Anti-Müllerian hormone levels in recurrent embryonic miscarriage patients are frequently abnormal, and may affect pregnancy outcomes.

This prospective cohort study measured anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels in recurrent miscarriage (RM) patients, compared them to a normal population, and assessed the pregnancy outcomes. The RM patients demonstrated AMH levels that were significantly lower than the normal population, both in women aged ≤35 years, and those aged >35 years. AMH percentiles were found to be significantly lower in the study group of RM patients ≤35 years (p< .004) in the 5th and 50th percentiles, and in all percentiles in women >35 years (p< .03), were compared to women from a normal population. Serum AMH level

Spinal cord stimulation failure: evaluation of factors underlying hardware explantation.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord stimulation has been shown to improve pain relief and reduce narcotic analgesic use in cases of complex refractory pain syndromes. However, a subset of patients ultimately undergoes removal of the spinal cord stimulator (SCS) system, presumably because of surgical complications or poor efficacy. This retrospective study addresses the paucity of evidence regarding risk factors and underlying causes of spinal cord stimulation failures that necessitate this explantation. METHODS: In this retrospective single-center review, 129 patients underwent explantation of SCS hardwar

Evaluation of Rhodiola crenulata on growth and metabolism of NB-1691, an MYCN-amplified neuroblastoma cell line.

Outcomes of children with high grade neuroblastoma remain poor despite multi-agent chemotherapy regimens. Rhodiola crenulata extracts display anti-neoplastic properties against several cancers including breast cancer, melanoma, and glioblastoma. In this study, we evaluated the anti-neoplastic potential of Rhodiola crenulata extracts on human neuroblastoma cells. Through this work, cell viability and proliferation were evaluated following treatments with ethanol (vehicle control) or Rhodiola crenulata extract in neuroblastoma, NB-1691 or SK-N-AS cells, in vitro. Studying a disease with no home--lessons in trial recruitment from the PATCH II study.

BACKGROUND: Cellulitis is a very common condition that often recurs. The PATCH II study was designed to explore the possibility of preventing future episodes of cellulitis, with resultant cost savings for the NHS. This was the first trial to be undertaken by the UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network. As such, it was the first to test a recruitment model that involved many busy clinicians each contributing just a few patients. METHODS: A double-blind randomised controlled trial comparing prophylactic antibiotics (penicillin V) with placebo tablets, for the prevention of repeat episodes of cel

A realist review of which advocacy interventions work for which abused women under what circumstances.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner abuse (including coercive control, physical, sexual, economic, emotional and economic abuse) is common worldwide. Advocacy may help women who are in, or have left, an abusive intimate relationship, to stop or reduce repeat victimisation and overcome consequences of the abuse. Advocacy primarily involves education, safety planning support and increasing access to different services. It may be stand-alone or part of other services and interventions, and may be provided within healthcare, criminal justice, social, government or specialist domestic violence services. W

The influence of psychosocial factors on recovery following acute whiplash trauma.

Persistent pain and disability after whiplash trauma has become an increasingly significant problem in many industrialized countries entailing comprehensive individual as well as social costs. The dissertation includes two areas of research within whiplash trauma. The first part contains two empirical articles focusing on risk factors for poor recovery. The second part contains a systematic review and an empirical article and concerns the influence of coping strategies on recovery with a special emphasis on possible gender differences. All empirical articles in the dissertation are based on se

Design of a 3D printed smartphone microscopic system with enhanced imaging ability for biomedical applications.

Portable, low-cost smartphone platform microscopic systems have emerged as a potential tool for imaging of various micron and submicron scale particles in recent years (Ozcan; Pirnstill and Coté; Breslauer et al.; Zhu et al.). In most of the reported works, it involves either the use of sophisticated optical set-ups along with a high-end computational tool for postprocessing of the captured images, or it requires a high-end configured smartphone to obtain enhanced imaging of the sample. Present work reports the working of a low-cost, field-portable 520× optical microscope using a smartphone. T

Effectiveness of a Brief Internet-Based Workplace Training Program to Support Help Seeking for Mental Ill-Health: Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are prevalent in working-aged adults. Although treatment provided by health professionals can improve symptoms and functioning, many people experiencing mental ill-health do not seek help. There have been very few effective interventions to improve help seeking in adults, with none implemented across diverse workplaces through online delivery. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this trial was to test the effectiveness of a co-designed program for increasing professional help seeking intentions in Australian employees, relative to an active control condition. The Experiences and Perceptions of Organizational Support Among Chinese Nurses Following Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are highly prevalent among nurses in China and can affect nurses' health, work ability, professional identity, and retention. Although Organizational Support Theory suggests that perceived organizational support shapes employees' post-injury attitudes and behaviours, little qualitative evidence explains how Chinese nurses interpret organizational responses after WMSDs, especially in the context of high clinical workloads and staffing pressure. OBJECTIVE(S): To explore and describe the experiences and perceptions of organizational supp

Developing and externally validating machine learning models to forecast short-term risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia.

