Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is an ongoing complication following cardiac surgery, with an incidence of 15%-60%. It is associated with substantial mortality and morbidity, as well increased hospital stays and healthcare costs. The pathogenesis is not fully understood, but the literature suggests that POAF occurs when transient, postoperative triggers act on vulnerable atrial tissue produced by preoperative, procedure-induced and postoperative processes such as inflammation, oxidative stress, autonomic dysfunction and electrophysiological remodelling of the atrial tissues. This sets

Ischemic mitral regurgitation (MR) is a valvular complication frequently seen in patients with coronary artery disease and is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Ischemic mitral regurgitation has a complex, heterogeneous, and still incompletely understood pathophysiology involving both the mitral valve and the left ventricle. The occurrence of valve regurgitation in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy in return accelerates left ventricular remodelling and dysfunction, ultimately leading to irreversible heart failure. Diagnostic evaluation of ischemic MR is unique and different

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) comprises a group of pathophysiological syndromes characterized by elevated pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance, which lead to right ventricular overload, and even right heart failure. PH has a poor prognosis and severely leads to a decline in quality of life. Historically, patients with PH were advised to limit their physical activity. However, an increasing number of studies have reported the safety and efficacy of exercise rehabilitation training in PH. This review briefly examined and summarized the effects of exercise rehabilitation trai

Alzheimer's disease is the most common neurodegenerative disorder and no disease-modifying treatment is currently available. Research has shown that while brain neurogenesis continues in adult life, it declines with age. Using parabiosis, plasma transfusions and direct administration of neural growth factors, animal studies have demonstrated the positive impact of exposure to young blood products on neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity in an aging brain. The hippocampus and the sub-ventricular zones were identified as the main regions affected. Promising findings have prompted researchers to e

Hyperglycaemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia and insulin resistance collectively impact on the myocardium of people with diabetes, triggering molecular, structural and myocardial abnormalities. These have been suggested to aggravate oxidative stress, systemic inflammation, myocardial lipotoxicity and impaired myocardial substrate utilization. As a consequence, this leads to the development of a spectrum of cardiovascular diseases, which may include but not limited to coronary endothelial dysfunction, and left ventricular remodelling and dysfunction. Diabetic heart disease (DHD) is the term used

PURPOSE: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common form of arrhythmia. AF leads to electrical remodelling and fibrosis of the atria; however, the mechanism(s) remain poorly understood. Galectin-3 is a potential mediator of cardiac fibrosis. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between serum galectin-3 levels and paroxysmal AF.
METHODS: Forty-six patients with paroxysmal AF and preserved left ventricular systolic function, and 38 age- and gender-matched control subjects, were involved in the study. Serum galectin-3 levels were analyzed with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterised by excessive pulmonary vascular remodelling involving deregulated proliferation of cells in intima, media as well as adventitia. Pulmonary arterial endothelial cell (PAEC) hyperproliferation and survival underlies the endothelial pathobiology of the disease. The indispensable involvement of Notch1 in the arterial endothelial phenotype and angiogenesis provides intriguing prospects for its involvement in the pathogenesis of PAH.We observed an increased expression of Notch1 in lungs of idiopathic PAH (IPAH) patients and hypoxia/SU5416 (SUHx)

Awareness of the importance of sleep-related disorders in patients with cardiovascular diseases is growing. In particular, sleep-disordered breathing, short sleep time, and low sleep quality are frequently reported by patients with heart failure (HF). Sleep-disordered breathing, which includes obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and central sleep apnoea (CSA), is common in patients with HF and has been suggested to increase the morbidity and mortality in these patients. Both OSA and CSA are associated with increased sympathetic activation, vagal withdrawal, altered haemodynamic loading conditions,

Molecular imaging is a new and evolving field that employs a targeted approach to noninvasively assess biologic processes in vivo. By assessing key elements in specific cellular processes prior to irreversible end-organ damage, molecular tools will allow for earlier detection and intervention, improving management and outcomes associated with cardiovascular diseases. The goal of those working to expand this field is not just to provide diagnostic and prognostic information, but rather to guide an individual's pharmacological, cell-based, or genetic therapeutic regimen. This article will review

