Global mobility flows and COVID-19 spread in Europe during the emergency phase: Insights from Meta-Facebook data.

Human mobility within and between localities is a key determinant influencing the spatio-temporal spread of epidemic diseases. To investigate the role of the global mobility flows in shaping the cross-border transmission of COVID-19 in 30 EU/EEA countries, we analyzed individual mobility from Facebook Travel Patterns and integrated it into a multivariate endemic-epidemic model with fixed and random effects. The models were applied to country-specific surveillance data of weekly reported COVID-19 cases from 23 March 2020 to 18 December 2022. Additional datasets were also considered, such as the

Projecting excess mortality due to infectious diseases during a crisis: methods and application to the Gaza Strip, 2023-2024.

Excess mortality is a key consequence of crises due to armed conflicts and natural disasters. Israel's campaign in the Gaza Strip has exposed people to multiple risk factors for increased infectious disease burden. We developed a novel method for forward-projecting mortality due to both endemic and epidemic-prone infections in Gaza between 7 October 2023 and 6 August 2024. After defining alternative crisis scenarios, we used expert elicitation to quantify the probability of specific epidemics and increases in transmissibility and case fatality. We analysed past vaccination coverage and natural

High Burden of Hepatitis B Virus and Occult Infection Among HIV-Positive Adults and Pregnant Women in Southwest Cameroon.

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Occult HBV infection (OBI) remain a health burden in sub-Saharan Africa. This study investigated HBV prevalence, circulating genotypes, and associated risk factors with HBV exposure among HIV-positive adults on antiretroviral therapy and pregnant women in southwestern Cameroon. A total of 233 HIV patients and 190 third-trimester pregnant women were screened for HBV DNA, viral load, serological markers (HBsAg, anti-HBc, and anti-HBs), and HBV genotypes were determined by partial sequencing of the S gene. HBV DNA was detected in 10% of HIV-positive patients an

Seroprevalence of measles antibodies in the Italian general population in 2019-2020.

In Italy, the measles elimination target has not yet been reached despite a significant reduction in cases. A multicenter study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of anti-measles (MV) IgG antibodies in the Italian population by age, sex and geographical area. To determine the level of MV-specific antibodies in sera, the immunoenzymatic assay ELISA was used (Enzygnost Anti-VZV/IgG, Siemens Healthcare Diagnostic Products GmbH, Germany). Overall, 3746 serum samples collected in the years 2019-20 from healthy subjects aged 6-64 years residing in 13 Italian regions. The overall seroprevalence

Mortality associated with Omicron and influenza infections in France before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For many deaths associated with influenza and Omicron infections, those viruses are not detected. We applied previously developed methodology to estimate the contribution of influenza and Omicron infections to all-cause mortality in France for the 2014-2015 through the 2018-2019 influenza seasons, and the period between week 33, 2022 and week 12, 2023. For the 2014-2015 through the 2018-2019 seasons, influenza was associated with annual average of 15,654 (95% CI (13,013, 18,340)) deaths, while between week 33, 2022 and week 12, 2023, we estimated 7,851 (5,213, 10,463) influenza-associated deat

Atypical monkeypox presentation in a previously vaccinated MSM HIV-positive adult.

The outbreak of monkeypox virus (MPXV) in non-endemic countries is an international public health emergency, and the diversity in manifestations poses challenges for early diagnosis and isolation. We describe an atypical case of monkeypox (MPX) in a 46-year-old homosexual male living with HIV. He reported 1-day duration fever, a lesion on his chin that, over a period of 18 days, had gradually enlarged and ulcerated. Biopsy examination performed at an external centre revealed pyoderma gangrenosum, unconfirmed at a subsequent biopsy. When he reported to our hospital outpatients' clinic the chin

Mosquito Fauna and Spatial Distribution in an Atlantic Forest Area in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, Reveal a High Risk of Transmission of Yellow Fever and Other Arboviruses.

In 2017-2019, Brazil recorded its most severe outbreak of yellow fever due to the spread of the virus (YFV) in the country's southeast. Here, we investigated mosquito fauna and the spatial distribution of species in a primatology center in the Atlantic Forest bioregion in Rio de Janeiro state to evaluate the risk of YFV transmission in distinct environments. Fortnightly mosquito collections were performed from December 2018 to December 2019 at 12 sites along a disturbance gradient from a modified environment to 400 m inside the forest. We used ovitraps, BG-Sentinel, and protected human attract

Inferring the Main Drivers of SARS-CoV-2 Global Transmissibility by Feature Selection Methods.

Identifying the main environmental drivers of SARS-CoV-2 transmissibility in the population is crucial for understanding current and potential future outbursts of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. To address this problem, we concentrate on the basic reproduction number R 0, which is not sensitive to testing coverage and represents transmissibility in an absence of social distancing and in a completely susceptible population. While many variables may potentially influence R 0, a high correlation between these variables may obscure the result interpretation. Consequently, we combine Princi

Hepatitis B virus infection in EU/EEA and United Kingdom prisons: a descriptive analysis.

People in prison are disproportionately affected by viral hepatitis. To examine the current epidemiology of and responses targeting hepatitis B virus (HBV) in prisons across the European Union, European Economic Area and United Kingdom, we analysed HBV-specific data from the World Health Organization's Health in Prisons European Database and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control's hepatitis B prevalence database. Hepatitis B surface antigen seroprevalence ranged from 0% in a maximum-security prison in United Kingdom to 25.2% in two Bulgarian juvenile detention centres. Univers

Dengue and COVID-19 infections in the ASEAN region: a concurrent outbreak of viral diseases.

