Comparative Phytochemical Profiling of Essential Oils from Selected Abies Species and Analysis of Their Antifungal and Antiradical Activity.

Background/Objectives: The essential oils of Abies species possess a complex chemical composition and pronounced biological activity. However, comparative studies of interspecies differences and on the influence of extraction methods on their chemical profile and pharmacological properties are limited. Such data are necessary for identifying the most promising species and optimizing essential oil production technologies for pharmaceutical applications. The aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate the essential oils of seven Abies species obtained by steam distillation and to analyze the

Docking in the Abies grandis abietaenol synthase to investigate the mechanism underlying conifer resin acid diterpene synthase evolution.

The pine family (Pinaceae) produces oleoresins in which the diterpenoid resin acids contain tricyclic backbones of either the (iso)pimarane and/or rearranged abietane type. These are produced by closely related (class I) diterpene synthases, whose functional divergence is of significant interest, not least for mechanistic insights into the catalyzed complex carbocation-cascade reactions. The abietaenol synthase from Abies grandis (AgAS) has long served as a model for this enzymatic subfamily and was used here to examine key residues potentially involved in transitions from such ancestral activ

Characterization and antimicrobial assessment of phytogenic synthesized selenium nanoparticles using leaf extract of Abies spectabilis (D. Don) Spach.

An environmentally friendly approach to treating microbial diseases has become necessary due to growing concerns about the adverse consequences of traditional antibiotics. The eco-friendly synthesis of selenium nanoparticles using the leaf extract of Abies spectabilis, a significant medicinal plant classified as near threatened, is reported for the first time in this study. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) were selected due to their unique combination of high biological activity, enhanced surface area, bioavailability, low toxicity and low cost as compared to other metallic nanoparticles. Terpenoids from Abies holophylla Attenuate LPS-Induced Neuroinflammation in Microglial Cells by Suppressing the JNK-Related Signaling Pathway.

We have previously reported that phytochemicals from Abies holophylla exhibit anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects by decreasing nitrite production and increasing nerve growth factor production. However, the exact mechanism underscoring these effects has not been revealed. In the present study, we aimed to explore the underlying anti-inflammatory mechanisms of A. holophylla and its phytochemicals. We studied various solvent fractions of A. holophylla and found the chloroform and hexane sub-fractions showed the most significant anti-neuroinflammatory effects in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)

Abies koreana essential oil inhibits drug-resistant skin pathogen growth and LPS-induced inflammatory effects of murine macrophage.

Since acne vulgaris is the combined result of a bacterial infection and the inflammatory response to that infection, we examined whether Abies koreana essential oil (AKE) possessed anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities against skin pathogens. In this study, AKE showed excellent antibacterial activities against drug-susceptible and -resistant Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, which are acne-causing bacteria. In addition, AKE reduced the LPS-induced secretion of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), IL-6, NO and PGE(2) in RAW 264.7

Performance of two Picea abies (L.) Karst. stands at different stages of decline : II. Photosynthesis and leaf conductance.

CO2 assimilation rate (A) and leaf conductance (g) were measured in the field on intact branches of 35-year-old Picea abies (L.) Karst. trees, in five plots each in a healthy and a declining stand. The declining site included trees with yellow needles. In order to separate atmospheric effects on gas exchange from effects of nutrient deficiency, direct effects of atmospheric pollutants were studied on green needles of different age classes in plots of trees at different stages of visible decline. The effects of nutrient deficiency on gas exchange were studied on a different group of trees showi

Performance of two Picea abies (L.) Karst. stands at different stages of decline : VII. Nutrient relations and growth.

A declining, closed-canopy Picea abies (L.) Karst. stand produced as much crown biomass as a healthy stand, although some trees were chlorotic due to magnesium deficiency. The production of wood per unit of leaf area in both stands was related to the foliar magnesium concentration. Although leaf area index and climate were similar at both sites, stemwood production was 35% lower in the declining than in the healthy stand. Nutritional disharmony, rather than a deficiency in a single element, was identified as the mechanism for reduced tree vigor. The role of nutrient stress in forest decline wa

[AUDITORY BRAINSTEM IMPLANTS (ABI) IN CHILDREN: CASE SERIES IN SHAARE ZEDEK MEDICAL CENTER].

