Metabolomic Signatures of Spontaneous Isolated Superior Mesenteric Artery Dissection: Indole Derivatives and Lysophospholipids as Novel Biomarkers.

Spontaneous isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection (SISMAD) is a rare but increasingly recognized vascular disorder that can lead to intestinal dysfunction with severe complications. Currently, no plasma biomarkers, particularly metabolomics-based markers, have been identified for SISMAD. To identify novel plasma biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets for SISMAD and its associated intestinal dysfunction, we analyzed plasma samples from 30 patients with SISMAD and 30 healthy controls. Blood was collected within 72 h of diagnosis. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography couple

Sensitive electrochemical sensor for selective detection of chiral amino acids based on covalent organic framework-cyclodextrin-gold nanocomposite.

BACKGROUND: Development of chiral sensors for determining amino acid enantiomers is an important topic in the biosensing field. However, the inherent non-electroactivity or weak electroactivity of many chiral amino acids poses a fundamental challenge for direct electrochemical detection, necessitating alternative transduction strategies. In this work we developed a sensitive electrochemical sensor for selective detection of chiral amino acids based on covalent organic framework-cyclodextrin-gold nanocomposite. RESULTS: In this work, a novel electrochemical chiral sensor was designed for the d

The Interactions Between Circadian Rhythm, Gut Microbiota, and Anxiety: From Mechanisms to Intervention Strategies.

The circadian rhythm is an internal timing system formed by the body's adaptation to the Earth's rotation, which helps maintain homeostasis by regulating physiological, metabolic, and behavioral activities. The gut microbiota (GM), the largest microbial ecosystem in the human body, exhibits a bidirectional regulatory relationship with the host circadian clock. Emerging evidence indicates that circadian rhythm disruption (CRD) is linked to disturbances in the diurnal oscillations and compositional balance of the GM, accompanied by reduced short-chain fatty acid levels, increased lipopolysacchar

Harnessing a marine-derived Rhodococcus strain for cross-habitat bioaugmentation of malodorant skatole: Performance and ecological response.

Skatole, primarily generated via the anaerobic metabolism of tryptophan, is a pervasive nitrogenous heterocyclic malodorant. While ubiquitous in various environments, its microbial remediation in saline ecosystems remains poorly documented. In this study, a skatole-degrading microbial consortium was enriched from marine sediments. High-throughput sequencing revealed distinct successional dynamics during domestication, with Pseudomonas becoming predominant (89.23%) and Rhodococcus persisting as a potential functional taxon (1.98%). An efficient isolate, Rhodococcus sp. SJ-2, was successfully ob

Multidimensional regulatory mechanisms and targeted intervention strategies of the gut-joint axis in metabolic osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is increasingly recognized as a heterogeneous disease driven not only by mechanical overload but also by systemic metabolic and inflammatory disturbances, among which metabolic osteoarthritis (Met OA) represents a distinct and highly prevalent subtype. Met OA is closely associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome, yet the underlying molecular and immunometabolic mechanisms remain incompletely defined. Emerging evidence supports a pivotal role of the gut-joint axis, whereby gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis and its metabolites reshape intestinal barrier i

Melatonin Attenuates Cadmium-Induced Oxidative Stress in Potato by Remodeling Redox Homeostasis and Activating Multi-Pathway Antioxidant Networks.

Cadmium pollution severely suppresses potato growth, impairs photosynthesis, and disrupts cellular redox balance, threatening crop yield and food safety. Exogenous small-molecule regulators represent low-cost strategies to alleviate heavy-metal phytotoxicity, yet systematic comparisons of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), L-tryptophan (Trp), and melatonin (MT) on Cd-stressed potatoes remain insufficient. In this study, two rounds of concentration-gradient screening using morphological and physiological assays identified 5 μM of melatonin as the optimal treatment to alleviate cadmium-induced damage in

The Microbiota Metabolite-Joint Axis: Mechanistic Insights and Therapeutic Targets for Osteoarthritis.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease globally, with its pathogenesis yet to be fully elucidated. Accumulating evidence has redefined OA as a systemic low-grade inflammatory disorder. While the gut microbiota-joint axis is widely recognized as a key regulatory pathway in OA progression, a definitive causal and mechanistic framework linking microbiota-derived metabolites to OA pathology has not yet been established. Aim of Review: This review aims to comprehensively evaluate the roles of microbiota-derived metabolites in OA pathogenesis by integrating cut

Occupational heat exposure, nighttime warming, and eGFR loss in petrochemical workers: a retrospective cohort study with metabolomic evidence.

Under the context of climate warming, whether rising nighttime temperatures modify heat-related kidney risks among industrial workers remains unclear. This retrospective cohort study included 2148 petrochemical workers in southeastern China followed from 2013 to 2022. Occupational heat exposure was assessed using the wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) index based on workplace monitoring records, and eGFR loss was defined as a ≥30% reduction in estimated glomerular filtration rate from baseline. Nighttime temperature was derived from ERA5-Land hourly temperature data (20:00-07:00). Cox proportio

The Gut-Lung Microbiome Crosstalk and Pulmonary Disease.

