Vitamin A deficiency compromises the barrier function of the retinal pigment epithelium.

A major cause for childhood blindness worldwide is attributed to nutritional vitamin A deficiency. Surprisingly, the molecular basis of the ensuing retinal degeneration has not been well defined. Abundant expression of the retinoid transporter STRA6 in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and homeostatic blood levels of retinol-binding protein delay vitamin A deprivation of the mouse eyes. Hence, genetic dissection of STRA6 makes mice susceptible to nutritional manipulation of ocular retinoid status. We performed RNA-seq analyses and complemented the data with tests of visual physiology, ocula

Optic neuritis and autoimmune optic neuropathies: advances in diagnosis and treatment.

Optic neuritis is an inflammatory optic neuropathy that is commonly indicative of autoimmune neurological disorders including multiple sclerosis, myelin-oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease, and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder. Early clinical recognition of optic neuritis is important in determining the potential aetiology, which has bearing on prognosis and treatment. Regaining high-contrast visual acuity is common in people with idiopathic optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis-associated optic neuritis; however, residual deficits in contrast sensitivity, binocular

Acute phase treatment in central retinal artery occlusion: thrombolysis, hyperbaric oxygen therapy or both?

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a neuro-ophthalmological emergency. There is a finite time window for acute interventions such as revascularization (e.g. intravenous thrombolysis-IVT) and retinal oxygenation (e.g. hyperbaric oxygen therapy-HBOT) therapies. Case 1: A 35-year-old female presented with CRAO in the right eye (OD) confirmed by fluorescein angiography (FA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). She underwent 4 sessions of HBOT (100% O2 at 2.4 atmosphere absolute for 90 min). Afterwards, visual defect on the nasal field was kept but visual acuity (VA) improved from counti

Spatial and Temporal High Processing of Visual and Auditory Stimuli in Cervical Dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: Investigation of spatial and temporal cognitive processing in idiopathic cervical dystonia (CD) by means of specific tasks based on perception in time and space domains of visual and auditory stimuli. BACKGROUND: Previous psychophysiological studies have investigated temporal and spatial characteristics of neural processing of sensory stimuli (mainly somatosensorial and visual), whereas the definition of such processing at higher cognitive level has not been sufficiently addressed. The impairment of time and space processing is likely driven by basal ganglia dysfunction. However, o

Dissociable effects of anodal and cathodal tDCS reveal distinct functional roles for right parietal cortex in the detection of single and competing stimuli.

Spatial attention can be used to direct neural processing resources to a subset of task-relevant or otherwise salient items within the environment. Such selective processes are particularly important for resolving competition between multiple stimuli. Deficits in processing single stimuli can arise after damage to parietal, frontal and temporal brain regions, as is typical in patients with contralesional spatial neglect. By contrast, deficits in processing multiple competing stimuli may arise specifically following lesions of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), as occurs in the disorder of sp

A functional hierarchy within the parietofrontal network in stimulus selection and attention control.

Although we are confronted with an ever-changing environment, we do not have the capacity to analyze all incoming sensory information. Perception is selective and is guided both by salient events occurring in our visual field and by cognitive premises about what needs our attention. Although the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) and frontal eye field (FEF) are known to represent the position of visual attention, their respective contributions to its control are still unclear. Here, we report LIP and FEF neuronal activities recorded while monkeys performed a voluntary attention-orientation targe

Handedness-related cortical modulation of the vestibular-ocular reflex.

Multisensory visuo-vestibular cortical areas are important for spatial orientation and facilitate the control of the brainstem-mediated vestibular ocular reflex (VOR). Despite reports of visual input and cognitive tasks modulating the VOR through cortical control, it is unknown whether higher-order visual stimuli such as bistable perception and attention tasks involving visual imagery have an effect on the VOR. This is a possibility since such stimuli recruit cortical areas overlapping with those engaged during vestibular activation. Here we used a novel paradigm in which human subjects view b

fMRI-activation during drawing a naturalistic or sketchy portrait.

