Post-traumatic growth in young and middle-aged patients with stroke: a qualitative systematic review and meta-synthesis.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing incidence of stroke among young and middle-aged individuals, addressing their psychological well-being has become a critical concern. Negative emotional states such as depression, anxiety, and conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can hinder recovery and increase the risk of recurrence. Therefore, this study aims to conduct a meta-synthesis of qualitative research on post-traumatic growth (PTG) in this population, examining the factors that contribute to PTG, its developmental trajectory, and the coping mechanisms involved. METHODS: A systematic

Fear Learning and Memory in the Aging Brain: Neural Mechanisms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Risk and Resilience in Older Adults.

With a rapidly growing population of older adults worldwide, understanding how aging shapes mental and cognitive health is an urgent public health priority. Although older age has been considered protective against the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this pattern is far from universal. Emerging evidence indicates that older adults with a history of trauma may experience delayed-onset PTSD or a reemergence of symptoms after years of dormancy. In this review, we examine how age-related changes in the brain intersect with known PTSD mechanisms to influence trajectories of ris

Co-occurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and food addiction in a large Polish sample: latent profile analysis.

Background: Food addiction (FA) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are each associated with obesity and adverse psychological outcomes. The goal of this study was to generate symptom profiles based on varying levels of FA and PTSD symptoms. We hypothesised four profiles: PTSD + FA; PTSD; FA; healthy.Method: In a general Polish population (N = 2245), scores on PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), Lifetime Events Checklist (LEC), and Yale FA Scale (YFAS) were used as indicators in the latent profile analysis. Gender and Negative Urgency (SUPPS-P) were used as predictors of profile membership.

Cumulative childhood trauma and life satisfaction in men: The role of complex posttraumatic stress and its dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Cumulative childhood interpersonal trauma (CCIT) a represents an endemic phenomenon with lasting and harmful effects. However, male victimization remains overlooked and even taboo. Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD) is increasingly recognized as a crucial factor in understanding the long-term impact of CCIT on well-being. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the role of C-PTSD and its specific dimensions of symptoms in the relationship between CCIT and life satisfaction in a clinical sample of men seeking mental health services. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data were

Posttraumatic stress disorder treatment outcomes for events related to institutional betrayal.

Institutional betrayal can occur when an organization fails to prevent or respond appropriately to traumatic events perpetrated within its ranks. This experience of violated trust can exacerbate posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and related sequelae. The primary aim of this quality assurance project was to preliminarily assess whether our standard treatment approach and treatment dosing (single-treatment protocol, 12-15 sessions) was sufficient for patients presenting with institutional betrayal. We compared outcomes for individuals presenting for care following institutional betra

Beyond Adverse Childhood Experiences: What Should be Considered for Trauma-Focused Adolescent Mental Health Risk Assessments?

To align with emerging policies for adolescents, feasible, accurate, and equitable trauma-focused assessment protocols need to be developed. To date, most research on this topic has focused on whether traditional adverse childhood experiences (i.e., maltreatment, impaired caregiving) can adequately index mental health risk. Yet, there are noted clinical and statistical drawbacks to this approach. Instead, examining threat and reward biases, two subtypes of cognitive biases stemming from interpersonal trauma exposure, may provide a reasonable alternative to adversity screening. Thus, the aim of

Validation of the City Birth Trauma Scale to assess post-traumatic stress symptoms in maternity staff.

BACKGROUND: Each year, 295,000 women die from pregnancy or childbirth complications, with many more women and babies experiencing severe complications. Maternity staff are often exposed to these events and can develop post-traumatic stress symptoms or disorder (PTSD). However, there are currently no tools to specifically identify and assess birth-related PTSD in maternity staff. This study therefore adapted and validated the City Birth Trauma Scale (City BiTS) for this purpose. METHOD: The City BiTS (Maternity staff) was completed by 396 maternity health professionals recruited in three waves

Living under threat: adolescents' continuous traumatic stress reactions in relation to violence exposure.

Background: Adolescents exposed to violence are at a higher risk for mental health problems than their peers. Exposure to ongoing violence can potentially lead to Continuous Traumatic Stress (CTS). CTS reactions have never been studied in relation to violence exposure in adolescent samples. Objective: We aimed to validate the Lithuanian version of the Continuous Traumatic Stress Response (CTSR) scale in the adolescent sample, to explore the adolescents' CTS reactions using the person-oriented approach, and to study the relationship between different types of violence and CTS reactions.Method: I

Structural Covariance of Early Visual Cortex Is Negatively Associated With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms: A Mega-Analysis From the ENIGMA PTSD Working Group.