PURPOSE: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) remains one of the most serious hospital-acquired infections in the intensive care unit (ICU), with high morbidity and mortality. Early identification of patients at risk for developing VAP could enable timely diagnostics and intervention. However, current clinical tools are limited in their ability to detect early physiologic signals preceding VAP onset. We aimed to build supervised machine learning models to predict short term onset of VAP. METHODS: We analyzed electronic health record data from a prospective observational cohort of ICU patient

Factors associated with unmet psychological care needs and development of a Neuman systems model-based risk prediction model in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) often face symptom distress, treatment decision-making, demands for family support, communication needs, and financial concerns during early hospitalization. This study examined factors associated with unmet psychological care needs and developed a risk prediction model, guided by the Neuman Systems Model, to support early nursing stratification. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included 345 adults with HCC admitted between January 2020 and December 2024. Unmet psychological care needs were defined as a score of ≥3 on any

Left ventricular blood flow kinetic energy by 4D flow magnetic resonance imaging in patients with acute myocardial infarction after revascularization.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) can quickly restore epicardial coronary blood flow in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) to rescue the ischemic myocardium but it also frequently results in microvascular damage and further myocyte necrosis. The changes in left ventricular (LV) hemodynamics in these patients after PCI are not clearly understood. The main objective of this study was to characterize the parameters of LV blood flow kinetic energy (KE) and to explore the predictive value of these parameters on 4D flow cardiac magnetic resonanc

Suboptimal Interrater Reliability Limits Predictive Value of Fetal Echocardiography for Neonatal Balloon Atrial Septostomy in Fetuses With Dextro-Transposition of the Great Arteries.

INTRODUCTION: Neonates with dextro-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA) require adequate mixing at the atrial level. Without this, they experience severe cyanosis, necessitating balloon atrial septostomy (BAS). Multiple studies have identified various fetal echocardiogram (FE) findings as risk factors for postnatal BAS. The predictive value of these findings remains poor in clinical use. HYPOTHESIS: We aimed to determine the relationship between interrater reliability (IRR) of FE BAS predictors and postnatal BAS, as well as postnatal markers of hypoxia/hypoxemia. We hypothesized that p

Predictive role of hepatic venous pressure gradient in bleeding events among patients with cirrhosis undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Major bleeding events during orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) are associated with poor outcomes. The proportion of this risk related to portal hypertension is unclear. Hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) is the gold standard for estimating portal hypertension. The aim of this study was to analyze the ability of HVPG to predict intraoperative major bleeding events during OLT in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a prospective database including all patients with cirrhosis who underwent OLT between 2010 and 2020 and had liver and right hea

Experiences with neonatal jaundice management in hospitals and the community: interviews with Australian health professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, neonatal jaundice accounts for considerable morbidity and mortality. Although severe adverse outcomes, such as hyperbilirubinaemia and kernicterus, are uncommon in high-income countries, these outcomes do occur, have enormous lifelong personal, health and social costs, and may be preventable. Evidence-based practice commonly relies on clinical guidelines; however, their implementation can be difficult. Implementation of neonatal jaundice care has been adversely affected by issues with professional boundaries, competing professional priorities and poor understanding of

Prevalence and factors associated with the awareness of obstetric fistula among women of reproductive age in The Gambia: a multilevel fixed effects analysis.

BACKGROUND: An obstetric fistula is an inappropriate connection between the vagina, rectum, or bladder that results in faecal or urine incontinence. Young women from rural areas with poor socioeconomic situations and education are the majority of victims, which restricts their access to high-quality healthcare. Obstetric fistulas can have devastating effects on the physical health of affected women if they are not promptly treated. Inadequate awareness of the symptoms delays recognition of the problem, prompt reporting, and treatment. Women with poor awareness of the disorder are also more lik

Association of β-Amyloid Burden With Sleep Dysfunction and Cognitive Impairment in Elderly Individuals With Cognitive Disorders.

IMPORTANCE: Evidence shows that sleep dysfunction and β-amyloid (Aβ) deposition work synergistically to impair brain function in individuals with normal cognition, increasing the risk of developing dementia later in life. However, whether Aβ continues to play an integral role in sleep dysfunction after the onset of cognitive decline in individuals with dementia is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Aβ deposition in the brain is associated with subjective measures of sleep quality and cognition in elderly individuals with cognitive disorders. Lameness associated with foot pain: results of magnetic resonance imaging in 199 horses (January 2001--December 2003) and response to treatment.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The diagnosis of foot-related lameness often remains elusive and it can be difficult to offer rational treatment, or to predict outcome. OBJECTIVES: To describe the spectrum of injuries of the foot identified using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to determine their relative prevalence among MRI diagnoses and to establish the long-term results of treatment. METHODS: The MR images of horses examined from January 2001--December 2003 were reviewed. Horses were selected for MRI if the pain causing lameness was localised to the foot using perineural analgesia but an