Neural processes for naturalistic drawing might be discerned into object recognition and analysis, attention processes guiding eye hand interaction, encoding of visual features in an allocentric reference frame, a transfer into the motor command and precise motor guidance with tight sensorimotor feedback. Cerebral representations in a real life paradigm during naturalistic drawing have sparsely been investigated. Using a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) paradigm we measured 20 naive subjects during drawing a portrait from a frontal face presented as a photograph. Participants were

Impaired processing of 3D motion-defined faces in mild cognitive impairment and healthy aging: an fMRI study.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which shows high risk for conversion to Alzheimer's disease (AD), is accompanied by progressive visual deteriorations that so far are poorly understood. Here, we compared dorsal and ventral visual stream functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activity among amnestic MCI, healthy elderly, and young participants during structure-from-motion (SFM) face categorization performance. Task performance varied with stimulus depth and duration levels and differences among groups were highly correlated with face-related fMRI activation patterns. Young participants sh

[Weill Marchesani syndrome. Report of a case].

Weill Marchesani syndrome is a congenital disease that combines microspherophakia and skeletal abnormalities. The authors report a 19-year-old male, born of a consanguineous marriage, with a progressive decrease in visual acuity. The general examination showed a squat look, dwarfism, muscle hypertrophy, short hands and feet, and joint stiffness. The ophthalmological examination showed that visual acuity was limited to hand motion in the right eye despite correction and no perception of light in the left eye. Intraocular pressure was 36 mmHg in the right eye and 40 mmHg in the left eye. The ant

Dual-Arm Teleoperated Robotic Microsurgery System with Live Volumetric OCT Image Feedback.

In microsurgery, surgeons frequently encounter challenges due to the need for exceptional precision and dexterity, the lack of depth perception for micro-scale surgical maneuvers, and the inevitable effects of fatigue and hand tremor. In surgical robotics, conventional intraoperative perception systems normally provide real-time image feedback, but depth and volumetric information is typically lacking. To overcome these challenges, we propose a teleoperated robotic system with two arms to provide high-fidelity intraoperative volumetric imaging during micro-scale tissue manipulation. This syste

Perception of shoulder muscular effort during low-demand load transfer tasks.

This study focused on quantifying the mathematical relationship between shoulder physical loading and muscular effort perception during low physical demand tasks. Subjects underwent training to calibrate to their range of shoulder strength capability. Subjects transferred visually identical bottles representing specified percentages of extended arm maximal voluntary force (MVF) in defined azimuth directions to identified targets. They then reported their percentage of perceived shoulder exertion relative to their calibrated range. Measures of physical shoulder loading were calculated from expe

A Human-Centered Multimodal Framework for Characterizing Safety-Relevant Driver Functional Domains: An Exploratory Study of Professional Bus Drivers.

This study proposes a human-centered multimodal framework for characterizing safety-relevant driver functional domains in professional bus drivers. Unlike conventional approaches that rely on isolated psychological or physical assessments, the proposed framework integrates self-perception, psychomotor performance, and cognitive-perceptual assessment to provide an exploratory, structured characterization of driver-related functional capacities. Eighteen professional bus drivers participated in this study. Self-perception data were obtained from all 18 participants, whereas psychomotor and cogni

The Perception of Novel Consonant Clusters: A Comparison of Salience and Sonority.

Background/Objectives: In human language, speech sound units, referred to as segments, are rigidly ordered. Certain orderings are typologically common, while others are typologically rare. This pattern has led linguists to posit a scalar segment-intrinsic feature, referred to as "sonority," and a hierarchy relating to ordering referred to as the "sonority hierarchy." In generative phonology, it has been proposed that the sonority hierarchy is present in the innate underlying grammar as the Sonority Sequencing Principle (SSP) and variations thereof. In grammar-based approaches it is common for
