Academic performance, study time, psychological factors, and substance use among Korean adolescents.

Substance use and mental health problems often emerge during adolescence. However, relatively few large-scale studies have examined how academic and psychological factors jointly relate to substance use among adolescents in high-pressure educational contexts. This study investigated the associations between perceived academic performance, daily study time, psychological factors (stress, anxiety, and happiness), and alcohol and tobacco use among Korean adolescents. We analyzed the cross-sectional data of 50,914 middle and high school students who participated in the 2023 Korea Youth Risk Behavi

Effects of Entry Grades on Students' Academic Performance Under Homogeneous Educational Resources.

BACKGROUND: A minor difference in college entrance examination scores can result in vastly different educational resources in China, so it has been debated whether it is the difference in the student population or the difference in educational resources that causes the difference in medical graduates. We aimed to evaluate the effects of entry grades on students' academic performance under homogeneous educational resources. METHODS: Students in grade 2016 with 13-point difference in the average admission scores of 2 medicine schools in Sun Yat-sen University were educated in mixed classes and

Early identification of struggling learners: using prematriculation and early academic performance data.

INTRODUCTION: A perennial difficultly for remediation programmes in medical school is early identification of struggling learners so that resources and assistance can be applied as quickly as is practical. Our study investigated if early academic performance has predictive validity above and beyond pre-matriculation variables. METHODS: Using three cohorts of medical students, we used logistic regression modelling and negative binomial regression modelling to assess the strength of the relationships between measures of early academic performance and outcomes-later referral to the academic revi

Medical treatment of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and children's academic performance.

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is negatively associated with a range of academic achievement measures. We use Danish administrative register data to study the impact of medical treatment of ADHD on children's academic performance assessed by student grade point average (GPA). Using administrative register data on children, who begin medical treatment, we conduct a natural experiment and exploit plausible exogenous variation in medical nonresponse to estimate the effect of medical treatment on school-leaving GPA. We find significant effects of treatment on both exam and teacher

Traditional predictors of academic performance in a medical school's independent study program.

PURPOSE: To provide predictive information as an initial screening device for admission decisions, generalizable to the population of students opting for the Independent Study Program (ISP) at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. METHOD: A stepwise multiple-regression technique was used to generate predictor-criterion relationships. A priority code was developed as an applicant screening device. The code is a numeric value based on a combination of applicant grade-point average (GPA) and Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores that provides a prediction of first-year performanc

Attendance and Academic Performance in Neurophysiology: Engaging Dental Students Through Active Learning.

Engaging students in foundational neuroscience courses such as neurophysiology remains a challenge in dental education. Class attendance is often assumed to be associated with academic performance, yet evidence in basic science disciplines is inconsistent. This study analyzed the correlation between class attendance and academic performance among undergraduate dental students enrolled in a neurophysiology course. Institutional academic data from 185 students across four consecutive semesters (2023-2024) were retrospectively analyzed. The course included clinically oriented learning activities,

Association Between Coffee Consumption and Academic Performance Among Second-Year Medical Students.

Background and aim Caffeine is one of the most widely consumed psychoactive substances, with coffee serving as a primary source among university students globally. Many medical students use coffee to counter fatigue, stay alert, and maintain focus during extended study sessions and examinations. Caffeine works mainly by blocking adenosine receptors, which promotes wakefulness and temporarily improves attention and responsiveness. However, excessive consumption can lead to anxiety, disrupted sleep, and reduced cognitive function, potentially affecting academic performance. Despite the popularit

A sibling-controlled study of intelligence and academic performance following Reye syndrome.

The authors compared the intellectual, cognitive and academic abilities of 22 survivors of Reye syndrome attending normal schools with the sibling nearest in age as control. The British Ability Scales, visual and verbal IQ, short-term memory scales and attainment tests were administered to all children. Reye syndrome children as a group differed significantly from the controls only on the basic number skills test. However, children with severe encephalopathy and those whose illness occurred in infancy had significant deficits on many of the tests. 18 children recovered without requiring 'addit

Masculinity, femininity, academic performance, and health: further evidence concerning the androgyny controversy.

Spence and Helmreich's (1978) claim that individual differences in four components of achievement motivation (mastery, work, competitiveness, and personal unconcern) are attributable to masculinity and femininity rather than to gender was generally supported, with one exception: Masculinity was associated with competitiveness for males but not for females. Furthermore, competitive women were more likely than noncompetitive women to have mental and physical health problems, but there was no such difference for males. In general, masculinity emerged as a beneficial constellation of traits for bo

Influence of Preterm Birth and Environmental Context on Academic Performance and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth affects 10% of all births annually in the United States. Outcomes of people born preterm are challenging to predict because of multiple influences, including gestational age, birth weight, and social and environmental contexts, that contribute to an individual's growth and developmental trajectory. The influence of toxic stress is underrepresented in the literature assessing preterm birth outcomes. OBJECTIVES: The current analyses use the eco-bio-developmental model of poverty and preterm birth as a framework to model the pathways among toxic stress, preterm birth, a