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CI) are the treatment of choice for individuals with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. A small group of patients, with pathology central to the cochlea, cannot benefit from CI. Examples in children include absence of the cochlear-nerve or cochlear aplasia. In these cases, implantation of an auditory brainstem implant (ABI), directly stimulating the cochlear nucleus, bypassing the inner-ear and auditory-nerve, may be beneficial. OBJECTIVES: Describe a series of children with ABI's treated in Shaare-Zedek, including the first ABI implantation in Israe

Early ABI Testing May Decrease Risk of Amputation for Patients With Lower Extremity Ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Patients with lower extremity wounds from diabetes mellitus or peripheral artery disease (PAD) have a risk of amputation as high as 25%. In patients with arterial disease, revascularization decreases the risk of amputation. We aimed to determine if the early assessment of arterial perfusion correlates with the risk of amputation. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients referred to the vascular clinic over 18 months with Rutherford Grade 5 and 6 chronic limb-threatening ischemia to determine if patients had a pulse exam done at the time the wound was identified and when ankle

Preclinical Profile and Characterization of the Hepatitis B Virus Core Protein Inhibitor ABI-H0731.

ABI-H0731, a first-generation hepatitis B virus (HBV) core protein inhibitor, has demonstrated effective antiviral activity in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients in a phase 1b clinical trial and is currently being further evaluated in phase 2 clinical trials. Here, we report the preclinical profile of ABI-H0731. In in vitro cell culture systems (HepG2-derived cell lines HepAD38 and HepG2-NTCP and primary human hepatocytes [PHHs]), ABI-H0731 exhibited selective inhibition of HBV DNA replication (50% effective concentration [EC50] from 173 nM to 307 nM). Most importantly, ABI-H0731 suppressed co

Dysbindin-1, WAVE2 and Abi-1 form a complex that regulates dendritic spine formation.

Genetic variations in dysbindin-1 (dystrobrevin-binding protein-1) are one of the most commonly reported variations associated with schizophrenia. As schizophrenia could be regarded as a neurodevelopmental disorder resulting from abnormalities of synaptic connectivity, we attempted to clarify the function of dysbindin-1 in neuronal development. We examined the developmental change of dysbindin-1 in rat brain by western blotting and found that a 50 kDa isoform is highly expressed during the embryonic stage, whereas a 40 kDa one is detected at postnatal day 11 and increased thereafter. Comparative genome mapping among Picea glauca, P. mariana x P. rubens and P. abies, and correspondence with other Pinaceae.

A composite linkage map was constructed from four individual maps for the conifer Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, from anonymous and gene-specific markfers (714 AFLPs, 38 SSRs, and 53 ESTPs). A total of 12 linkage groups were delineated with an average marker density of 2.7 cM. Macro-synteny and macro-colinearity comparisons with two other composite linkage maps developed for the species complex P. mariana (Mill.) B.S.P. x P. rubens Sarg., and for P. abies (L.) Karst. revealed an identical number of linkage groups and a remarkable conservation of the gene content and gene order of linkage groups o

Effects of manganese deficiency on soluble apoplastic peroxidase activities and lignin content in needles of Norway spruce (Picea abies).

Apoplastic peroxidase activities were investigated in manganese-deficient and manganese-sufficient needles of field-grown Norway spruce trees (Picea abies L.). In Mn-sufficient needles, two sets of peroxidases, one with an alkaline pI >/= 9 and another with an acidic pI </= 3, were identified using guaiacol or coniferylalcohol as substrates for activity staining after isoelectric focusing in a pH gradient from 3 to 9. The acidic peroxidases were capable of Mn-dependent NADH oxidation and H(2)O(2) formation. Syringaldazine peroxidase activity was not found in apoplastic extracts, but was presen

Mineral nutrient deficiency increases the sensitivity of photosynthesis to sulphur dioxide in needles of a coniferous tree, Abies nordmanniana.

Abies nordmanniana (Stev.) Spach was cultivated in rooting media either rich in nutrients (control) or low in magnesium (low Mg) or low in magnesium and nitrogen (low Mg-N), respectively. Intact, attached needles were exposed, in the light (460 μmol photons m-2 s-1), to an atmosphere containing 1 ppm SO2 for 5 h. Measurements of light- and CO2-saturated rates of photosynthetic O2 evolution, A max, were performed before and after SO2 treatments. In needles from well fertilized plants, A max was high (about 50 μmol m-2 s-1) and was not affected by SO2. Needles from low-Mg and low-Mg-N plants had

The double-edged sword effect of galactoglucomannan-rich Norway spruce (Picea abies) byproduct extract in mice with induced colitis.

Galactoglucomannan (GGM) is a hemicellulosic polysaccharide with emerging prebiotic and immunomodulatory properties. Here, we evaluated the protective potential and biological effects of a Norway spruce byproduct extract (NSBE), a forestry-derived fraction rich in GGM and phenolic compounds, in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced acute colitis and under homeostatic conditions, focusing on inflammation, oxidative stress, intestinal barrier integrity, and gut microbiota, while also using complementary in vitro models to explore the underlying mechanisms. In vitro, NSBE exhibited selective cytot
