UNLABELLED: Human cortex is comprised of specialized networks that support functions, such as visual motion perception and language processing. How do genes and experience contribute to this specialization? Studies of plasticity offer unique insights into this question. In congenitally blind individuals, "visual" cortex responds to auditory and tactile stimuli. Remarkably, recent evidence suggests that occipital areas participate in language processing. We asked whether in blindness, occipital cortices: (1) develop domain-specific responses to language and (2) respond to a highly specialized a

Neuroimaging studies have shown that the visual cortex of visually impaired humans is active during tactile tasks. We sought to determine if this cross-modal activation in the primary visual cortex is correlated with vision loss in individuals with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), an inherited degenerative photoreceptor disease that progressively diminishes vision later in life. RP and sighted subjects completed three tactile tasks: a symmetry discrimination task, a Braille-dot counting task, and a sandpaper roughness discrimination task. We measured tactile-evoked blood oxygenation level dependent

PURPOSE: To assess the long-term functional and clinical outcomes of patients who have undergone replantation after radiocarpal amputation.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of radiocarpal joint amputations at a level 1 trauma center over a 13-year period. Medical records of patients treated with replantation were queried for injury data, operative reports, complications, and clinical progress. Patients who met inclusion criteria were contacted for long-term follow-up. We measured total active motion of each digit, strength (grip and pinch), and 2-point discrimination. Functional o

The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of cervical dentin hypersensitivity in a cross-sectional investigation of Greek adults. Seven hundred and sixty-seven subjects were examined. Participants were patients processed for first examination in the Clinic of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Athens. The evaluation of hypersensitivity was performed using two methods: for each tooth, the response to a) tactile stimulus and b) air-blast stimulus was measured. Additional factors such as smoking habits, oral health behaviour, consumption of acid

Next to neurogenic inflammation and pathological sympathetic-afferent coupling, functional imaging studies have shown the crucial role of maladaptive cortical reorgansation in the pathophysiology of CRPS. Bilateral neuroplastic alterations in the somatosensory cortex seem to play a substantial role in the dysfunctional sensory processing of stimuli. The aim was to investigate the multimodal integration of sensory and visual stimuli into the body scheme and the influence of higher cognitive body representation in the integration of multimodal schema, body relevant stimuli in patients with CRPS.

OBJECTIVE: To test the tactile spatial resolution in chronic unilateral brain lesions. Additionally, since sensory deficits are thought to have an impact on motor deficits, this study investigated the correlation between tactile spatial resolution and finger dexterity.
DESIGN: Descriptive cross-sectional study.
PATIENTS: Twenty-two patients with unilateral brain lesions (12 children with congenital hemiplegia and 10 patients after stroke).
METHODS: Tactile spatial resolution was measured with a grating orientation task, and finger dexterity with the Purdue Pegboard Test.
RESULTS: Major tac

Neurophysiological and behavioral studies suggest that the peripersonal space is represented in a multisensory fashion by integrating stimuli of different modalities. We developed a neural network to simulate the visual-tactile representation of the peripersonal space around the right and left hands. The model is composed of two networks (one per hemisphere), each with three areas of neurons: two are unimodal (visual and tactile) and communicate by synaptic connections with a third downstream multimodal (visual-tactile) area. The hemispheres are interconnected by inhibitory synapses. We applie

Our purpose was to identify the effect of diminished plantar cutaneous sensation on time-to-boundary (TTB) measures of postural control during double and single limb quiet standing. Thirty-two healthy young adults underwent 10 min of ice immersion of the plantar aspect of the feet prior to balance testing. On a different day, the subjects did not receive this intervention prior to testing. A 2 x 2 vision (eyes open, eyes closed) by sensation (control, hypoesthesia) repeated measures design was used to analyze the TTB measures. In double limb stance, there were significant interactions between

Similarly to sighted people, individuals congenitally affected by a severe visual impairment can maintain and mentally manipulate spatial information about tactile stimuli [Vecchi, T., Cattaneo, Z., Monegato, M., Pece, A., Cornoldi, C., Pietrini, P., 2006. Why Cyclops could not compete with Ulysses: monocular vision and mental images. NeuroReport 17, 723-726]. The aim of the present study was to assess whether the onset timing of a severe (but not total) sight loss may influence spatial imagery abilities based on haptic input. To this purpose, a group of late severe visually impaired people an

