An increasing trend of cutaneous zygomycosis caused by Mycocladus corymbifer (formerly Absidia corymbifera): report of two cases and review of primary cutaneous Mycocladus infections.

Cutaneous zygomycosis is a rare but serious infection in trauma patients. We report two cases of cutaneous zygomycosis caused by Mycocladus corymbifer (formerly Absidia corymbifera) which were probably the result of soil contamination of wounds of the patient's lower extremities. Both patients received appropriate antifungal therapy in combination with aggressive surgical debridement. While a cure was achieved with amphotericin B in one, the other patient was intolerant to this antifungal and cure was achieved with a new drug, posaconazole. Twenty seven cases (including the two cases in this s

[A case of receipieut of kidney transplantation presenting life-threatning preumothorax due to the rupture of intrapulmonary multiple infections cavities caused by Absidia corymbifera and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus].

We report a rare case of life-threatning pneumothorax induced by multiple intrapulmonary cavitary lesion due to Absidia corymbifera and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The patient was a 58-year-old man who had undergone kidney transplantation three year ago due to diabetes renal failure. He had been treated with immunosuppressive drugs and prednisolone, but he had neutropenia and an abnormal shadow on the chest X-ray. His chest X-ray findings became worse inspite of broad-spectrum antibiotis, vancomycin, antivirus drug, gamma-globulin and antifungal drug therapy. He came to

Unveiling species diversity within early-diverging fungi from China XV: Three new species of Cunninghamellaceae (Mucorales).

Fungi in the family Cunninghamellaceae are widely distributed, with soil being their primary habitat. During the isolation and identification of fungi from soil samples collected in Guangdong and Yunnan Provinces, China, three new species of the genera Absidia and Cunninghamella were discovered, namely Absidia grisea sp. nov., A. dendroidea sp. nov., and Cunninghamella dimorpha sp. nov. Molecular phylogenetic analyses were performed using five loci: the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), large subunit (LSU), small subunit of ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA), actin gene (ACT), and translation elon

Post-traumatic infection of the lower limb caused by rare Enterobacteriaceae and Mucorales in a young healthy male.

Enterobacter amnigenus and Leclercia adecarboxylata are gram-negative aerobic bacilli of the family Enterobacteriaceae that have been isolated from water and, rarely, from various clinical specimens. Absidia is a filamentous fungus of the class Zygomycetes that is ubiquitous in nature and can cause infection, primarily in immunocompromised hosts. Here, we describe an infection of the left lower limb caused by E. amnigenus and L. adecarboxylata with subsequent isolation of Absidia spp. in a patient with multiple traumatic injuries after a major motor vehicle accident. The severity of the clinic

Antigenic characterization of some potentially pathogenic mucoraceous fungi.

The antigenic profiles of 10 mucoraceous fungi--Absidia corymbifera, Mortierella wolfii, Mucor miehei, M. pusillus, M. racemosus, Rhizopus arrhizus, R. microsporus, R. oryzae, R. rhizopodiformis, R. stolonifer,--Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigatus were compared by crossed immunoelectrophoresis (XIE). Antigen-rich material was obtained from homogenized hyphae (or yeasts in the case of C. albicans), and antisera by multiple subcutaneous innoculation of rabbits with macerated but viable hyphal fragments of Ab. corymbifera, M. pusillus, R. oryzae or Asp. fumigatus. Unique and common antigen

Extracellular proteolysis by Mucoraceae in serum-albumin agar tested by the agar block method.

In a preliminary study, three strains of Absidia corymbifera (two strains from autopsy material of the lungs and one from the soil of a potted indoor plant in a hospital) and one strain of Rhizopus oryzae (from the soil of a potted plant in a hospital) were tested for secretory proteolytic activity in serum-albumin agar (SAA) with initial pH values of 5.0 and 7.0 by the agar block method and subsequent protein staining. Within an incubation period of 5 d/37 degrees C, complete proteolysis took place in all the SAA blocks with an initial pH value of 7.0. The three strains of Absidia corymbifera

Stereoselective 15α-hydroxylation of androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione by Gibberella sp. for efficient production of 15α-OH-ADD and 15α-OH-AD.

Androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione (ADD) and its hydroxylated derivatives are important steroidal drug intermediates, playing a crucial role in the pharmaceutical industry. This study evaluated the whole-cell biotransformation of ADD by Gibberella sp. CICC 2498 and Absidia sp. CICC 41050. While Absidia sp. showed low efficiency, Gibberella sp. selectively produced two major metabolites, identified as 15α-OH-ADD and 15α-OH-AD via HPLC, MS, and NMR. Through orthogonal design and single-factor experiments, the transformation rate of ADD to 15α-OH-ADD was enhanced from 30.35% to 61.74% under optimal co

Lichtheimia hongkongensis sp. nov., a novel Lichtheimia spp. associated with rhinocerebral, gastrointestinal, and cutaneous mucormycosis.

Three thermotolerant "Absidia-like" isolates with unique morphologic characteristics, recovered from nasopharyngeal swab of a liver transplant recipient, gastric biopsy of a renal transplant recipient, and skin biopsy of a man with burn, respectively, were characterized. Microscopic examination showed nonseptate hyphae with highly branched sporangiophores. Uniquely, most side branches were circinate, and abundant pleomorphic giant cells with fingerlike projections were observed, characteristics absent from other Absidia/Lichtheimia spp. ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rRNA gene cluster, partial EF1alpha gene,

Gastrointestinal Zygomycosis Masquerading as Acute Appendicitis.

Zygomycosis is a rare invasive opportunistic fungal infection that occurs in the setting of hematologic malignancies, chemotherapy-induced neutropenia, and immunosuppressive therapies. We report the first case of disseminated appendiceal zygomycosis due to Absidia spp. in a neutropenic patient who initially presented as acute appendicitis. A 63-year-old woman with acute myeloid leukemia presented as acute appendicitis while receiving induction chemotherapy and ultimately succumbed to overwhelming disseminated zygomycosis. Initial symptoms included loose stools and right lower abdominal pain un

[Mucormycosis due to Mycocladus corymbiferus in a fattening pig].

A fattening pig with enlarged head and abdominal lymph nodes was examined. An aspirate of the abscesses did not produce a conclusive diagnosis. Only an excision with subsequent histological and bacteriological examination showed the mould Mycocladus corymbiferus (syn. Absidia corymbifera) to be present. Similar abscesses should be examined as actinomycosis and leucosis are the main differential diagnoses.

Role of molds in farmer's lung disease in Eastern France.

Farmer's lung disease (FLD) is common in the east of France. In the absence of the primary recognized FLD agent, Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula, its etiology remains unknown. A prospective case-control study was performed to find the etiology of FLD in this area. Eleven patients were matched with 11 healthy control farmers. Twenty-two urban subjects constituted the nonexposed control group. Microorganisms from cowshed air and fodder were identified and counted. The antigens of the microorganisms most frequently isolated at the 22 farms were used for serological tests. Farms of patients with FL
