of studies about risk across natural, biological, physical, and social sciences. Researchers employing SARF have advanced understandings of the complex dynamic responses of social systems to hazards, the ways that risks are experienced and perceived, and the ways that consequences can ripple across social and governance systems, geographies, and economic sectors. In seeking to build on a Special Issue of Risk Analysis on SARF organized and edited by Kasperson, et al. (2022), an international interdiscip

Improving Social Functioning in Youth at Clinical High Risk for Psychotic Disorders With a Virtual Reality Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: The Feasibility and Acceptability of REVIVE.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is when mental disorders such as psychosis frequently emerge, with long-term impacts on social functioning if left untreated. Early intervention, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and innovative approaches like virtual reality (VR)-assisted therapy, can help young people in their social recovery. METHOD: During the development phase of REVIVE therapy, input was gathered through group consultations with 10 youth advisors aged 16-25 who had lived experience. Their insights informed the design of the virtual social environments. A feasibility and acceptabili

Mechanisms of vulnerability in borderline personality psychopathology: The role of childhood maltreatment, social cognition, and emotion dysregulation.

Childhood maltreatment (CM), impaired social cognition, emotion dysregulation, and clinical outcomes (e.g., aggression, suicidal ideation, non-suicidal self-injury) frequently co-occur in borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, the precise associations between individual CM facets, cumulative CM severity, and social cognition (e.g., theory of mind (ToM) and facial emotion recognition) remain underexplored. Furthermore, the collective role of depression, CM, emotion dysregulation, and social cognition in BPD-related outcomes has not been investigated. A sample of 183 patients with BPD a

Adolescent Social Isolation Facilitates Tau Spread in Raphe Nuclei, Linking Depression and Hyperalgesia in Alzheimer's Disease.

Tau pathology in brainstem serotonergic circuits drives early neuropsychiatric dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet mechanisms linking the exposome, particularly social stress exposures to depression and altered pain perception, remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that adolescent social isolation, a critical psychosocial exposome factor and major trigger of depression, facilitates tau propagation in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) and downstream raphe nuclei, producing both neuropsychiatric and pain-related sequelae. Tau[P301L] was transduced into the DRN of 30-day socially isolated or
