OBJECTIVE: To assess the short- and long-term dentoskeletal effects of early Class III treatment with rapid maxillary expansion and facemask (RME/FM) followed by fixed appliances.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 44 patients (27 females, 17 males) treated consecutively with RME/FM were included from the archives of 3 centres. Three lateral cephalograms were available: T0 (before the start of RME/FM therapy, mean age 8.1 ± 1.8 years), T1 (immediately after RME/FM, mean age 9.8 ± 1.6 years), and T2 (long-term observation, mean age 19.5 ± 1.6 years). A control group of 17 untreated Class III su

OBJECTIVE: To assist urologists in the management of andrological and sexual medicine pathologies during the COVID-19 crisis.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Use of the formalized consensus method.
RESULTS: The medical and surgical management of patients in andrology and sexual medicine must be adapted. Consultations should, as far as possible, be carried out by tele-consultation. For operative procedures, the delay between the operative decision and the date of (re)scheduling of the procedure will depend on: (1) the level of criticality of the clinical situation; (2) the type of intervention; (3) the

Maxillary protraction headgear with dental anchorage is commonly used in the treatment of class III malocclusion, but this treatment has been shown to have certain undesirable effects such as the loss of dental anchorage. These side effects can be reduced with the use of skeletal anchorage such as miniplates, mini screws and implants. This case report describes an orthopaedic treatment performed on a 10-year-old boy presenting a class III malocclusion with maxillary hypoplasia, for which a 10-month first phase of maxillary protraction was realised with zygomatic miniplates used as a skeletal a

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of orthodontic non-extraction treatment with or without headgear on the position of and the space available for upper third molars in growing children with class II malocclusions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of pre- and post-treatment panoramic radiographs and lateral cephalograms of 294 class II orthodontic patients; 160 were treated with headgear and 134 were treated without headgear. The space available for the upper third molar was measured on the lateral cephalogram as the distance from pterygoid vertical (PTV) to the distal surface

Introduction Abnormalities of the bony pelvis in exstrophy-epispadias complex (EEC) and their possible relation to hip disease are well described. However, there is a lack of information about long-term orthopedic consequences and hip function in patients with EEC. Therefore, we investigated clinical and radiological results in an EEC patient cohort after long-term follow-up. Patients and Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study using standardized radiography, clinical investigation, and the Harris hip score. Seventeen postpuberty consecutive unselected EEC patients (3 female, 14 male; mea

Laryngeal and esophageal laxity resulting from a connective tissue disease can lead to severe pain and functional impairment. This clinical report describes a patient with such significant neck pain that it prevented her from speaking; it also caused pain with deglutition. Maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation with an external laryngeal and esophageal support significantly reduced the patient's pain and restored normal speaking and deglutition functions. This clinical report describes the design and fabrication of a support to stabilize the patient's laryngeal and esophageal structures to he

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel radiographic sign ("halo") and a new classification method of an evolving perisigmoid epidural abscess and present its correlation with intraoperative findings.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective and prospective cohort study in a tertiary academic children's hospital.
METHODS: The retrospective arm (15 children) was conducted between 1998 and 2007 and the prospective arm (11 children) between 2008 and 2013. The computerized tomographic appearance of the perisigmoid region was classified into four groups: Class I, normal; Class II, smooth halo; Class III, nodular halo

PURPOSE: Reduction and intramedullary fixation of subtrochanteric fractures is often challenging. Osteosynthesis frequently fails and a higher rate of non-unions is found. The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefit of an additional cerclage to anatomically reduce and support the medial hinge. The application is based on the experience of the surgeon; as yet no biomechanical data are available.
METHODS: Ten pairs of human cadaveric femora were used to determine the biomechanical and clinical advantage of an additional cerclage. All femora were tested in a materials testing system after

The aim of this research was to evaluate, within a controlled clinical study, the effects of a Delaire-type facemask or a modified Jasper Jumper (JJ) used in the treatment of children with Class III malocclusions due to maxillary retrognathia on temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Forty-six patients with Class III malocclusions referred for orthodontic treatment were divided into two groups, a test and a control. The test group comprised 33 randomly chosen patients (15 females, 18 males) aged 8-11 years. The control group included 13 patients (eight females, five males) with similar features.

AIM: This study was carried out to investigate the effects of protractive face mask on maxillary retrusion in 2 groups of patients.
METHODS: Two groups each consisting of 10 male patients participated in the present study. The first group had skeletal Class III malocclusions due to maxillary underdevelopment, while the second group had (corrected) unilateral cleft lips and palates on the left side. The subjects' ages ranged from 5 to 8 years, and the treatment was applied with face mask for 1 year. Pre- and posttreatment lateral cephalometric films were compared.
RESULTS: The results reveale

INTRODUCTION: Our aim in this study was to evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in Class III patients treated with mandibular cervical headgear (MCH) and fixed appliances.
METHODS: The sample of 75 patients included 25 patients with no previous orthodontic treatment, 25 Class I patients who had undergone orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances and without extractions, and 25 patients with dentoskeletal Class III disharmonies treated with MCH and fixed appliances. The Helkimo index was used to test the prevalence of TMD symptoms in the 3 groups. The prevalence rates

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Screening of newborn infants for congenital hip dysplasia may be done by clinical examination, ultrasound, or radiography--or a combination of these. Studies that have used clinical examination followed by ultrasound imaging for infants with certain risk factors have shown excellent results, but they were performed by very experienced practitioners. We wanted to find out whether the results of such screening would be equally good with less optimal staffing. Thus, we evaluated the real-life performance of a screening program for detection of congenital hip dysplasia in n

We present a case of atlantoaxial rotary subluxation after a minor injury managed by manual reduction under sedation. Atlantoaxial rotary subluxation should be considered in a child with inability or unwillingness to turn their head when history and physical examination do not suggest torticollis of benign etiology. In our discussion, we review etiology, diagnosis, as well as pre- and in-hospital management.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study was performed to identify horizontal fractures of the body of the axis, with special attention to their pattern, prevalence, and clinical outcome.
OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of this type of injury and the long-term clinical behavior are examined.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although isolated cases have been reported, horizontal Chance-type fractures of the body of the axis are not common cervical spine injuries.
METHODS: The medical records of 674 consecutive patients with fractures of the cervical spine admitted to the authors' institute from 1970 to 2002

Orthodontics has the potential to cause significant damage to hard and soft tissues. The most important aspect of orthodontic care is to have an extremely high standard of oral hygiene before and during orthodontic treatment. It is also essential that any carious lesions are dealt with before any active treatment starts. Root resorption is a common complication during orthodontic treatment but there is some evidence that once appliances are removed this resorption stops. Some of the risk pointers for root resorption are summarised. Soft tissue damage includes that caused by archwires but also