Myocardial fibrosis is an integral component of most cardiac pathologic conditions and contributes to the development of both systolic and diastolic dysfunction. Because of the availability of genetically manipulated animals, mouse models are essential for understanding the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of cardiac fibrosis. Accordingly, we characterized the inflammatory and fibrotic response in a mouse model of cardiac pressure overload due to transverse aortic constriction (TAC). Following TAC, mouse hearts exhibited induction of chemokines and proinflammatory cytokines, associated

Highly trained athletes show a variety of electrocardiographic (ECG) changes, including a striking increase of R or S wave voltage, either flat or deeply inverted T waves, and deep Q waves, that suggest the presence of structural cardiovascular disease, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, which represent the most common causes of sudden death in young competitive athletes. Despite a number of previous observational surveys, the determinants and clinical significance of these abnormal ECG patterns in trained athletes are still uncertain. There

BACKGROUND: Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation is effective for improving the prognosis of patients with heart failure (HF), but little is known about its interactions with dietary components. We investigated the impacts of dietary fat intake and its source on the cardioprotective effects of exercise in mice with HF.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Endurance exercise and diets with different fat composition, including a normal diet (NE: 11% fat), a soybean oil-rich diet (SE: 32% fat) and a lard-rich diet (LE: 32% fat), were provided for 4 weeks to mice with HF induced by transverse aortic constrictio

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its progressive form, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), are strongly linked to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), yet the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear because robust integrative preclinical models are lacking and the liver and heart are rarely studied as a coordinated system. Here we show that Alms1 -/- (Foz/Foz) mice fed a Western diet develop MASH with advanced liver fibrosis accompanied by a HFpEF phenotype characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy, i

The mortality rates attributed to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are increasing within the United States. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) are two severe, life-threatening subtypes of CVD. Although ASCVD and PAH are distinct vascular disorders, they share common mechanisms, including endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, smooth muscle proliferation, fibrosis, and vascular remodeling. It is noteworthy that patients diagnosed with PAH may have underlying atherosclerotic coronary artery disease at a rate of ∼28%, and conversely, patients wit

INTRODUCTION: Adult atrial septal defect (ASD) is no longer regarded as a benign congenital lesion, as long-term follow-up studies have demonstrated substantial risks of atrial arrhythmias, heart failure (HF), pulmonary hypertension (PH), and excess mortality. Optimal treatment selection in adults therefore requires risk stratification beyond defect size and shunt magnitude alone. Importantly, adult ASD management increasingly demands a physiology-driven and patient-centered approach rather than a purely anatomical paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Titin (TTN), a giant structural and signaling protein of striated muscle, participates in intracellular signaling networks and cytoskeletal organization, potentially influencing cell activation, trafficking, and interactions with other tissues, including the heart.
METHODS: In this pilot study, 29 patients with acute myocarditis and 10 healthy individuals were prospectively enrolled. Peripheral blood was obtained on the first day of hospital admission, total RNA was isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and TTN mRNA expression was quantified.
RESULTS: TTN expr

Long-term non-cancer mortality following lung cancer surgery remains an under-recognized challenge in clinical practice. This review proposes a novel "pulmonary hypertensive phenotype" hypothesis, suggesting that the permanent reduction of the pulmonary vascular bed after anatomical resection acts as the primary upstream driver of systemic vulnerability. While the ventilatory capacity may partially recover through enlargement of the airspace and compensatory remodeling, restoration of the pulmonary vascular bed is often incomplete. This deficit leads to a sustained right ventricular afterload

BACKGROUND: Pediatric dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a rare, progressive heart disease with variable outcomes that range from recovery to heart transplantation. To date, there are no prognostic biomarkers for children with DCM. Identifying circulating biomarkers that are associated with clinical outcomes is critical for personalized management.
METHODS: miRNAs were identified by RNA-seq, whereas proteins were identified by SomaScan®. Machine learning methodologies were used to explore the predictive ability of circulating factors identified from serum samples collected at the time of present

Ischemic heart disease is a leading cause of death worldwide. While percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) restores blood flow in acute coronary syndrome (ACS), reperfusion injury exacerbates myocardial damage, contributing to heart failure (HF). Preemptive administration of a cardioprotective agent could help counter the imminent proinflammatory insult of PCI and reperfusion. Administering BT2, a small-molecule MAPK kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase inhibitor, 24 hours before and during ischemia in rats before reperfusion reduced infarct size by ~70% and preserved cardiac functio
