Child-to-parent violence is a form of family violence that is still a well-kept secret. Abused parents can be victims of different types of abuse. Children can use both physical and psychological violence such as financial threats to take control of the home. In this situation, parents often no longer dare to contradict their children by fear of triggering uncontrollable violence. Although the phenomenon recently drew the attention of the media, there is still little knowledge about its prevalence and clinical characteristics. Most families remain isolated for a long time and, even in case of

OBJECTIVE: Clinicians are tasked with assessing the relationship between violence and mental illness. Yet, there is now a legal expectation in some countries that public services, including health professionals, assess risk of violent extremism - with few available measures. We previously developed a new measure of Sympathies for Radicalisation, using items that measure Sympathies for Violent Protest and Terrorism. In this paper, we present the detailed psychometric properties of a reduced item measure of Sympathies for Violent Protest and Terrorism. We use data from two studies to test replic

Exposure to violence is a serious mental and public health issue. In particular, children exposed to violence are at risk for poor developmental outcomes and physical and mental health problems. One area that has been shown to increase the risk for poor outcomes is the use of corporal punishment as a discipline method. While researchers are starting to ask children directly about their experiences of violence, there is limited research with children about their perspectives on physical punishment, particularly in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC). This paper begins to address this gap by

The aim of this observational study was to assess the rates of aggressive and violent behavior in patients admitted to an Italian emergency psychiatric unit and to explore possible risk factors for patient violence. In a population of 313 consecutive patients, we considered aggressive or violent behavior, rated according to a hierarchy from no aggressive behavior to serious physical violence. The results confirm that young age, psychotic symptoms, excitement, akathisia, and diagnosis of personality disorder are risk factors for violent behavior. The unique and major finding of the study is the

As middle and high school students consume and create their own pornography or use it as a form of violence perpetration known as image-based sexual abuse, school staff struggle to find appropriate responses to these issues. As pornography use becomes more prevalent, and discourse on sexual violence more public, pornography education could become a tool for preventing sexual violence and promoting sexual health. In response, we explored the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of PopPorn, a 4-module pornography and IBSA professional development training program in a sample of staff who work fo

BACKGROUND: Women on probation (community supervision) report high rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and ongoing trauma, yet little research has examined how trauma across the life course relates to perinatal outcomes during community supervision. This study examined associations between lifetime trauma and perinatal violence, infant separation, and postpartum mood symptoms among women who experienced pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum while on probation.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional secondary analysis from N = 60 women in South-Central Texas who had a pregnancy with

BACKGROUND: Violence is one of the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. One-way society attempts to eliminate violence is through criminal punishment. Yet, in many contexts, punishment fails to reduce violence and may cause other harms. Current research on violence often suffers from same-source bias which can produce spurious associations. This study assesses the associations of different forms of criminal punishment (monetary sanctions, incarceration, and probation) with violent injuries in two unique datasets.
METHODS: This study examines a unique combination of hospita

Measuring experiences of intimate partner violence is critical for researchers and advocates. One measure, the Abusive Behavior Inventory (ABI), has limited testing but is used more frequently by advocates in domestic violence organizations. This article describes the psychometric evaluation of the ABI through confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses among data collected with 457 female survivors of abuse in seven states and Puerto Rico. The findings provide evidence for the reliability of a revised ABI (ABI-R) with three factors: physical violence, psychological abuse, and sexual abuse.

Domestic violence is a significant health problem affecting women all around the world by causing a wide range of physical and psychological traumas. Yemen has a very high percentage of women experiencing intimate partner violence (up to 50%) and a high mortality rate. In this article, we are presenting 3 particular cases of domestic violence deaths in which the weapon used was a jambia (jambia, jambiah, jambiya, djambia), a special dagger specific to Yemen and the surrounding areas. We are also summarizing the main characteristics of jambia-inflicted lesions and their thanatology.

