Repeated applications of municipal wastewater biosolids is cost effective for biosolids managers, but may lead to undesirable accumulations of nutrients or contaminants. We evaluated the effects of seven years of biosolids applications on tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) production and nutrient availability. We compared two types of Class A biosolids applied to tall fescue on a sandy loam in western Washington. Mean annual biosolids rates of 290, 580, and 870 kg total N ha(-1) yr(-1) were compared with inorganic N and zero-N controls using a randomized complete block design. We measur

Pesticide pollution of ground and surface water is of growing concern in tropical countries. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the leaching potential of eight pesticides in a Brazilian Oxisol. In a field experiment near Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, atrazine, chlorpyrifos, lambda-cyhalothrin, endosulfane alpha, metolachlor, monocrotofos, simazine, and trifluraline were applied onto a Typic Haplustox. Dissipation in the topsoil, mobility within the soil profile and leaching of pesticides were studied for a period of 28 days after application. The dissipation half-life of pesticides in th

Combined contamination of soils with antibiotics and heavy metals represents a growing environmental challenge, yet remediation strategies addressing their synergistic toxicity remain limited. In this study, the bioremediation potential of a tetracycline-degrading bacterial consortium (Raoultella sp. XY-1 and Pandoraea sp. XY-2) was evaluated in tetracycline-copper (TC-Cu) co-contaminated soils by integrating chemical, biological, and ecological assessments. Soil column experiments demonstrated that bioaugmentation significantly enhanced TC degradation (48.57-53.71% after 90 days) compared to

Organic matter management is key to sustain ecosystem services provided by soils. However, it is rarely considered in a holistic view, considering local resources, agro-environmental effects and harmonization with farmers' needs. Organic inputs, like compost and biochar, could represent a sustainable solution to massive current challenges associated to the intensification of agriculture, in particular for tropical regions. Here we assess the potential of agricultural residues as a resource for farmer communities in southwestern India to reduce their dependency on external inputs and sustain ec

The interplay between morphological specialization and kinematic flexibility is important for organisms that move between habitats within different substrates. Burrowing is energetically expensive and requires substantial interaction with soil to dislodge and transport it. True moles (Talpidae) have extraordinary forelimb morphologies and a unique ability to dig in loose as well as compact soils, yet we know little of how moles coordinate their forelimb joint kinematics when digging in soils of different compactness. Using marker-based X-ray Reconstruction of Moving Morphology (XROMM), we test

Endophytes play a crucial role in plant adaptation to environmental stress; however, their coordinated responses to heavy metal contamination remain insufficiently understood, particularly in medicinal plants. This study investigated the influence of metal-contaminated soils on the composition and structuring of endophytic communities associated with Catharanthus roseus, a pharmaceutically significant species. Plants were cultivated for 12 months in contaminated soil collected from an industrial site, Hindustan Shipyard Limited (Visakhapatnam, India), and in uncontaminated control soil from th

Korean Natural Farming (KNF) practices claim to cultivate and transfer "indigenous microorganisms (IMOs)" to donor soils as a method of probiotic soil enhancement. We investigated whether IMO cultivation can propagate unique microbiomes and maintain microbial diversity through successive IMO stages for restoration of flood contaminated soils. Employing a balanced study design using soil samples from salt marsh, deciduous forest, and urban greenspace (plus sterilized controls), samples underwent the first two IMO cultivation steps followed by 16S rRNA and ITS metagenomic sequencing. Notably, IM

The aim of this case study was the evaluation of the selected metals' concentration, potential toxic compound identification, cytotoxicity analysis, estimation of the airborne dust concentration, biodiversity, and number of microorganisms in the environment (leachate, soil, air) of the biggest uncontrolled post-industrial landfills in Poland. Based on the results obtained, preliminary solutions for the future management of post-industrial objects that have become an uncontrolled landfill were indicated. In the air, the PM1 fraction dominated, constituting 78.1-98.2% of the particulate matter.

A feasibility study is presented for a bioremediation intervention to restore agricultural activity in a field hit by a diesel oil spill from an oil pipeline. The analysis of the real contaminated soil was conducted following two approaches. The first concerned the assessment of the biodegradative capacity of the indigenous microbial community through laboratory-scale experimentation with different treatments (natural attenuation, landfarming, landfarming + bioaugmentation). The second consisted of testing the effectiveness of phytoremediation with three plant species: Zea mays (corn), Lupinus

Phosphorus (P) containing minerals are identified as effective Pb stabilizers in soil, while their low solubility limit the Pb immobilization efficiency. In this work, the combination of phosphate solubilizing fungi (PSF) Penicillium oxalicum and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) was constructed and applied to improve Pb immobilization stabilities in medium and soils. P. oxalicum+ TCP could significantly improve Pb2+ removal to above 99% under different TCP/Pb2+ and pH values. TCP and P. oxalicum could remarkably immobilize Pb by ion exchange, and PbC2O4 precipitation or surface adsorption, respectiv

Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) are highly prevalent Neglected Tropical Disease in Ethiopia, an estimated 26 million are infected. Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing (RS) technologies assist data mapping and analysis, and the prediction of the spatial distribution of infection in relation to environmental variables. The influence of socioeconomic, environmental and soil characteristics on hookworm infection at the individual and household level is explored in order to identify spatial patterns of infection in rural villages from Zenzelema (Amhara region). Balamuthia mandrillaris is a free-living amoeba that lives in soil and water near human settlements. B. mandrillaris was first isolated from a mandrill baboon that died at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Park in California in 1986, and the first human infection was reported in 1990. Although reported B. mandrillaris infections are often not properly characterized, it appears that B. mandrillaris invades the living body from the soil and water, either via a wound or the nasal cavity. Most confirmed infections have originated in South and North America. B. mandrillaris inhabits warm climates and is r

Effects of antibiotics on the transformation of nitrate and the associated N2O release in paddy fields are obscure. Using soil slurry experiments combined with 15N tracer techniques, the influence of tetracycline and sulfamethazine (applied alone and in combination) on the denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and N2O release rates in the paddy soil were investigated, while genes related to nitrate reduction and antibiotic resistance were quantified to explore the microbial mechanisms behind the antibiotics' effects. The pot

Water geochemistry data from complexly designed salt-solution injection experiments in the laboratory, coastal aquifers of Bangladesh and Italy, taken from the literature, and two salted watersheds of New Jersey, US were collected and analyzed to study the geochemical mechanisms that mobilize As, Pb, and Hg under varied salting conditions. Overall, increased NaCl-concentrations in aquifers and soil are found to increase the release of Pb and Hg into the water. Reducing environments and possible soil dispersion by hydrated Na(+) are found to lead to an increase of As-concentration in water. How

Kaschin-Beck disease (KBD), an endemic osteoarthropathy, is distributed in the low-selenium (Se)-belt that stretches from northeast to southwest China. However, very few studies have investigated the relationship between low bioavailabitity of Se and KBD. The present study examined the behavior of Se and other elements in areas with varying levels of KBD prevalence using pedological and geochemical methods. Rhizosphere soil samples obtained from the KBD-stricken Aba area were classified into Ustic Isohumisols (J2), Udic Luvisols (L4), Stagnic Gleysols (I2), and Cryic Cambisols (M1) and the int

Coccidioides immitis is a fungal human pathogen endemic to semiarid soils in southern California and Baja California (Mexico). Results of culture-dependent detection of C. immitis in the past indicated a spotty distribution and unreliable prediction of C. immitis growth sites and accumulation sites. In this project we investigated bulk soil samples for the presence of the pathogen in nonagricultural loamy soils at nine different locations around Bakersfield, Kern County, California, for almost 2 y (2008-2009). To detect the pathogen we used a multiplex PCR method with optimized soil handling a

A number of extraction methods have been developed to assess polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) bioavailability in soils. As these methods are rarely tested in a comparative manner, against different test organisms, and using field-contaminated soils, it is unclear which method gives the most accurate measure of the actual soil ecosystem exposure. In this study, PAH bioavailability was assessed in ten field-contaminated soils by using exhaustive acetone/hexane extractions, mild solvent (butanol) extractions, cyclodextrin extractions, and two passive sampling methods; solid phase micro extra

Stabilization of phosphorus (P) in sewage sludge (biosolids) to reduce water-soluble P concentrations is essential for minimizing P loss from amended soils and maximizing the capacity of the soil to safely serve as an outlet for this waste material. The chemical form at which P is retained in biosolids stabilized by Al(2)(SO(4))(3) x 18H(2)O (alum) or FeSO(4) x 7H(2)O (FeSul) was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray elemental spectrometry (EDXS) and by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Both treatments resulted in the formation of a Ca-P phase, probabl

Soil-borne fungal diseases are major constraints to the yield of legume crops, and it is therefore urgent to develop rapid and accurate detection methods for plant pathogens. In this study, a one-pot fluorescent detection system combining recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) with CRISPR/Cas12a was established for the rapid nucleic acid detection of Sclerotium rolfsii, the causal agent of soybean southern blight. The results demonstrated that the developed RPA-CRISPR/Cas12a one-pot assay could accurately identify the target pathogen within 45 minutes. The 95% limit of detection (LOD) was

Rare earth tailings soil retains high residual NH4+-N after in-situ leaching with ammonium sulfate, creating coupled risks of nitrogen loss and poor revegetation. The substrate and microbial pathways that reopen ammonia oxidation and mediate nitrification restart in this ammonium rich rare earth tailings soil remain unclear. To address this gap, a microcosm incubation over time compared an unamended soil, MgO, and manure, integrating nitrogen transformations, net mineralization, enzymes, qPCR, and shotgun metagenomics. Under OM, extractable NH4+-N declined by 88.3 % from its initial value, whi
