BACKGROUND: Lateral abdominal wall hernias are relatively rare and present unique challenges to repair. Our group has developed an algorithm for repair based on several anatomic characteristics identified on preoperative imaging. Herein, we report our algorithm and outcomes of a large series of open retromuscular lateral abdominal wall hernia repairs.
STUDY DESIGN: Open retromuscular lateral abdominal wall hernia repairs performed at our institution from August 2014 through April 2021 were identified in the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative. Hernia characteristics, etiology, operati

PURPOSE: Low-attenuation muscle (LAM) area at mid-thigh, a computed tomography (CT)-derived index of intramuscular lipids, is associated with insulin resistance, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. The present study aimed at testing the hypothesis that changes in LAM area in trunk muscles from a single abdominal scan could provide relevant information to evaluate the effects of a lifestyle intervention without the use of a mid-thigh CT scan.
METHODS: Cardiometabolic risk variables, including waist circumference, lipoprotein-lipid profile, glucose tolerance, and cardiorespiratory fitness, were asses

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal surgery following transversus abdominis release (TAR) procedure commonly involves incisions through the previously implanted mesh, potentially creating vulnerabilities for hernia recurrence. Despite the popularity of the TAR procedure, current literature regarding post-AWR surgeries is limited. This study aims to reveal the incidence and outcomes of post-TAR non-hernia-related abdominal surgeries of any kind.
METHODS: Adult patients who underwent non-hernia-related abdominal surgery following ventral hernia repair with concurrent TAR procedure and permanent synthetic m

BackgroundRotator cuff (RC) disorders are common musculoskeletal conditions causing shoulder pain and functional loss. While abdominal muscles aid in core stabilization and force transmission, their strength, endurance, and thickness in RC disorders remain underexplored.ObjectivesThis study aimed to examine the differences in abdominal muscle performance between individuals with RC pathology and healthy controls and to evaluate the relationship of these parameters with pain, disability and quality of life.Materials and MethodThis cross-sectional study evaluated 128 individuals (RC group: 64; c

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare abdominal disease; that occasionally occurs congenitally in younger calves. Cytologic examination of peritoneal effusion (PE) was utilized to diagnose this disease, and was not diagnostic. Diagnostic accuracy has been elevated by recent use of ultrasonography (US), despite most diagnoses have been obtained post-mortem in slaughter houses or during clinical necropsy. In humans, ante-mortem diagnosis is highly associated with clinical use of computed tomography (CT) and laparoscopy together with imaging-assisted biopsy. The present report evaluates t

A 4-year-old girl with a solitary vascular anomaly of the mesentery presented with acute lower abdominal pain. Despite the use of ultrasound, computed tomography scan and image-guided core biopsies, the lesion was initially mistaken for an inflammatory intra-abdominal mass. The correct diagnosis was made at laparotomy. Solitary vascular anomaly of the mesentery is rare and its presentation as an acute abdomen has not been reported before.

Abdominally based free flap breast reconstruction offers excellent long-term outcomes, but donor-site morbidity remains a concern. Lower back pain is a prevalent musculoskeletal condition that may impair core stability and abdominal donor-site recovery after surgery. This study evaluated the association between a preexisting diagnosis of lower back pain and long-term physical well-being of the abdomen after surgery. We conducted a retrospective study of patients who underwent abdominally based free flap breast reconstruction between 2017 and 2024. Patients were categorized by the presence or ab

RATIONALE: Hepatic metastases from abdominal leiomyosarcoma are an extremely rare clinical condition. The multimodal imaging features of this condition have not been systematically described in the current literature, which may lead to delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis and adversely affect patient prognosis. We herein report a case of hepatic metastases from abdominal leiomyosarcoma that occurred 5 years after surgical resection, and describe in detail its imaging features on ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Through literature review, we aim to en

Differential diagnosis of a new abdominal mass is broad and includes infection, malignancy and other inflammatory processes. Definitive diagnosis may be challenging without invasive biopsy, as history, physical exam and imaging may be non-specific. A 69-year-old man with a history of abdominal tuberculosis presented with a new painful abdominal cyst consistent with reactivation of tuberculosis versus new malignancy. Investigations revealed 4+ acid-fast bacilli from the aspirate suggestive of tuberculosis, but no improvement was noted on antituberculous therapy. Core needle biopsy noted c-KIT-p