Member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have faced dengue outbreaks for decades, and the region has one of the highest rates of dengue globally. Outbreaks continue to occur concurrently with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in the 10 ASEAN countries. Both infectious diseases pose a tremendous burden in these countries related to both infection control and the economy. Increases in the number of dengue cases occurred in part due to disruptions in the pathogen-host-vector relationship caused by changes in human behaviour in response to the COVID-19

Evaluation of the Worldwide Occurrence of Rabies in Dogs and Cats Using a Simple and Homogenous Framework for Quantitative Risk Assessments of Rabies Reintroduction in Disease-Free Areas through Pet Movements.

Dog and cat rabies cases imported from rabies enzootic countries represent a major threat for areas that have acquired rabies-free status and quantitative risk analyses (QRAs) are developed in order to assess this risk of rabies reintroduction through dog and cat movements. Herein we describe a framework to evaluate dog and cat rabies incidence levels in exporting countries along with the associated uncertainty for such QRAs. For enzootic dog rabies areas (EDRAs), we extended and adapted a previously published method to specify the relationship between dog rabies vaccination coverage and canin

Domestic Horse Bite: An Unusual Etiology of Crush Injury of the Fourth Finger-How to Manage?

Almost 2% of all emergency admissions involve an animal bite. While horses bite humans very rarely, their bites are mostly associated with fatalities. Herein, we report the case of a 23-year old bitten by a domestic horse causing a crush injury to his fourth finger with fracture dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint. The patient benefited upon arrival at the emergency department from copious irrigation with saline serum, tetanus toxoid, postexposure rabies vaccination, and prophylactic antibiotic therapy. In the operating room, surgical exploration found the ulnar digital pedicle s

Global neurosurgery: current and potential impact of neurosurgeons at the World Health Organization and the World Health Assembly. Executive summary of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies-World Health Organization Liaison Committee at the 71st World Health Assembly.

Since the creation of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948, the annual World Health Assembly (WHA) has been the major forum for discussion, debate, and approval of the global health agenda. As such, it informs the framework for the policies and budgets of many of its Member States. For most of its history, a significant portion of the attention of health ministers and Member States has been given to issues of clean water, vaccination, and communicable diseases. For neurosurgeons, the adoption of WHA Resolution 68.15 changed the global health landscape because the importance of surgical

Epidemiological situation of transboundary animal diseases in North African countries-proposition of a regional control strategy.

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) defined transboundary animal diseases (TADs) as those that are of significant economic, trade, and food security importance for a considerable number of countries. TADs can easily spread to other countries, reach epidemic proportions, and where control, management, or exclusion is required cooperation between several countries. The North African countries are vulnerable to several TADs by virtue of its geographical location, its borders with the Sahel region, and peculiar control constraints on the budgets of the national veterinary services of each

Utility of the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube assay for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in Moroccan children.

SETTING: The utility of interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs), such as the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) test, in diagnosing active tuberculosis (TB) in children is unclear and depends on the epidemiological setting. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of QFT-GIT for TB diagnosis in children living in Morocco, an intermediate TB incidence country with high bacille Calmette-Gurin vaccination coverage. DESIGN: We prospectively recruited 109 Moroccan children hospitalised for clinically suspected TB, all of whom were tested using QFT-GIT. RESULTS: For 81 of the 109 children, the f

Dynamic epidemiology of acute viral hepatitis in Japan.

The epidemiology of acute viral hepatitis (AVH) is dynamic and affected by many factors including hygiene, socioeconomic status and vaccination coverage. A total of 4,302 cases of AVH were sequentially enrolled in this nationwide study between 1980 and 2008. Of the cases of AVH, acute hepatitis A (AHA) accounted for 1,583 (36.8%), acute hepatitis B (AHB) for 1,197 (27.8%), acute hepatitis C (AHC) for 359 (8.3%), and non-A, non-B and non-C (non-ABC) for 1,163 (27.0%). Between 1980 and 1995, the proportions of AHA, AHB, AHC and non-ABC were approximately 40, 25, 10 and 25%; between 1996 and 2003

TBE--awareness and protection: the impact of epidemiology, changing lifestyle, and environmental factors.

The International Scientific Working Group on Tick-Borne Encephalitis (ISW-TBE) held its 12th Annual Meeting in January 2010. The international awareness among the issue of TBE is on the rise, as the European Center for Disease Control considers TBE of high relevance and has launched a series of activities aimed at improving awareness of this tick-transmissible infection and also the World Health Organization has taken up the cause of TBE. The epidemiology of TBE in Europe is characterized by two distinct trends, i.e., a consistent expansion of risk areas on the one hand and major fluctuations

Global tuberculosis trends: a reflection of changes in tuberculosis control or in population health?

BACKGROUND: Many international organizations are advocating for new funds for tuberculosis (TB) specific interventions. Although this approach should help reduce TB incidence, improvements in population health may also be important. We have analyzed the association between changes in population health and health service indicators, and concomitant changes in TB incidence between 1990 and 2005. METHODS: Country level data on population health and health services, economic and epidemiologic indicators were obtained for 165 countries. Regression methods were used to estimate the association of c
