Atherosclerotic vascular disease and its correlates in stable black South African kidney transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Despite remarkable improvement in renal function attributable to kidney transplantation, the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) remains high in the post-transplant period. Aggressive use of statins in KTRs may make lipoprotein ratios correlate better with atherosclerotic vascular disease (AsVD) when compared with traditional lipid profile parameters. We therefore evaluated the clinical and echocardiographic correlates of AsVD among non-diabetic, stable, black KTRs in South Africa. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 41 adult (

Cognitive functioning of female nurses during the night shift: The impact of age, clock time, time awake and subjective sleepiness.

Decline in cognitive functioning in the workplace is a major concern for health care systems. Understanding factors associated with nighttime functioning is imperative for instituting organizational risk management policies and developing personalized countermeasures. The present study aims to identify individual factors associated with cognitive functioning during the night shift of hospital nurses working on irregular rotating-shift schedules. Ninety-two female nurses were recruited from 17 wards in two general hospitals, using convenience sampling by clusters. Inclusion criteria were workin

Analysis of potential categories of quality of life of transcatheter aortic valve replacement patients and discussion of their influencing factors.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of aortic valve stenosis is on the rise, primarily due to an aging population. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) has emerged as an effective treatment option, especially for patients at high surgical risk. However, the variation in post-TAVR quality of life across patient groups warrants further examination to understand the contributing factors. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the quality of life in patients post-TAVR, characterize distinct patient group profiles, and identify key factors that influence their quality of life. METHODS: From July

Generalized anxiety disorder, psychiatric comorbidities, and suicide.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested a positive association between generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and suicidal symptoms, particularly suicidal thoughts. Nevertheless, whether GAD is an independent risk factor for subsequent suicide is poorly understood. METHODS: Analyzing data on the entire Taiwanese population (N = 29,077,426), we followed 322,855 patients with GAD and 1,291,420 individuals without GAD matched for birth date and sex over the period from 2003 to 2017. Deaths by suicide were confirmed using Taiwan’s Database of All-cause Mortality. Psychiatric disorders comorbid with

Association between metabolic syndrome and risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia: a prospective cohort study of 163 975 participants.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified metabolic syndrome (MetS) as a risk factor for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, large-scale evidence remains to be established. This study aims to examine the association between MetS and the risk of incident BPH using large-scale cohort data, as well as the underlying biological mechanisms. METHODS: We used prospective cohort data from the UK Biobank, including 163 975 male participants. We applied Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the risk of BPH associated with MetS, adjusting for sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. A m

The impact of perceived injustice on pain and psychological outcomes after traumatic injury: a longitudinal analysis.

Individuals' appraisals regarding the injustice of their pain or physical injury have emerged as a significant risk factor for worse physical and psychological outcomes. Injustice appraisals are defined by perceptions of external blame for pain or injury and viewing pain or injury as a source of irreparable loss. To date, research on the impact of injustice appraisal has been primarily cross sectional, and existing longitudinal studies have examined injustice appraisals at only 2 time points in the context of rehabilitation treatment. This study examined the trajectory of injustice appraisals

Apolipoprotein ɛ4 Allele and Dental Occlusion Deficiency as Risk Factors for Alzheimer's Disease.

Compromised dentition has been suggested to pose a significant risk factor for dementia. It was mainly investigated through insufficient tooth number, disregarding contact between opposing teeth (dental occlusion). The ɛ4 allele of apolipoprotein (APOE4) is the primary genetic marker for the late onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, APOE4 and dental occlusion have not yet been investigated as possible associated risk factors for AD. The study was aimed to examine the impact of dental status and different APOE gene variants on AD occurrence. Secondly, sociodemographic variables were inve
