Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) caused by group A streptococcus is a rare condition that rapidly developed to multiple organ failure even death. Therefore, prompt diagnosis, initiate appropriate antibiotics and other supportive treatments are critical. Here we reported a case of STSS caused by group A streptococcus infection. A healthy 39-year-old man presented a sudden pain in the left lower extremity, followed by a high fever (40.0 °C) with dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath. Twenty-four hours before the visit, the patient showed anuria. The patient was then admitted to the

BACKGROUND: Paediatric outpatient prescription (POP) monitoring is pivotal to identify inadequate prescriptions and optimize drug use. We aimed at describing recent trends in POPs in France.
METHODS: All reimbursed dispensations of outpatient prescribed drugs (excluding vaccines) were prospectively collected for the paediatric population (<18 years old) in the French national health database in 2010-2011 and 2018-2019 (mean 117,356,938/year). POP prevalence (proportion of children receiving ≥1 drug prescriptions/year) was calculated by age groups and compared by prevalence rate ratios (PRRs).

Objectives While penicillin allergies are commonly reported, their cross-reactivity with beta-lactam antibiotics is minimal. First-line treatment of gonorrheal infections includes a cephalosporin. In emergency department (ED) environments, physicians must consider these potential allergies when selecting antibiotics for a patient with symptoms concerning for sexually transmitted infection (STI). Methods A retrospective chart review of adult patients with symptoms concerning for STI presenting to an urban ED from January 2014 through June 2019 was performed. Antibiotic resistance is rising and we urgently need to gain a better quantitative understanding of how antibiotics act, which in turn would also speed up the development of new antibiotics. Here, we describe a computational model (COMBAT-COmputational Model of Bacterial Antibiotic Target-binding) that can quantitatively predict antibiotic dose-response relationships. Our goal is dual: We address a fundamental biological question and investigate how drug-target binding shapes antibiotic action. We also create a tool that can predict antibiotic efficacy a priori. COMBAT requires measurable bioc

This study sought to assess the genetic variability of Escherichia coli isolated from bloodstream infections (BSIs) presenting at Concord Hospital, Sydney during 2013-2016. Whole-genome sequencing was used to characterize 81 E. coli isolates sourced from community-onset (CO) and hospital-onset (HO) BSIs. The cohort comprised 64 CO and 17 HO isolates, including 35 multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates exhibiting phenotypic resistance to three or more antibiotic classes. Phylogenetic analysis identified two major ancestral clades. One was genetically diverse with 25 isolates distributed in 16 diffe

BACKGROUND: Ureaplasma urealyticum is an intra-cellular bacterium frequently found colonizing the genital tract. Known complications include localized infections, which can result in premature deliveries. Septic arthritis due to U. urealyticum in healthy patients is exceptionally rare, although opportunistic septic arthritis in agammaglobulinemic patients have been reported. However, there are no reports of septic arthritis due to U. urealyticum following caesarean section or in the post-partum period.

INTRODUCTION: Antibiotic-induced fever is a probably underestimated complication, which may be misdiagnosed as new infection. In this study, characteristics, diagnostic approach, and outcome of antibiotic-induced fever in patients treated for musculoskeletal infections are described.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients with antibiotic-induced fever after surgery treated at our institution from 2014 to 2017. Antibiotic-induced fever was diagnosed, if the following criteria were fulfilled: (i) central (ear) body temperature > 38.0 °C; (ii) intravenous antibiotics for > three days;

UNLABELLED: To address the resistance of Acinetobacter baumannii to β-lactam antibiotics, combination therapy between different antibiotic classes is increasingly used. The antibacterial activity of α-mangostin (AMT) alone or in combination with ceftazidime (CTZ) was investigated against ceftazidime-resistant A. baumannii DMST 45378 (CRAB). Initial screening showed that A. baumannii strains possessed AmpC β-lactamase (AmpC), extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and metallo-β-lactamases (MBL). Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of all test agents were >800 μg ml-1 against CRAB. The com

BACKGROUND: Many antibiotics have no effect on Gram-positive and Gram-negative microbes, which necessitates the prescription of broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents that can lead to increased risk of antibiotic resistance. These pathogens constitute a further threat because they are also resistant to numerous beta-lactam antibiotics, as well as other antibiotic groups. This study retrospectively investigates antimicrobial resistance in hospitalized patients suffering from pneumonia triggered by Gram-negative Serratia marcescens or Proteus mirabilis.
METHODS: The demographic and clinical data a

The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and to investigate the associations between exposures to antimicrobial drugs (AMDs) and AMR in fecal non-type specific Escherichia coli (NTSEC) recovered from a large population of feedlot cattle. Two-stage random sampling was used to select individually identified cattle for enrollment, which were sampled at arrival and then a second time later in the feeding period. Advanced regression techniques were used to estimate resistance prevalences, and to investigate associations between AMD exposures in

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVES: Ceftriaxone, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, is used for a vast variety of infectious diseases. Different types of adverse reactions are reported to be induced by ceftriaxone; however, there is limited published information on spontaneous adverse reactions collected by a national pharmacovigilance centre. This study was conducted to evaluate ceftriaxone-induced adverse drug events, registered in the Iranian pharmacovigilance database during a 10-year period, and to identify preventive measures for reducing ceftriaxone-induced adverse events.

Micrococcus luteus (NCTC2665, "Fleming strain") has one of the smallest genomes of free-living actinobacteria sequenced to date, comprising a single circular chromosome of 2,501,097 bp (G+C content, 73%) predicted to encode 2,403 proteins. The genome shows extensive synteny with that of the closely related organism, Kocuria rhizophila, from which it was taxonomically separated relatively recently. Despite its small size, the genome harbors 73 insertion sequence (IS) elements, almost all of which are closely related to elements found in other actinobacteria. An IS element is inserted into the r

Cephaloridine (CER) is a classical beta-lactam antibiotic that has long served as a model drug for the study of cephalosporin antibiotic-induced acute tubular necrosis. In the present study, we analyzed gene expression profiles in the kidney of rats given subtoxic and toxic doses of CER to identify gene expression alterations closely associated with CER-induced nephrotoxicity. Male Fischer 344 rats were intravenously injected with CER at three different dose levels (150, 300, and 600 mg/kg) and sacrificed after 24 h. Only the high dose (600 mg/kg) caused mild proximal tubular necrosis and slig