Both the gut and the lungs possess a microbiome, a community of commensal bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses that perform important housekeeping functions in those organs. The colonic microbiome primarily ferments indigestible dietary fibers into essential short-chain fatty acids, synthesizes essential vitamins, regulates the mucosal immune system, and forms a protective barrier against pathogenic colonization. The lung microbiome maintains respiratory health primarily by regulating mucosal immunity, providing a physical barrier against invading pathogens, and producing beneficial metabolit

Translating microbial dysbiosis into brain health interventions: a focus on the oral-gut-reproductive inflammatory pathways.

Alterations in the microbial communities along the oral, gut, and reproductive (OGR) axis are increasingly recognized as major contributors to systemic inflammation, endocrine dysregulation, and neuroimmune pathophysiology. Scientific evidence has demonstrated that OGR dysbiosis is associated with neuroimmune signaling potentially by the leakage of lipopolysaccharides and cytokine cascades, with associated disruption of blood-brain barrier integrity, degeneration of the neurovascular unit, dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and disruption of neurotransmitter balance via

Neonatal gut Bifidobacterium associates with indole-3-lactic acid levels in blood and risk of ADHD at age 10.

The gut microbiome has been associated with brain health. The neuromodulatory effects of microbial-derived metabolites is supported by experimental evidence, and alterations of gut microbiota have been associated with the pathophysiology of certain neuropsychiatric disorders.Research on the gut microbiome's role in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been predominantly cross-sectional and seldomly within the neonatal period, missing its potential impact on critical periods shaping long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. This study addresses how initial colonization and timing o

Targeted CSF metabolomics and conformal prediction improve diagnostic accuracy of normal pressure hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a progressive but treatable neurological disorder. Yet, diagnosis is often confounded by overlapping symptoms and biomarker profiles with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). We aimed to determine whether cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) metabolomic profiling, combined with uncertainty-aware machine learning using conformal prediction (CP), could improve diagnostic differentiation of iNPH. METHODS: CSF samples were collected from 120 patients with iNPH, 44 healthy con

Targeting Nrf2 in oxidative liver injury: expanding the role of gut microbiota and metabolites.

BACKGROUND: Liver diseases are a major cause of illness and death worldwide. Oxidative stress is a pivotal driver in the pathogenesis of a spectrum of liver diseases, including alcoholic liver disease (ALD), metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), drug-induced liver injury (DILI), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The transcription factor Nrf2, a master regulator of cellular antioxidant responses, plays a central yet context-dependent role in modulating this injury. Additionally, the gut-liver axis is a critical regulator of hepatic homeostasis. AIM OF REVIEW: This rev

The Gut-Skin Axis in Atopic Dermatitis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Mechanisms, Microbiota, and Therapeutic Implications.

The gut-skin axis is a bidirectional communication network linking the gastrointestinal tract, skin, microbiota, and immune system. As major barrier organs, the gut and skin harbor complex microbial communities that contribute to tissue homeostasis, immune regulation, and protection from environmental insults. Increasing evidence indicates that dysbiosis of the gut and skin microbiota is associated with inflammatory diseases through interconnected microbial, metabolic, and immune pathways. Clinical observations further reveal strong associations between gastrointestinal disorders, including in

The neurobiotic sense: emerging pathways of microbial detection and gut-brain communication.

The gut microbiota, a complex community of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microorganisms, plays a critical role in regulating host physiology through the gut-brain axis. The gut microbiota interacts with the central nervous system through a range of interconnected pathways. These include humoral signaling, immune-related mechanisms, sensory afferent pathways, and the modulation of enteric neural circuits. Recent research has uncovered specialized epithelial sensory cells, like neuropod cells, that can directly detect microbial molecules and send signals via vagal afferents. This discovery

Urinary Hypaphorine as a Candidate Marker of FFQ-Derived Legume Intake Within the EAT-Lancet Framework in Free-Living Adults.

Dietary assessment is affected by recall, reporting, portion-size error, and food-composition inconsistencies. Hypaphorine, a tryptophan-derived betaine alkaloid found in pulses and other foods, has been proposed as a marker of legume exposure, but its performance in free-living populations remains uncertain. In this cross-sectional study of 138 adults, dietary intake was assessed by food-frequency questionnaire, and legume intake was represented by an FFQ-derived variable within the EAT-Lancet food-group framework. Urinary hypaphorine was quantified by targeted hydrophilic-interaction liquid

The gut microbiota mediates depression-like behaviors in mice with chronic Echinococcus multilocularis infection.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), a chronic parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus multilocularis (E. multilocularis), remains poorly characterized with respect to central nervous system (CNS) involvement, and its long-term effects on mental health have not been systematically investigated. In this study, we established a BALB/c mouse model of chronic E. multilocularis infection and applied an integrative framework combining behavioral assessments, histomorphological analyses (hematoxylin-eosin staining, Nissl staining, and transmission electron microscopy), cytometric bead array (CBA), and mult
