Coding and reimbursement issues for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

Bone densitometry has a unique and invaluable place in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of osteoporosis. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is currently considered the bone densitometric technique of choice. With this method, the patient at risk for osteoporosis can be identified so that appropriate clinical interventions to prevent fracture can be undertaken. DEXA also allows assessment of the efficacy of these interventions in preventing bone loss. As with any other technology, however, bone densitometry must be properly used in the clinical setting to achieve this benefit. Cri

Measuring antidepressant prescribing practice in a health care system using administrative data: implications for quality measurement and improvement.

BACKGROUND: Up to one in eight Americans experiences an episode of depression that requires treatment in his or her lifetime. The direct and indirect costs associated with major depression are high but may be reduced with appropriate treatment. To decrease the probability of relapse, guidelines specify that treatment with antidepressant medications should continue for at least 4 months after symptom remission and that adequate doses of antidepressants be used. A study was conducted in 1997-1999 to examine how different specifications in the construction of quality of care measures for depressi

Online searching of the pharmaceutical literature.

Online databases that cover pharmaceutical topics are described and then illustrated with four sample searches. The online databases useful for searching pharmaceutical topics can be grouped into three categories: (1) databases devoted exclusively to drugs and the pharmacy profession, such as International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, Pharmaceutical News Index, and Ringdoc; (2) databases covering the clinical medicine literature, such as MEDLINE and its related files and Excerpta Medica; and (3) other scientific databases that include coverage of the pharmaceutical literature, such as BIOSIS Prev

Reporting and concordance of methodologic criteria between abstracts and articles in diagnostic test studies.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the quality and concordance of methodologic criteria in abstracts versus articles regarding the diagnosis of trichomoniasis. STUDY DESIGN: Survey of published literature. DATA SOURCES: Studies indexed in MEDLINE (1976-1998). STUDY SELECTION: Studies that used culture as the gold or reference standard. DATA EXTRACTION: Data from abstract and articles were independently abstracted using 4 methodologic criteria: (1) prospective evaluation of consecutive patients; (2) test results did not influence the decision to do gold standard; (3) independent and blind comparison wi

Vital Status Ascertainment for a Historic Diverse Cohort of U.S. Women.

BACKGROUND: Studies linking large pregnancy cohorts with mortality data can address critical questions about long-term implications of gravid health, yet relevant US data are scant. We examined the feasibility of linking the Collaborative Perinatal Project, a large multiracial U.S. cohort study of pregnant women (n = 48,197; 1959-1966), to death records. METHODS: We abstracted essential National Death Index (NDI) (1979-2016) (n = 46,428). We performed a linkage to the Social Security Administration Death Master File through 2016 (n = 46,450). Genealogists manually searched vital status in 201

More abstracts, more science? Conference visibility and evidence maturity in reproductive medicine.

Conference abstracts disseminate rapidly, remain indexed and citable, and can reach clinicians and patients long before a peer-reviewed report appears, or in its place. This commentary examines that gap between visibility and evidence maturity in reproductive medicine. Submissions to the major fertility congresses continue to rise, plausibly sustained by tools that lower the cost of producing an abstract and by incentives that reward its acceptance. A substantial proportion of presented trials never reach full publication, and findings can change as data mature, yet abstracts continue to accru

Impact of Antioxidant Mangosteen on Clinical and Biochemical Parameters of Periodontitis-A Systematic Review.

ABSTRACT: Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease that leads to the progressive destruction of periodontal tissues. Traditional treatments focus on mechanical debridement; however, antioxidants are increasingly being considered as adjuvant therapies to improve clinical outcomes. Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.), a tropical fruit and chemically characterized natural source of xanthones, exhibits potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, making it a promising candidate in phytotherapeutic periodontal interventions. ABSTRACT: This systematic review ai

Search Datasets in Literature: A Case Study of GWAS.

