The Social and Psychological Impacts of Gambling in the Cree Communities of Northern Québec.

A detailed survey of gambling, addiction and mental health was conducted with randomly selected respondents (n = 506) from four Cree communities of Northern Quebec. The study examined the current patterns of gambling in relation to demographic, social, and psychological factors. Instruments included the Canadian Problem Gambling Index, Addiction Severity Index, Beck Depression Inventory and the computerized Diagnostic Interview Schedule for psychiatric diagnoses. Overall, 69.2 % of the total sample participated in any gambling/gaming activities over the past year; 20.6 % of this group were cla

Study protocol: the JEU cohort study--transversal multiaxial evaluation and 5-year follow-up of a cohort of French gamblers.

BACKGROUND: There is abundant literature on how to distinguish problem gambling (PG) from social gambling, but there are very few studies of the long-term evolution of gambling practice. As a consequence, the correlates of key state changes in the gambling trajectory are still unknown. The objective of the JEU cohort study is to identify the determinants of key state changes in the gambling practice, such as the emergence of a gambling problem, natural recovery from a gambling problem, resolution of a gambling problem with intermediate care intervention, relapses or care recourse. METHODS/DES

Understanding Positive Play: An Exploration of Playing Experiences and Responsible Gambling Practices.

This study is one of the first to explore in detail the behaviors, attitudes and motivations of players that show no signs of at-risk or problem gambling behavior (so-called 'positive players'). Via an online survey, 1484 positive players were compared with 209 problem players identified using the Lie/Bet screen. The study identified two distinct groups of positive players defined according to their motivations to play and their engagement with responsible gambling (RG) practices. Those positive players that played most frequently employed the most personal RG strategies. Reasons that positive

Electronic screen media for persons with autism spectrum disorders: results of a survey.

Social and anecdotal reports suggest a predilection for visual media among individuals on the autism spectrum, yet no formal investigation has explored the extent of that use. Using a distributed questionnaire design, parents and caregivers report on time allotted toward media, including observable behaviors and communicative responses. More time was spent engaged with electronic screen media (ESM) than any other leisure activity. Television and movie viewing was more popular than computer usage. Across media platforms, animated programs were more highly preferred. Prevalent verbal and physica

Latina a Latina: developing a breast cancer decision support intervention.

Latinas have the fastest rising incidence of breast cancer. Yet, little data are available about Latinas' breast cancer treatment experiences. Aims were to: (1) identify factors in Latinas' treatment decision making and (2) develop and pilot a decision support intervention. Thirty-seven Latinas diagnosed with breast cancer participated. Qualitative data were used to identify intervention messages. Most women desired help in asking questions. Women were most concerned about chemotherapy side effects. Cultural values (e.g. personalismo, familismo) helped structure intervention messages. In phase

Fighting as a marker for multiple problem behaviors in adolescents.

PURPOSE: Behaviors that put adolescents at risk frequently occur together. To help identify high-risk adolescents, we analyzed a national, self-reported behavior survey of high school students to assess the suitability of fighting as a marker for students with multiple problem behaviors. METHODS: A cross-sectional cluster survey of 11,631 U.S. high school students in 1990 was used to compare the prevalence of recent problem behaviors among all students and those who fight. RESULTS: One (8%) of every 12 students was in a fight during the 30 days before the survey. Reported problem behaviors w

Lifetime and five-year prevalence of homelessness in the United States: new evidence on an old debate.

A 1990 household-based telephone survey of 1,507 people was followed up by surveying a subsample of those interviewed for the initial report. Results showed very high prevalence figures for homelessness, quite close to those found in the earlier survey. Moreover, using explicit and stringent definitions of literal homelessness and doubling up, most periods of homelessness were found to last for more than one month and, particularly with regard to literal homelessness, to involve serious deprivations and violent victimization.

Online digital recovery support services: An overview of the science and their potential to help individuals with substance use disorder during COVID-19 and beyond.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and related social distancing public health recommendations will have indirect consequences for individuals with current and remitted substance use disorder (SUD). Not only will stressors increase risk for symptom exacerbation and/or relapse, but individuals will also have limited service access during this critical time. Individuals with SUD are using free, online digital recovery support services (D-RSS) that leverage peer-to-peer connection (i.e., social-online D-RSS) which simultaneously help these individuals to access support and adhere to public health

Which good practice exists for policymaking under uncertainty? An interdisciplinary review with relevance for health technology assessment (HTA).

Appropriate policymaking under uncertainty can lead to better decisions around how constrained resources are used. Although approaches from the technical sciences can provide robust, generalisable uncertainty estimations, they cannot account for the varying social, economic, and cultural contexts in which policies are made and implemented. We evaluated current health technology assessment (HTA) practice, finding limited consideration of social science perspectives, which may be inadequate for policies that influence behaviour, cross jurisdictions, or deal with multiple vested interests. Building resilience to chronic pain during childhood: The Situate - Experience - Learn - Feel (SELF) Framework.

Chronic pain is a significant global public health problem affecting 1 in 4 adults and 1 in 5 young people. Despite the high prevalence of chronic pain, research into its prevention is scarce. In this review, we draw from current, interdisciplinary evidence to present a conceptual Situate - Experience - Learn - Feel (SELF) Framework that takes a developmental and biopsychosocial-societal approach to building children's resilience against future chronic pain. The SELF Framework considers the impact of one's Situation, including social and societal supports and structures, early life Experiences

Development and Validation of a Social Influence Scale for Antiviral Therapy Behavior of Patients with Chronic Hepatitis B.

PURPOSE: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a global health problem with widespread prevalence, yet treatment rates remain persistently low worldwide. Although the impact of social influence on health behaviors has been well confirmed and proven to play a prominent role, a standardized scale to measure its specific influence on treatment behavior among chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients is still lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a social influence scale to assess its role in patients' treatment decision-making. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The scale was developed through four st

Artificial intelligence systems distort upstream selection in human social learning.

Humans are social learners who depend on observing others to acquire knowledge, norms, and behaviors, a capacity that underlies cumulative cultural evolution. Social learning unfolds in two stages: upstream selection determines what information becomes visible, and downstream selection determines what learners copy from that visible sample. Downstream selection occurs through biases such as conformity bias (copying what appears common) and prestige bias (copying those who appear highly respected). These downstream biases can be adaptive when upstream selection yields a sample that reflects the

Escalating loneliness among Chinese American older adults in an affordable housing community: a repeat cross-sectional study (2012-2025).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Loneliness is a significant public health problem, particularly among older immigrant adults. The study investigates the temporality of changes in loneliness among Chinese American older adults living in affordable housing and factors influencing these changes within the context of broader societal transformations. RESEARCH AND METHODS: Using a repeated cross-sectional design, two independent cohorts of Chinese American older adults in the same affordable housing complex were surveyed in 2012 (N = 120) and in 2025 (N = 118). The analyses were conducted in three phas

Income inequality and comorbid overweight/obesity and depression among a large sample of Canadian secondary school students: The mediator effect of social cohesion.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid overweight/obesity (OWO) and depression is emerging as a public health problem among adolescents. Income inequality is a structural determinant of health that independently increases the risk for both OWO and depression among youth. However, no study has examined the association between income inequality and comorbid OWO and depression or tested potential mechanisms involved. We aimed to identify the association between income inequality and comorbid OWO and depression and to test whether social cohesion mediates this relationship. METHODS: We used data from the 2018-2019
