The antigenic specificities of cutaneous anaphylactic reactions in guinea-pigs passively sensitized by intravenous administration of rabbit anti-benzylpenicillin (PG) sera were studied. Haptenic specificity of these reactions was found to be directed to the benzylpenicilloyl (BPO) haptenic group, and no evidence of specificity toward other possible haptenic determinants related to PG (i.e. benzylpenicillenic acid and D-penicillamine groups) was found. Specificity was mainly for the α-diastereoisomeric-BPO group, but also to one or more of the other possible diastereoisomers of BPO. Data were o

Guanethidine, 0.75 to 1.25 mg. per kg. per day, was found to alleviate the pruritus of acute atopic dermatitis in 19 out of 20 patients. It was not effective in patients with other dermatoses. An apparent partial tolerance to this treatment developed in six out of 10 patients re-treated. It had little or no therapeutic effect in 10 patients with a variety of other pruritic dermatoses, suggesting that this drug has a specific antipruritic action in patients with atopic dermatitis. In a double-blind study, 11 of 12 patients with atopic dermatitis treated with guanethidine experienced relief of p

Tannic acid contained in the barium enema was found to have been the sole known potential hepatotoxin in four of the five cases of fulminating fatal liver failure that occurred in a 213-bed hospital over a period of 27 months. In the other case halothane anesthesia had also been administered. Autopsies (performed on four of the cases) did not suggest viral hepatitis but showed substantially indentical hepatic changes, not unlike those reported in the past following tannic acid exposure. Proof is not claimed that tannic acid was the cause of these deaths, but further investigation regarding the
