Genetic characterization of Cryptosporidium in animal and human isolates from Jordan.

Little is known about the epidemiology of Cryptosporidium in Jordan and to date, only one genotyping study has been conducted on Cryptosporidium isolates from Jordanian children. In the present study, a total of 284 faecal samples from Jordanian cattle, sheep, goats and chicken and 48 human faecal samples were screened for the presence of Cryptosporidium using an 18S quantitative PCR (qPCR) and a C. parvum/C. hominis specific qPCR at a lectin locus. Of these, 37 of 284 animal faecal samples were positive by qPCR at the 18S locus giving an overall prevalence of 11.6%. The point prevalence of Cr

Rapid Differentiation of Filariae in Unstained and Stained Paraffin-Embedded Sections by a High-Resolution Melting Analysis PCR Assay.

BACKGROUND: Apart from infection with human filariae, zoonotic filariasis also occurs worldwide, and the numbers of cases have been increasing steadily. Diagnosis of intact filariae in tissues or organs depends on histological identification. The morphology of parasites in tissue-embedded sections is poor and shows high levels of homoplasy. Thus, the use of morphological characteristics in taxonomic studies is difficult and may not allow a specific diagnosis. METHODS: Here we report the use of real-time PCR with high-resolution melting analysis (HRM) to detect and identify Brugia malayi, Brug

Prevalence of select vector-borne pathogens in stray and client-owned dogs from Algiers.

Data on the prevalence of vector-borne diseases agents infecting canines in Algeria is currently lacking. The purpose of this study is to assess by serological and molecular methods the prevalence of select arthropod borne-bacterial infections in client-owned and stray dogs. Antibodies to Anaplasma phagocytophilum were the most prevalent at 47.7%, followed by Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. at 37.6%, Ehrlichia canis at 30.0%, Bartonella henselae at 32.4% and Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii at 27%. Seroprevalence was statistically significantly higher in stray dogs than those owned by clients.

Seroreactivity to Dirofilaria antigens in people from different areas of Serbia.

BACKGROUND: The Northern part of Serbia is hyperendemic-endemic for canine dirofilarioses. Considering this fact, many human dirofilarial infections could be expected, however only about 30 cases in Serbia have been described until today. Aims of this survey were to assess the people reactivity to the antigens of D. repens and D. immitis and to identify risk factors for the contact exposure. METHODS: Investigation included sera taken from 297 people (179 women and 118 men) living in different areas of Serbia (Pančevo, Novi Sad, Zaječar, Leskovac, Vranje, Niš, Pirot). Sera were analysed by mea

Clinical review of two fatal equine cases of infection with the insectivorous bat strain of Australian bat lyssavirus.

CASE SERIES: The first two confirmed cases of Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) infection in horses are presented. Both cases occurred in the same week in May 2013 in paddock mates in south-east Queensland. Australia has been one of only a few countries considered free from rabies-like viruses in domestic animal species. ABLV infection had previously only been confirmed in bats and humans. All three confirmed human cases were fatal, the latest in February 2013. An additional human case of possible abortive infection in 1996 has also been reported. Both equine cases reported here resulted in eut

Brucellosis and its particularities in children travelers.

Brucellosis is still endemic in many countries in the world, however, having a significantly higher incidence in developing countries. As consequence of travel, risk for children from non-endemic areas would be considerable when visiting developing countries. Then, the purpose of this review is to provide, after a bibliographical search, an update on the main aspects of this disease in the traveler children. For the general practitioner, but particularly for travel medicine practitioner and pediatricians, these clinicoepidemiological considerations should be taken in mind in the differential d

Shaping zoonosis risk: landscape ecology vs. landscape attractiveness for people, the case of tick-borne encephalitis in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: In this paper, the hazard and exposure concepts from risk assessment are applied in an innovative approach to understand zoonotic disease risk. Hazard is here related to the landscape ecology determining where the hosts, vectors and pathogens are and, exposure is defined as the attractiveness and accessibility to hazardous areas. Tick-borne encephalitis in Sweden was used as a case study. METHODS: Three boosted regression tree models are compared: a hazard model, an exposure model and a global model which combines the two approaches. RESULTS: The global model offers the best pred

Antimicrobial resistance monitoring projects for zoonotic and indicator bacteria of animal origin: common aspects and differences between EASSA and EFSA.

Resistance monitoring programmes are essential to generate data for inclusion in the scientific risk assessment of the potential for transmission of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria or their resistance determinants from food-producing animals to humans. This review compares the technical specifications on monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic Salmonella, Campylobacter and indicator Escherichia coli and Enterococcus as performed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) with veterinary pharmaceutical industry's European Antimicrobial Susceptibility Surveillance in Animals (EASSA

Host-pathogen Interaction at the Intestinal Mucosa Correlates With Zoonotic Potential of Streptococcus suis.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis has emerged as an important cause of bacterial meningitis in adults. The ingestion of undercooked pork is a risk factor for human S. suis serotype 2 (SS2) infection. Here we provide experimental evidence indicating that the gastrointestinal tract is an entry site of SS2 infection. METHODS: We developed a noninvasive in vivo model to study oral SS2 infection in piglets. We compared in vitro interaction of S. suis with human and porcine intestinal epithelial cells (IEC). RESULTS: Two out of 15 piglets showed clinical symptoms compatible with S. suis infection 24-

Relationship between domestic and wild birds in live poultry market and a novel human H7N9 virus in China.