An 81-year-old man who had under gone two abdominal surgeries and temporary colostomy 30 years previously was admitted due to lower abdominal pain and vomiting. An abdominal X-ray film and abdominal CT scan showed intestinal distension and multiple calcareous deposits in the colon. Gastrografin enema examination revealed smooth stenosis at the sigmoid colon and many additional defects. Endoscopy could not be performed due to the stenosis. He did not agree to surgery. Seven months later, he was admitted again, due to colonic obstruction. Surgery was performed which revealed colonic obstruction

BACKGROUND: Core musculature is important for efficiency during activities including running. Both abdominal muscle strength and endurance contribute to this efficiency. The purpose of this study is to determine what differences and relationships exist in abdominal muscle thickness, strength, and endurance among persons who are runners, active, and inactive.
HYPOTHESIS: Persons in the running group would show significantly greater abdominal muscle thickness, muscle strength, and muscle endurance compared with those in the nonrunning groups.
STUDY DESIGN: Quantitative cohort design.

Cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is a very rare autoimmune disorder characterized by hemolytic anemia triggered by cold exposure or hypothermia. Thrombotic complications may ensue, with potentially fatal outcomes. The lowering of body temperature under general anesthesia poses risks of triggering agglutination and hemolysis. A 42-year-old female patient with CAD was scheduled to undergo a full abdominal hysterectomy for uterine fibroids. Strict temperature management was implemented in anticipation of hypothermia because extensive abdominal exposure to room air would be required during open surge

BACKGROUND: Research on symptom clustering in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using network analysis is limited. Core symptom clusters in Chinese patients with IBD have not been clearly defined, and comparative evidence between Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) remains scarce, limiting the development of targeted symptom management strategies.
METHODS: Data were collected from three hospitals using the Chinese version of the symptom scale for IBD to assess symptom frequency, severity, and distress. Exploratory factor analysis was performed to identify symptom clu

BACKGROUND: Human obesity is associated with increased heat production; however, subcutaneous adipose tissue provides an insulating layer that impedes heat loss. To maintain normothermia, therefore, obese individuals must increase their heat dissipation.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to test the hypothesis that temperature in a heat-dissipating region of the hand is elevated in obese adults.
DESIGN: Obese [body mass index (in kg/m(2)) > or = 30] and normal-weight (NW; body mass index = 18-25) adults were studied under thermoneutral conditions at rest. Core body temperature was measured by usi

To study the ultrastructural characteristics of the sympathetic nerve terminals of human omental veins, and of their relationship to the innervated smooth muscle cells, biopsy specimens were taken during abdominal surgery, rapidly fixed in glutaraldehyde/osmium and stained with uranylacetate. The results indicate that the veins have an extensive noradrenergic innervation, penetrating into the tunica media. The distance between nerve terminals partly or wholly free from enveloping Schwann cells, to the surface of smooth muscle cells ranged from 30 to 500 nm. Large dense core vesicles were promi

CONTEXT: Open abdominal procedures under combined general and epidural anaesthesia are at high risk of thermal loss due to prolonged operating times and significant exposure of internal organs.
SETTING AND DESIGN: In this prospective observational study, the effects of short-duration prewarming were assessed in participants who underwent open abdominal procedures with combined epidural and general anaesthesia.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A total of 72 patients were observed, with 36 receiving 15 min of prewarming before surgery and 36 receiving warming only during surgery. Core temperature (tympa

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) share similar abdominal symptoms; however, their differentiation remains controversial.
AIMS: To illustrate the differences between the two conditions.
METHODS: Patients and healthy controls completed questionnaires and provided stool samples for analysis.
RESULTS: IBS presented with the most severe symptoms and was specifically characterized by intense abdominal pain and frequent episodes of diarrhea. Patients with IBS displayed more dysregulated taxonomy within the fecal microbiota than SIBO. Oppor