One of the missions of the NIH BD2K (Big Data to Knowledge) initiative is to make data discoverable and promote the re-use of existing datasets. Our ultimate goal is to develop a scalable approach that can automatically scan millions of scientific publications and identify underlying data sets. Using Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) as a use case, we conducted an initial study to identify GWAS dataset attributes in MEDLINE abstracts, by developing a hybrid approach that combines domain dictionaries and pattern-based rules. The automatic GWAS dataset attribute recognition system achieved

An index of symptoms for infection with human immunodeficiency virus: reliability and validity.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of a brief index to measure symptoms in individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). From an ambulatory clinic that specializes in the care of HIV-infected individuals at a university hospital in northeast Ohio, 148 randomly selected outpatients (predominantly homosexual men) with a broad spectrum of HIV disease were enrolled in a prospective, cohort study. In standard interviews, patients rated the frequency of 36 symptoms related to HIV infection on an ordinal scale from zero (never) to three (daily); t

Assessment of spin in the abstracts of randomized controlled trials in dental caries with statistically nonsignificant results for primary outcomes: A methodological study.

The study aimed to assess the prevalence of spin in the titles and abstracts of RCTs in dental caries with statistically nonsignificant primary outcomes and to assess the risk indicators which may be associated with spin. Any original publication reporting a two-arm RCT in dental caries with clearly identified statistically nonsignificant primary outcomes published from January 1, 2015 until October 28, 2022 were included. PubMed was searched electronically to identify the eligible publications. The prevalence of spin in titles and abstracts were assessed and categorized into spin patterns bas

Mining MEDLINE for problems associated with vitamin D.

This paper presents a two-step approach to generating comprehensive abstractive overviews for biomedical topics. It starts with a sensitivity-maximizing search of MEDLINE/PubMed and MeSH-based filtering of the results that are then processed using NLP methods to extract relations between entities of interest. We evaluate this approach in a case study based on the IOM report on the role of vitamin D in human health. The report defines disorders that serve as health indicators for the role of vitamin D. We evaluate the abstractive overviews generated using MeSH indexing and the extracted relatio

Posterior Urethral Valves Outcomes Prediction (PUVOP): a machine learning tool to predict clinically relevant outcomes in boys with posterior urethral valves.

BACKGROUND: Early kidney and anatomic features may be predictive of future progression and need for additional procedures in patients with posterior urethral valve (PUV). The objective of this study was to use machine learning (ML) to predict clinically relevant outcomes in these patients. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with PUV with kidney function measurements at our institution between 2000 and 2020 were included. Pertinent clinical measures were abstracted, including estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at each visit, initial vesicoureteral reflux grade, and renal dysplasia at present

Variability in data: the Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Adult Cardiac Surgery Database.

OBJECTIVE: Since 1989, data have been reported to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Adult Cardiac Surgery Database for quality improvement. This information is also data mined for national quality indicators, policy initiatives, and research. Such use has important limitations, because data elements cannot be verified for accuracy. We determined variability of disease etiology and operative data database elements when abstracted by untrained physician abstractors. METHODS: We selected 30 patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery from January to December 2005 (10 each of coronary a

"Now you're talking my language" - Improving health literacy and patient-directed knowledge of scientific abstracts through provision of plain language summaries created by artificial intelligence: A cross sectional infodemiology study.

BACKGROUND: Due to free and digital availability of scientific abstracts in medical journals, as well as search engines including PubMed, many patients are increasingly looking to these as reliable and trusted sources of information, amidst an information ecosystem of potential mis- and disinformation. However, such scientific abstracts are difficult-to-read by the lay community, as they are not written purposefully for a lay audience. The Plain Language Summary now offers such readers a new medium to engage with, thereby helping with their health literacy and understanding of the research fin

Risk factors associated with the classification of unspecified and/or unexplained causes of death in an occupational cohort.

In a matched case-control study of an occupational cohort in East Tennessee, data from the death certificates of 608 cases and controls were abstracted and analyzed in order to investigate possible risk factors associated with the certification on the death certificate of an ill-defined cause of death. There was a very strong association between the ill-defined classification and the certifier, especially if the certifier was a medical examiner (OR = 10.4, 95% CI: 6.0, 18.0).