To trace the source of the avian H7N9 viruses, we collected 99 samples from 4 live poultry markets and the family farms of 3 patients in Hangzhou city of Zhejiang province, China. We found that almost all positive samples came from chickens and ducks in live poultry markets. These results strongly suggest that the live poultry markets are the major source of recent human infections with H7N9 in Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province of China. Therefore, control measures are needed, not only in the domestic bird population, but also in the live poultry markets to reduce human H7N9 infection risk.

Intestinal parasites among wild rodents in Northern Gangwon-do, Korea.

To determine geographical patterns of natural parasite infections among wild rodents, a total of 46 wild rodents from 3 different localities in northern Gangwon-do (Province), Korea were examined for intestinal parasite infections. Along with nematodes such as hookworms and Syphacia spp., Plagiorchis muris (2 specimens) (Trematoda) were collected from striped field mice, Apodemus agrarius. In a Korean wood mouse, Apodemus peninsulae, the overall nematode infections were similar to A. agrarius, but an adult worm of Echinostoma hortense (Trematoda) was collected. In addition, 2 species of cestod

Brucellosis in humans--etiology, diagnostics, clinical forms.

Brucellosis in humans is a zoonosis of greatly varied clinical image. It occurs on all inhabited continents. The course of the disease may be acute, sub-acute or chronic. The etiologic factors of brucellosis are small, aerobic Gram-negative rods of the genus Brucella, which currently contains ten species: B. abortus, B. suis, B. ovis, B. melitensis, B. canis, B. neotomae, B. pinnipedialis, B. ceti, B. microti and B. inopinata. In humans, the disease is caused mainly by: B. melitensis as the most pathogenic species, followed by B. suis, whereas B. abortus is considered as the mildest type of br

Serologic evidence for circulating orthopoxviruses in peridomestic rodents from rural Uganda.

The prevalence of orthopoxviruses (OPXV) among wildlife, including monkeypox virus (MPXV), remains largely unknown. Outbreaks of human monkeypox in central Africa have been associated with hunting, butchering, and consuming infected forest animals, primarily rodents and primates. Monkeypox cases have not been reported in east Africa, where human contact with wildlife is more limited. Whether this lack of human disease is due to the absence of MPXV in rodents is unknown. However, testing of wildlife beyond the known geographic distribution of human cases of monkeypox has rarely been conducted,

Transmission of Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis between child and dog in an Aboriginal Australian community.

Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (SDSE), also known as group G and C streptococci, is becoming increasingly recognized as a pathogen in humans. We report here the finding of an identical strain of SDSE in the throat of a child and their dog in an Aboriginal Australian community. The strain was identified using the API 20Strep system, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, emm sequence typing (emmST) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) as a group C SDSE, stC839.5 and ST-3. Carriage of this strain by a human and dog in the same household justifies detailed epidemiological studies using molecul

Fungal/mycotic diseases of poultry-diagnosis, treatment and control: a review.

Fungal/mycotic diseases cause significant economic losses to the poultry industry either due to their direct infectious nature or due to production of mycotoxins, the secondary fungal metabolites produced in grains or poultry feed. Several fungi have created havoc in the poultry industry and some of them cause direct harm to human health due to their zoonotic implications. They are responsible for high morbidity and mortality, especially in young birds and cause stunted growth and diarrhea; and fatal encephalitis. Mycotic dermatitis is a possible health hazard associated with poultry houses. M

Factors associated with probable cluster of leptospirosis among kennel workers in Abuja, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Between February and October 2009 an increase in morbidity and mortality in dogs in a national kennel in Abuja, Nigeria, was observed with signs indicative of leptospirosis. Concurrent illness was observed in some kennel workers which had high titres of leptospira antibodies. METHODS: An unmatched case-control study was conducted to identify associated factors. Fifteen cases and fifteen controls were recruited. A probable case was defined as any person working at the kennel with history of fever, chills, headache, myalgia with either conjunctivitis or sore throat between Februar

[Four cases of cutaneous anthrax in Diyarbakir, Turkey].

Anthrax which is a rare disease in developed countries, is still a serious public health problem in countries like Turkey where livestock is common. In this report, four cases of cutaneous anthrax detected in Kirkira village of Diyarbakir, Southeast Anatolia, Turkey, were presented. Three female and one male patients were admitted to our hospital with the complaints of skin lesions and high fever lasting for 10 days. Their history indicated that they injured their fingers during slaughtering of a dead cow meat. All patients had irregular edged necrotic vesiculobullous lesions on the erythemato

Zoonotic pathogens associated with Hyalomma aegyptium in endangered tortoises: evidence for host-switching behaviour in ticks?

BACKGROUND: Hyalomma aegyptium is a hard-tick with a typical three-host life cycle. The main hosts are Palearctic tortoises of genus Testudo. However, other hosts can be used by immature ticks for feeding in natural conditions. Given this complex ecology and multiple host use, the circulation of pathogens by H. aegyptium between various hosts can be important from epidemiological point of view. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of H. aegyptium as natural carrier of four important zoonotic pathogens. METHODS: From 2008 to 2011, 448 H. aegyptium ticks were collected from 45 Spur-th

Infectious disease survey of Mus musculus from pet stores in New York City.

Most mice used in research are purchased devoid of specific pathogens. Experimental studies required us to evaluate the profile of infective agents harbored in mice sold as pets or food for captive reptiles. Anecdotal reports regarding disease in these mice abound, but there are few published reports on disease prevalence. Purchasers are unaware of the potential zoonotic or adventitious infections carried by these mice. This survey investigated the prevalence of ectoparasites, endoparasites, and viral, bacterial, and fungal agents carried by apparently healthy mice (n = 18) obtained from 6 pet
