Atrial-based pacing for sinus node dysfunction in dogs: initial results.

BACKGROUND: An important consideration for the treatment of sick sinus syndrome (SSS) lies in the function of the atrioventricular (AV) node because most patients with SSS retain the ability to conduct atrial impulses. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study examined the feasibility of atrial pacing (AAI) in dogs with sinus node dysfunction (SND). ANIMALS: Sixteen dogs with SND and AAI pacing were identified. METHODS: Retrospective review of medical records. RESULTS: Follow-up time ranged from 45 to 1,227 days (mean: 292 days). Only 1 dog developed AV block 3 days postoperatively.

Histologic and immunohistochemical review of splenic fibrohistiocytic nodules in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Splenic fibrohistiocytic nodules (SFHN) are commonly diagnosed. It is suspected that these represent a heterogeneous group of malignant and nonmalignant diseases, separation of which could improve the ability of clinicians to prognosticate for dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Immunohistochemistry will differentiate histologic diagnoses within the group of SFHN; survival after splenectomy is associated with those histologic types. ANIMALS: Thirty-two dogs with SFHN treated by or under direction from veterinary oncologists. METHODS: Retrospective case record analysis from dogs followe

A review of the pathology and treatment of canine respiratory infections.

Numerous infectious agents are responsible for causing primary or secondary respiratory disease in dogs. These agents can cause upper or lower respiratory infections commonly observed in veterinary practices. Clinical signs might vary from mild dyspnea, sneezing, and coughing to severe pneumonia with systemic manifestations. Depending on the etiologic agent, the gross and microscopic changes observed during these infections can be rather unspecific or have highly characteristic patterns. While histopathology and cytology are not always required for diagnosis of respiratory infections, they are

Qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the electroencephalogram in normal horses after sedation.

BACKGROUND: The administration of certain sedatives has been shown to promote sleep in humans. Related agents induce sleep-like behavior when administered to horses. Interpretation of electroencephalograms (EEGs) obtained from sedated horses should take into account background activity, presence of sleep-related EEG events, and the animal's behavior. HYPOTHESIS: Sedatives induce states of vigilance that are indistinguishable on EEGs from those that occur naturally. ANIMALS: Six healthy horses. METHODS: Digital EEG with video was recorded after administration of 1 of 4 sedatives (acepromazin

Venereal shedding of equid herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) in naturally infected stallions.

BACKGROUND: Equid herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) is a highly prevalent pathogen in horse populations worldwide. Oronasal infection represents the classic route of disease transmission. Venereal shedding of EHV-1 is not regarded relevant in terms of virus spreading, which is in contrast to the close relatives of EHV-1, bovine and suid alphaherpesvirus, for which artificial insemination is a well-documented and accepted means of virus spread. OBJECTIVES: Documentation of venereal EHV-1 shedding in 3 naturally infected stallions. ANIMALS: Three stallions were infected during an acute outbreak by an EHV-

Use of computed tomography adrenal gland measurement for differentiating ACTH dependence from ACTH independence in 64 dogs with hyperadenocorticism.

BACKGROUND: The measurement of adrenal gland size on computed tomography (CT) scan has been proposed for the etiological diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism (HAC) in dogs. Symmetric adrenal glands are considered to provide evidence for ACTH-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (ADHAC), whereas asymmetry suggests ACTH-independent hyperadrenocorticism (AIHAC). However, there are currently no validated criteria for such differentiation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective study was to compare various adrenal CT scan measurements and the derived ratios in ADHAC and AIHAC cases, and to validate crite