The first of a two-part series on workplace violence in the healthcare setting, this article focuses on what each individual healthcare worker can do to reduce the likelihood of a verbal assault escalating into a physical assault. Workplace violence is defined, and signs that may predict violent behavior are listed. Techniques to reduce the possibility that a healthcare worker will be injured in a violent situation are presented, including tips for spoken communication, body language, and disengagement. The second of the two-part series highlights administrative and operational steps that decr

BACKGROUND: Firearm violence is a pressing public health crisis in the United States and disproportionately impacts sexual and gender minority (SGM) young adults of color who already face systemic inequities. Despite elevated risks of suicidality and violence victimization, firearm violence research rarely focuses on SGM populations.
PURPOSE: This study examined firearm experiences among SGM young adults of color in Detroit, MI, to inform trauma-informed care, firearm safety education, and inclusive prevention strategies.
METHODS: Using a community-engaged convergent parallel mixed-methods d

BACKGROUND: Sibling violence is one of the most prevalent yet underacknowledged forms of family violence and may, in rare instances, escalate to siblicide. Developmental characteristics of juvenile siblicide offenders have received limited empirical attention, particularly regarding maltreatment exposure and cumulative adversity.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the sociodemographic, familial, psychiatric, and offense-related profiles of juvenile siblicide offenders, with a focus on maltreatment exposure, cumulative adversity, and developmental contexts of lethal sibling violence.

In order to continue pushing college campuses to the forefront of survivor-centered practice and student-centered care, it is imperative that the barriers students experience in accessing campus sexual violence resource centers be documented and addressed. This research evaluates student and staff perceptions of barriers to accessing the Campus Assault Resources and Education (CARE) offices on three University of California (UC) campuses. Data were collected by researchers from UC Speaks Up, a cross-campus research initiative at UC Los Angeles (UCLA), UC Santa Barbara (UCSB), and UC San Diego

Children living in armed conflict zones are often exposed to political violence and other risk factors that may be caused or exacerbated by the conflict, such as poverty and family violence. If left untreated, these experiences may cause psychological problems throughout life. This study investigated the psychological well-being of children living in the low-intensity armed conflict zone in Turkey in relation to their adverse experiences. We collected data from 409 caregivers for their children (236 girls) aged 5.5 to 18 years (mean [M] = 11.50, standard deviation [SD] = 3.65). Caregivers prov

This study explores the victim-offender overlap, where intimate partner victimization (physical and verbal) increases the likelihood of subsequent violent behavior, within the context of the global pandemic, using data from both Western (the United States, Denmark, and the Netherlands) and non-Western (Ukraine, Guatemala, and Pakistan) settings. Findings reveal that pandemic strain (e.g., concerns about the virus, food shortages, and health care issues) is significantly associated with violence (Western: b = .071, p < .001; non-Western: b = .025, p < .001) and the risk of victimization in both

Most doctors and other health care workers have at some time received threats of violence, but the assessment of police detainees can be especially challenging and in a recent study of police surgeons, 18% had experienced physical violence. Aggression towards carers rarely erupts without warning and there is much that the examining doctor can do to minimize personal risk. This review offers a brief overview of current understanding about the causes of violence and offers guidance on the systematic assessment of risk and how to manage this within the setting of a clinical assessment of a detain

Battered women are exposed to multiple forms of intimate partner abuse. This article explores the independent contributions of physical violence, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and stalking on symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among a sample of 413 severely battered, help-seeking women. The authors test the unique effects of psychological abuse and stalking on mental health outcomes, after controlling for physical violence, injuries, and sexual coercion. Mean scores for the sample fall into the moderate to severe range for PTSD and within the moderate categ

The purpose of this study was to describe risky sexual behaviors among women with protective orders against violent male partners (N=673), as well as to examine associations of relationship factors, psychological abuse, severity of partner violence, sexual violence, and women's substance abuse with risky sexual behavior. An HIV sexual risk index was computed based on the participant's self-reported risky sexual behavior, the participants' estimations of the abusive partner's extra dyadic sexual behavior and the abusive partner's illicit drug use. The majority of women engaged in risky sexual p