BACKGROUND: Auditory hallucinations and passivity experiences are associated with an abnormality in the self-monitoring mechanism that normally allows us to distinguish self-produced from externally produced sensations. It is unclear if chronic central pain disorders such as fibromyalgia and somatoform pain disorders also involve a defect of the self-monitoring mechanism.
METHODS: Responses to tactile stimulation were assessed in four groups of subjects (N = 40): patients with fibromyalgia, patients with somatoform pain disorder, patients with schizophrenia with auditory hallucinations and/or

The flexion reflex can be elicited via stimulation of skin, muscle, and high-threshold afferents inducing a generalized flexion of the limb. In spinalized animal models this reflex is quite prominent and is strongly modulated by actions of hip proprioceptors. However, analogous actions on the flexion reflex in spinal cord injured (SCI) humans have not yet been examined. In this study, we investigated the effects of imposed static hip angle changes on the flexion reflex in ten motor incomplete SCI subjects when input from plantar cutaneous mechanoreceptors was also present. Flexion reflexes wer

We used a kinematic analysis for assessing locomotor impairments and evaluating the time course of recovery after focal injury to the forepaw area of the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) in rats. The animals were trained to traverse a beam that was rotated at various speeds. Changes in orientation of the body and independent movement of the anterior and posterior parts of the body were reconstructed using a 3D motion analysis. In addition, we used electrophysiological cortical mapping to search for neurophysiological changes within the spared cortical zones surrounding the lesion. Neuronal re

The primary somatosensory cortex (S1) in adult animals and humans is capable of rapid modification after deafferentation. These plastic changes may account for a loss of tonic control by nociceptive inputs over inhibitory mechanisms within structures of the dorsal column-medial lemniscal system. Most studies, however, have been performed under conditions where deafferentation of C and A delta fibres coexists with large-diameter fibres deafferentation. In this study the effect of the acute lesion of one ascending anterior lateral column on neuronal activity within the dorsal column-medial lemni

Severity-correlated enlargement of the median nerve occurs in idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We determined whether measurement of the nerve cross-sectional area was useful in making the diagnosis of CTS. In 414 wrists of 275 patients with clinically diagnosed idiopathic CTS and 408 wrists of 408 controls, we made ultrasonographic measurements of the nerve area at the distal (distal edge of the flexor retinaculum), mid (hook of the hamate), and proximal carpal tunnel (wrist crease). Criteria based on the area at a single level yielded sensitivities of 43-57% and specificities of 96-97

The activity of single myelinated afferents was recorded from dorsal roots L4-5 in normal Sprague-Dawley rats and animals that developed mechanical hypersensitivity following ischemic injury to the sciatic nerve. The mechanical response properties and conduction velocity of afferents conducting through the injury site (about 50% of units) were similar to controls. However, the majority of afferents not conducting through the injury site exhibited ongoing activity. The results suggest that mechanical allodynia may be at least partly due to the central integration of activity arising from these

The use of excessive brushing force has been shown to be a major cause of gingival abrasion. To aid in preventing over-vigorous brushing, the Philips/Jordan electric toothbrush incorporates a Controlled Pressure system (CPS) that causes the brush head to flex back when a toothbrushing force (TBF) in excess of a pre-determined threshold is exerted against the teeth or soft tissues. Two studies (I/II) were conducted to determine whether this mechanical feedback system is sufficiently sensitive to enable users to control their brushing behavior. In Study I, the learning pattern of brushing behavi

Three patients with traumatic amputation of the thumb at the metacarpophalangeal joint level underwent a two-stage reconstruction aimed at fixation of a thumb prosthesis to the first metacarpal bone via an osseointegrated titanium fixture. The first stage included insertion of the fixture into the medullary cavity of the first metacarpal bone in combination with transplantation of cancellous bone from the iliac crest. After 3 months, when the fixture was firmly osseointegrated into the bone, a skin-penetrating abutment was placed on top of the fixture, the surrounding skin being thinned to the

Interhemispheric transfer of haptic information was examined in six partially callosotomized patients and three control subjects. Three different portions of the trunk were severed in different subjects. The most anterior 10 mm of the trunk, anterior to the foramen of Monro, was sectioned in one patient. Three other patients had lesions restricted to the anterior part of the trunk posterior to the foramen of Monro. The posterior third of the trunk was damaged in two patients. The splenium, genu and rostrum of the corpus callosum were intact in all six patients, as were the anterior and hippoca

BACKGROUND: Oral and dental health education is typically delivered using visual methods on jaw models. However, these methods are insufficient for individuals with visual impairments. This study aims to contribute to the oral and dental health of visually impaired adult individuals through specially designed educational methods incorporating audio guidance, Braille, and tactile models. The objectives of the study are to assess the oral health profile of visually impaired individuals, to develop an oral and dental health education model using tactile and auditory materials, to improve oral hea