BACKGROUND: Identifying robust neural signatures of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms is important to facilitate precision psychiatry and help in understanding and treatment of the disorder. Emergent research suggests that the structural covariance of early visual regions is associated with later PTSD development. However, large-scale analyses are needed in heterogeneous samples of trauma-exposed and trauma-naïve individuals to determine whether such a neural signature is a robust marker of vulnerability. METHODS: We analyzed data from the ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics

CK2 negatively regulates the extinction of remote fear memory.

Cognitive behavioral therapy, rooted in exposure therapy, is currently the primary approach employed in the treatment of anxiety-related conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In laboratory settings, fear extinction in animals is a commonly employed technique to investigate exposure therapy; however, the precise mechanisms underlying fear extinction remain elusive. Casein kinase 2 (CK2), which regulates neuroplasticity via phosphorylation of its substrates, has a significant influence in various neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease,

Admiration and motivation: key factors in managing PTSD among firefighters.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) presents a significant challenge for firefighters. While research suggests that admiration may have a positive impact on individual psychological well-being, its specific influence on PTSD among firefighters remains unexplored. This study aims to investigate the association between admiration, motivation (both internal and external), and PTSD in a sample of 2156 firefighters in order to identify effective coping strategies for managing PTSD in this population. The findings indicate a statistically significant inverse relationship between admiration and PTS

Fifty Years After Nigerian Civil War: Social Support Is Associated with PTSD Symptoms Through Increased Self-Efficacy Among Biafran Veterans.

The Nigerian Civil War (or Nigerian-Biafran War, 1967-1970) was fought between the Nigerian federal government and the defunct Republic of Biafra. Biafra recruited young men and boys (child soldiers) to fight the war, but little attention has been given to understanding the mental health outcomes of the War on Biafran veterans. Although there are few studies on social support in relation to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in this older veteran population, the mechanism through which social support influences PTSD has not received much attention. Hence, we investigated whether se

Clinical potential of epigenetic and microRNA biomarkers in PTSD.

Molecular studies identifying alterations associated with PTSD have predominantly focused on candidate genes or conducted genome-wide analyses, often encountering issues with replicability. This review aims to identify robust bi-directional epigenetic and microRNA (miRNA) regulators focusing on their functional impacts on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and their utility in clinical diagnosis, whilst examining knowledge gaps in the existing research. A systematic search was conducted across multiple databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, Global Health (CABI), and PubMed, augmented

Lay-Led Intervention for War and Refugee Trauma: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: The global refugee crisis disproportionately affects the Muslim world. Forced displacement often results in trauma-related mental health issues. Effective psychotherapy exists, but there are barriers to uptake by refugee groups as well as a lack of culturally appropriate interventions. OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy of a brief, lay-led, mosque-based intervention, Islamic Trauma Healing (ITH), adapting empirically supported cognitive behavioral principles to improve mental health and well-being. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In a randomized clinical trial, 101 participant

Health and psychiatric impairment associated with moral injury, military sexual trauma, and their co-occurrence in U.S. combat veterans.

BACKGROUND: Military sexual trauma (MST) and moral injury (MI) are associated with adverse psychiatric and health outcomes among military veterans. However, no known population-based studies have examined the incremental burden associated with the co-occurrence of these experiences relative to either alone. METHOD: Cross-sectional data were analyzed from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, a nationally representative sample of 1330 U.S. combat veterans. Veterans reported on history of exposure to MST and potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs). Analyses estimated the li

Assessing shared psychological constructs as risk factors in comorbid PTSD-AUD combat-exposed male veterans.

PTSD and AUD are frequently comorbid post-trauma outcomes. Much remains unknown about shared risk factors as PTSD and AUD work tends to be conducted in isolation. We examined how self-report measures of distress tolerance (DT), experiential avoidance (EA), and drinking motives (DM) differed across diagnostic groups in white, male combat-exposed veterans (n = 77). A MANOVA indicated a significant difference in constructs by group, F (5, 210) = 4.7, p = <.001. Follow-up ANOVAs indicated DM subscales (Coping: F (3,82) = 21.3; Social: F (3,82) = 13.1; Enhancement: F (3,82) = 10.4; ps = <.001) and

The ripple effect of trauma: Evaluating vulnerability, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and aggression within a child and adolescent population.

BACKGROUND: The deleterious effects of experiencing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), especially those associated with child abuse and neglect (CM-ACEs), is well documented. Two common behavioral and emotional concerns observed in children following CM-ACEs is post-traumatic stress and aggression. While support for cognitive models explaining both of these outcomes exists, little is known about any shared cognitive vulnerabilities that may explain the presence of both. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the current study was to evaluate a cognitive model of vulnerability/safety as a shared underly
