OBJECTIVE: To find out the clinical and pathological characteristics in acute complicated appendicitis.
METHODS: A retrospective clinical analysis was made on 742 cases of acute appendicitis from January 2003 to December 2012. All cases underwent appendectomy. Patients were allocated to the acute complicated appendicitis (ACA) group and the acute uncomplicated appendicitis group based on pathological reports. The χ² test was used to check for differences between proportions. Multivariate analysis was made through the Logistic regression.

BACKGROUND: Actinomycosis is a rare suppurative disease that may mimic other inflammatory conditions on imaging. Its invasive nature may lead to mass formation and atypical presentation thus making accurate diagnosis quite difficult.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 14-year-old 8.2-kg (18.04-lb) castrated male Cairn Terrier with chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca in the left eye was evaluated because of severe blepharospasm and a black plaque of 3 weeks' duration.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Abnormalities of the left eye included a decreased Schirmer tear test value and the presence of a brownish-black plaque in the center of the cornea. The plaque was surrounded by fibrovascular tissue except at the medial aspect where there was mild malacia of the adjacent corneal stroma.
