Measurement of stapes footplate thickness in otosclerosis by ultra-high-resolution computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-high-resolution computed tomography (U-HRCT) utilizes a 1024 × 1024 matrix with 0.25-mm section thickness, offering better spatial resolution than conventional multi-detector row CT to detect anatomic data for otologic surgery. AIMS: We examined stapes footplate thickness using U-HRCT in relation to stapedotomy to predict the difficulty of the surgical procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects were 12 otosclerosis patients and 25 controls who underwent diagnostic U-HRCT. A profile curve (Hounsfield units) was used to measure stapes footplate thickness along a perpendicular

Reconstruction of cranioplasty using the thoracodorsal artery perforator (TDAP) flap: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Complex defects resulting in ablation of the scalp, the calvaria, the dura, and the underlying brain are still challenging. These defects require cranioplasty to restore the bone cosmetic and functional roles and free-flap soft tissue reconstruction to prevent cranioplasty exposure and further infection. Different materials have been used in cranioplasty, while different free flaps have been proposed in those cases. In this article, we present a case series of cranioplasty reconstruction with thoracodorsal artery perforator flap (TDAP). PATIENTS AND METHODS: From April 2016 to Jan

Differential gene expression in the condylar cartilage of growing rabbits with temporomandibular joint anterior disk displacement-A transcriptomic study.

Internal derangement (ID) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) comprises a group of clinical problems with relatively high prevalence. However, the temporal changes in gene expression of condylar cartilage during continuous ID remain unclear. The aim of the current study is to investigate by microarray analysis, the differentially-expressed gene pattern in condylar cartilage of rabbits with ID from one to eight weeks of ID progression. Histological results (hematoxylin and eosin staining) indicated that abnormal collagen fiber arrangements, fragmentation of fibrils, and inflammatory cell-infil

Usefulness of radiological findings for predicting cochlear implantation outcomes in children with cochlear nerve deficiency: a pilot study.

CONCLUSION: Children with CND received limited benefits from CIs and their results varied. The size of the vestibulocochlear nerve relative to the facial nerve could potentially be used as a predicator for CI outcomes in children with CND. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) retrospectively review the outcomes of cochlear implants (CIs) in children with cochlear nerve deficiency (CND) and (2) evaluate the clinical usefulness of radiological findings as predictors for post-implantation outcomes. METHODS: Study participants included 10 children with bilateral CND and profound sensorineural hear

Implant-retained auricular prostheses: a clinical challenge.

Microtia, malformation, deformity, and partial or complete loss of the pinna may be due to various congenital or acquired factors. In adult patients, surgical reconstruction of the missing pinna is difficult and the results are often far from satisfactory. An implant-retained auricular prosthesis is a suitable alternative. A retrospective study of eight patients treated with implant-retained auricular prostheses was performed. For each missing pinna, three titanium implants were placed in the temporal bone. After 6 months of osseointegration, the implants were loaded. Four cases were rehabilit

Development of a Novel Canine Model for Posttraumatic Osteoarthritis of the Knee.

Translational models of posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) that accurately represent clinical pathology need to be developed. This study assessed a novel canine model for PTOA using impact injury. Impacts were delivered to the medial femoral condyle of dogs using a custom-designed impactor at 20, 40, or 60 MPa. Functional assessments and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed at 2 and 12 weeks, and arthroscopic and histologic assessments were performed at 12 weeks after injury. At 2 and 12 weeks, dogs had observable lameness, knee pain, effusion, loss in range of motion (ROM) and dys

Long term follow up of two independent patients with Schinzel-Giedion carrying SETBP1 mutations.

Schinzel-Giedion syndrome (SGS, MIM #269150) is a rare syndrome characterized by severe intellectual disability, typical facial gestalt, hypertrichosis and multiple congenital malformations including skeletal, genitourinary, renal and cardiac abnormalities. The prognosis of SGS is very severe and death occurs generally within a few years after birth. In 2002, we reported 2 children with SGS with a follow-up of 3 years. They presented a very similar and particular phenotype associating distinctive facial gestalt, severe developmental delay, megacalycosis, progressive neurodegeneration, alacrimi

A comparison of tumor prosthesis implantation and pasteurized autograft-prosthesis composite for proximal tibial tumor.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although previous reports on composite biologic reconstruction in the proximal tibial location vary, we hypothesized that this type of reconstruction may reduce the late infection rate and have advantages in terms of longevity by restoring bone stock. METHODS: Primary analysis addressed differences between 62 tumor prosthesis (TP) and 25 pasteurized autograft-prosthesis composite (PPC) reconstructions in terms of survival rates, functional outcomes, and temporal patterns of infection. RESULTS: The 10-year survival rates of the TP and PPC groups were 73.9 ± 11.7 and

Cranial nerve injuries are associated with specific craniofacial fractures after blunt trauma.

Identification of cranial nerve (CN) injuries after blunt trauma is often delayed due to concomitant life-threatening trauma, altered mental status, and associated bony or soft tissue injuries. We hypothesized that specific craniofacial fracture (FX) patterns are associated with CN injuries, permitting earlier diagnosis. The trauma registry at a single institution was queried for all CN injuries and craniofacial FXs. Associations were determined by Fisher's exact test. Ninety CN injuries were identified in 59 patients. CN injuries were diagnosed on the day of admission in 24 (41%) patients. Th
