Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and anti-MRSA activities of extracts of some medicinal plants: A brief review.

The increasing emergence of multidrug-resistant infection causing microorganisms has become a significant burden globally. Despite the efforts of pharmaceuticals in producing relatively new antimicrobial drugs, they have resulted in a high rate of mortality, disability and diseases across the world especially in developing countries. Supporting this claim was the report of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who estimated that over 2 million illnesses and 23,000 deaths per year are attributable to antibiotic resistant pathogens in the United States. They include Methicillin-res

Comparison of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolates from Cellulitis and from Osteomyelitis in a Taiwan Hospital, 2016-2018.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) causes superficial infections such as cellulitis or invasive infections such as osteomyelitis; however, differences in MRSA isolates from cellulitis (CL-MRSA) and from osteomyelitis (OM-MRSA) at the same local area remain largely unknown. A total of 221 MRSA isolates including 106 CL-MRSA strains and 115 OM-MRSA strains were collected at Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan between 2016 and 2018, and their genotypic and phenotypic characteristics were compared. We found that OM-MRSA isolates significantly exhibited higher rates of resistance

Molecular Typing and Variations in Amount of tst Gene Expression of TSST-1-Producing Clinical Staphylococcus aureus Isolates.

The toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1), encoded by tst gene, has been proposed to cause staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome (TSS) in a susceptible host, which highlights the need to evaluate the level of tst gene expression and molecular genetic characteristics of the tst-positive isolates. A total of 916 S. aureus isolates collected from seven hospitals in China were screened for the tst gene. The tst positive isolates were characterized by spa, SCCmec, PFGE, and agr typing. Representative strains were also subjected to MLST typing. qRT-PCR was used to quantify tst and major virulence regu

Staphylococcus aureus colonization and risk of surgical site infection in children undergoing clean elective surgery: A cohort study.

Staphylococcus aureus persistently colonizes the skin and nasopharynx of approximately 20% to 30% of individuals, with the highest rates in younger children. To avoid clinical problems for carriers and the spread of S aureus to other hospitalized patients, screening and decolonization of carriers undergoing surgery has been recommended. However, the best approach to patients undergoing clean surgery is not precisely defined. To evaluate whether children carrying S aureus admitted to the hospital for clean elective surgery have an increased risk of postoperative surgical infections, 393 infants

Polyprodrug Antimicrobials: Remarkable Membrane Damage and Concurrent Drug Release to Combat Antibiotic Resistance of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

The increased threat of antibiotic resistance has created an urgent need for new strategies. Herein, polyprodrug antimicrobials are proposed to mimic antimicrobial peptides appended with a concurrent drug release property, exhibiting broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and especially high potency to inhibit methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) without inducing resistance. Two series of polyprodrug antimicrobials are fabricated by facile polymerization of triclosan prodrug monomer (TMA) and subsequent quaternization of hydrophilic poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAE

Novel purine benzimidazoles as antimicrobial agents by regulating ROS generation and targeting clinically resistant Staphylococcus aureus DNA groove.

A novel series of purine benzimidazole hybrids were designed and synthesized for the first time with the aim to circumvent the increasing antibiotic resistance. Hexyl appended hybrid 3c gave potent activities against most of the tested bacteria and fungi especially against multidrug-resistant strains Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 4 µg/mL). Structure-activity relationships revealed that the benzimidazole fragment at the 9-position of purine played an important role in exerting potentially antibacterial activity. Both cell toxicity and ROS generation assays indicated that the purine derivative 3c

Serious life-threatening multifocal infection in a child, caused by Panton-Valentine leucocidin-producing Staphylococcus aureus (PVL-MSSA).

Groin pain is a frequently occurring complaint in presentations to the Emergency Department. Muscular sprain is often a differential diagnosis, however serious conditions such as pyomyositis should not be ignored. This case report presents a child with atraumatic right groin pain, which was initially diagnosed as a muscular sprain. The patient later re-presented out of hours to the Emergency Department with what was found to be extensive pelvic abscesses. He was subsequently found to have bilateral pneumonia and later developed a pericardial effusion and osteomyelitis of the right iliac bone,

Sulfide Protects Staphylococcus aureus from Aminoglycoside Antibiotics but Cannot Be Regarded as a General Defense Mechanism against Antibiotics.

Sulfide production has been proposed to be a universal defense mechanism against antibiotics in bacteria (K. Shatalin, E. Shatalina, A. Mironov, and E. Nudler, Science 334:986-990, 2011, doi:10.1126/science.1209855). To gain insight into the mechanism underlying sulfide protection, we systematically and comparatively addressed the interference of sulfide with antibiotic activity against Staphylococcus aureus, as a model organism. The impact of sulfide and sulfide precursors on the antibiotic susceptibility of S. aureus to the most important classes of antibiotics was analyzed using modified di

From the wound to the bench: exoproteome interplay between wound-colonizing Staphylococcus aureus strains and co-existing bacteria.

Wound-colonizing microorganisms can form complex and dynamic polymicrobial communities where pathogens and commensals may co-exist, cooperate or compete with each other. The present study was aimed at identifying possible interactions between different bacteria isolated from the same chronic wound of a patient with the genetic blistering disease epidermolysis bullosa (EB). Specifically, this involved two different isolates of the human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus, and isolates of Bacillus thuringiensis and Klebsiella oxytoca. Particular focus was attributed to interactions of S. aureus with

[Intra-optic nerve and chiasmal abscess caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (a case report and literature review)].

A 27-year-old immunocompetent male with headache, transient polydipsia, and polyuria suddenly developed visual impairment (predominantly in the left eye) and, 2 days later, left-sided amaurosis. MRI in T1, T2, DWI, and FLAIR modes revealed a space-occupying lesion of the left intracranial optic nerve and chiasm. According to the clinical X-ray picture, malignant chiasmal glioma was suspected; another and less likely variant was lymphoma. An open biopsy of the space-occupying lesion of the chiasmal-sellar region revealed purulent-necrotic masses. Material from the operative wound was positive f
